Peugeot RD (Rear-wheel Drive 405 by Iran-Khodro)

Ok Guys! I am opening a new Thread for this, since it has generated a lot of interest!

I had to filthy my Blog and make a post about this, since there have been so many questions about this truly Shite creature! :o

You are looking at a Rear-wheel Drive (RD) Peugeot 405! And as you can see, the power train is coming from no other than Paykan! The engine is the Rootes 1.6 Hillman Avenger (which were used on Paykans since late 70s) and was mated to the Hunter gearbox and rear axle.

They started selling them in late 90s with the original carburetor set up, and then with the fuel injection upgrade (which were used on late model Paykans also). OMG! I just looked up http://www.ikco.com/ and guess what?! The RD is still available!!! Now they are calling it Peugeot Roa (have no idea what that means). Now you might ask, was it mainly a Peugeot body, or was it the Paykan underbody underneath? Well, on my last trip to Iran few years ago, I spotted one on jacks and took the some snaps, take a look above maybe you can figure out what is going on with this mess! The car was a handling disaster, and would suffer constant engine-mount and cross member failure (as it is evident in the photos). Hope this clears some of the confusion regarding this monstrosity of a car!

I know it would be awful, but just look at how awesome and right that as new-405 looks. You would want one too right?

In common with that of the 205 (and to an extent, the 106), the 405's styling has really aged well :)

add the 306 into that mix too - the late 80s early 90s Pug range was superb! Drove well too.

I see a lot of 405 estates still but almost no saloons - shame!

impressed by the slicks too!

Agreed. The 406 is still a good-looking car, too. So is the 605, but I haven't seen one of those for many years...

That photo is empirical proof that Peugeot have totally lost the plot styling-wise. I wonder if Chris Bangle is working for them?

Not sure even old myopic features could manage to mangle a visage that atrociously.

Maybe Peugeot have the actual Bangles running their styling dept?

I need to point something out here: there are a lot more safety features that needs to be baked into a modern car these days, including Pedestrian Protection criteria, which as of 2013 will become even more stringent.

So in many cases, if a manufacturer uses an older platform, then they have to design around those hard structures! It is really a pain in the neck! That is why you don't see thin pillar anymore for examples! They are bigger to protect you in roll-overs, but then you can't see pedestrians as a result, and then you have to have a big nose and massive front over hang to protect them! It is a right Fiasco this modern day motoring!!!....

Here's more Roa smut.

The first three were taken in Islamabad-e-gharb, where I'd broken down. The first one's slightly out of focus on account of my not being hungover enough to operate a camera. Just looking at it makes me fancy a bacon sandwich and some pornography.

I find the paint finish in pic 5 particularly stimulating.

The only obvious visual difference I can spot between the Roa/RD and the less exotic FWD 405/Pars is the rear wheels. They never seem to fit properly on the Roa. Maybe the track of the Peykan axle is an inch-or-two too narrow?

LOL!... You forgot "Aragh Saaghi" (the locally made alcoholic beverages)!...

Tell us more about your visit to Iran! Do you have any Paykan photos I can use on my Blog (http://www.PaykanHunter.com)? :D

Oooo you just answered a question for me, I knew thesewere 405, but wondered how much changed. The bulkhead and struts being as good as identical. Sorry the other pictures are shite and unreleated :)

You are correct! But IranKhodro claimed this car was 100% designed and developed in Iran! Nobody bought their joke though!...

You thought it couldn't get any worse than Peugeot RD?... Check this out now! Renault 5 with KIA Pride Engine, done by SAIPA, I think they wanted to show IranKhodro how it gets done! My dad had one and it felt apart from Day 1!.... You know what, come to think of it, when it comes to Shite nothing can top Iran!
