Cars you wouldn't mind owning. BUT NEVER WILL..

Holiest of thread resurrections Batman!

I do have unexpected levels of grandure when it comes to shite old cars I’d like on my driveway or in my garage. Or indeed engine shed.

The no way at all unless I win the Euromillions eleventy-fourth roll over.

Jensen Interceptor
Chevette HS(R)
Talbot Sunbeam Lotus/Ti
Avenger Tiger
AEC Mammoth Major 8, Ergomatic, AV790
Dennis RS/SS fire appliance
Routemaster, pref a Coach RMC/RCL/RMA
Leyland National in ‘Kentish Bus’ primrose livery.
Vauxhall Viva HB GT
Vauxhall Firenza droop snoot.

Small chance of owning if I save up money, but unlikely unless I have space. Automatics can bugger off as can any RedTopYo! or FordPintoYo! engine conversions.

Vauxhall Chevette
Opel Manta (any series)
Talbot Samba GLS, S or Rallye. Or Cabrio.
Pug 309GTi/XSi
Vauxhall Viva HB/HC with letterbox Speedo
Peugeot 306
Another Saab, but Aero spec 4-pot HPT
5-pot Volvo  C/V70 or 850. T5 would be nice
Another Scimitar, Se5/5a this time with manual O/D

Most of my choices are now firmly in classic territory and not considered old shite any more.

Reliant Scimitar

Simple Ford engine & box, mk2 Jag style Salisbury axle and triumph TR suspension.

Really easy to work on the greasy stuff. More likely to have electrical woes or a rusty bits where the roll-over bar in the b-pillar mounts to the chassis through the body.

I would like a Camargue but prices are now silly:

Same goes for a Lagonda but I think running costs would be more ruinous:

I went to the auction for the scruffy examples from the Stondon museum and even they were more than I was happy bidding so no chance at today’s prices.

Another lottery win car would be a Khamsin:

image.jpeg.64eacfedb880536ea88001d7ba48d236.jpeg
getting closer to reality I like the Vauxhall sportshatch but not more than the cars I currently have.

image.jpeg.f8c2fe99fdd2c55f04ceb15488dede01.jpeg
similarly a late VX490 with tartan seats

image.jpeg.0bbd738bc1f903e7ab29ac71655571cf.jpeg
Also a Jensen Interceptor and V12 Jag but I have not ruled these out 100% but highly unlikely I will have one.

I could probably go on all day as I rather like P5B’s as well

I’d better stop now these are the ones that are top of my thoughts.

Wow, a lot has happened in the 11 or so years since I started this thread! In the intervening years I've owned both a Citroen XM and an LDV Pilot, so maybe this "CARS I'LL NEVER OWN" shizz is a bit of a myth... All you have to do is go out and buy the car you want to own.

I also can't think of anything shite that I would not be able to own, if it's available of course; it's the classics such as the Alfa SZ and Lancia Aurelia GT that have drifted so far above my price level that there is no point in even dreaming :( On the other hand I can't ever see myself running a small fleet of elderly shite, something sporty, a luxobarge, a load -lugger, etc, etc, which I would quite like to do. As well as the cost, although with a bit of creative accounting that could be no problem  there is a slight matter of keeping several old cars actually in a fully working state, space (the main one for me), not to mention the likely reaction from The Management.

Well;well, reading that again after all these years ;)  Things have moved on and we now live somewhere with a drive big enough for four cars, but only have three between us, and Mrs C doesn't object to me keeping the Mazda just for tip duties as I can therefore 'get rid of'* all of the stuff clogging up the garage (allegedly) This leaves room for car number 4 :) which would be something built in the Black Country. Jensen Interceptor is too big for my tastes and A40 Sports too cramped and Swallow Doretti too expensive, which leaves this, the Frisky. Made in Wolverhampton by Meadows, famous builders of engines, but initially with a Villiers motorbike engine, with body designed by Michelotti but constructed by Guy Motors using the technology developed for their fibreglass lorry cabs. WCPGW. Well for a start only 75 of them still exist so unlikely to ever find one for sale  :(

Rolls Royce Camargue.

Goony in pictures but actually beautiful in the metal. I've sat in one but never driven one. Never will probably.

I also have sat in one but not driven it, I suspect driving one would be disappointing as Rolls Royces seem too much like a lorry to drive in my view. I would still like one just to look at though.

There's loads.. From the porridgey end of the classic market I always wanted to try a Hillman Super Minx, Austin A40, Wolseley 1500,mark 3 and 4 Zephyr or Zodiacs, Triumph 2500,a mid-sixties Yank station wagon,Vauxhall Viscount and just one more Wolseley 6/110 but unlike the last two occasions I'd go out of my way to get an automatic.

As for the more modern stuff,SD1 V8, 620ti,a Legend coupe, 406 V6, Alfa 164,another Omega V6 or a Senator, E30 318is, E34 525i, Cavalier GSI,Carlton,MX5, the list is lengthy. I've had the chance of any of the above for comfortably less than a grand over the last twenty years or so and usually poverty has prevailed. But I just thought to myself, never mind, there'll be another chance. I don't know whether it's just the unwelcome realisation that I'm getting older but it's a genuine shock to see what figures some of these are commanding now.

In retrospect I should probably be grateful that I lived through those times and bought as much as I could justify when old cars were cheap.

For me I never even consider owning some stuff because they're just too expensive. Lamborghini Diablo for example. Other stuff I've come to the conclusion it just won't add enough value to the fleet. For example, I absolutely love the look of an E31 850i. But realistically, it's probably not all that great to drive and will use fuel like no tomorrow so I'll never buy one. Other things like a Lagonda just scare me too much in terms of running costs so again, will never buy one. Or E92 M3, just don't want to deal with rod bearings etc

Rolls Royce Camargue?

That's just a poor man's Fiat 130 coupe isn't it?

I think they're both Pininfarina and they obviously sold the same design twice. Not for the first time either - Peugeot 404, Austin Cambridge - but I think the Fiat looks better. Though I'd happily have either.

Not a fan of the boat anchor engine! Would love one with a different engine but too old/lazy/dont have the space to do anything with it.
