Great save. Hats off to you sir.

I remember getting in these when i used to go to the motor shows at Earls Court and the NEC as a kid.

That's just dredged up the memory of going to the motor show with my dad when the Caro was launched and sitting in the driver's seat of one, when I was about 12 or 13. I was revelling in the sheer greyness of the outdated plastics when a slimy middle aged bloke wearing a body warmer (the type with lots of pockets - who needs so many pockets?) got into the passenger seat and started talking to me, asking if I liked the car etc. But in a leary voice. My dad was outside the car totally oblivious to everything, just smiling away whilst I was getting groomed by a nonce!

Not that I think you're 'The Crazy World of Arthur Brown' or anything Richie. Top save!

These are horrible, but in a good way. Maybe we're all sickos on here!

Lots of these ended up on boats out of Tilbury to "go home" along with Lada Riva's and the like a good few years ago. They were popular with banger racers too, nicknamed "Polish Westies", but my local track "Arena Essex" banned them from the light banger class because they couldn't be stopped, and if you had one, and it ran ok, you were pretyy much guaranteed a win if things got violent, or if you were using them in a DD. As a consequence they were put into the national banger class, against Cortinas and Cavaliers etc, and didn't stand a chance due to lack of speed.

Well done on the save mate, U IZ WINNAR.

What a Autoshite legend you are!

Last time I saw one of these was a Caro being sold at a farm machinery auction for about £60. This was when it would have been about 6 years old - I think the interest was due to the low mileage Peugeot dizzler engine rather than the rest of the vehicle.

Good luck finding the bits for it. Do you know any Poles? they might tell you where you can get the bits in the homeland!

There was a club called the Unloved Socialist Soviet Car Register, or something like that - they might be able to help if they still exist. A bloke named Julian Nowill ran it.

Tell us how much you have forked out to buy this horror and have it trucked from the other end of the country!!! I'm guessing at £450 or so at least, which is a lot of money to have a knackered old Polonez on the driveway.... However I salute you all the more because of it!

I must say i reckon I could get very friendly with one of these old shitboxes, maybe I need to have a crack with my Polish next-door neighbour, see if he can broker a sale on one in Poland! The earlier the better.

I am so in awe I hereby donate this complete DOHC Lancia head I have in front of me. Complete with Weber 34 DMTR. It's from a 1585cc Beta.

I don't know how well it will bolt to the old 1481cc Fiat 1500 block (I thought the Lampredi donc was developed from this you see, and the 1589cc block was in the MR'89 range too), but it's yours. I'm over your way next w/e as it happens.

But if not you gets a free carb and a lump of metal fancy enough to become a coffee table.

A Polonez ownz two Stanzas.

General consensus seems to be 'Love it' - Like there was ever any question!

I'd love an early pre-facelift one with the blocky rear lights, and all this talk of engine swapping is giving me unhealthy thoughts about Fiat twin-cams.

Incredible save Richie - time to update your sig, you must have more than 18 cars by now!

(and when do we get an update on the Alpines eh?)

I went to that motor show too, I'd have been about 14, and I got brochures off the FSO stand. The one Caro on display must have been top spec because it had walnut on the doors - bolted on with real heavy duty visible screws! :D

Bloody hell -i though i ,Thorsten & Testes were nutters- but this cracks it. Hats off to you Sir,

I bought a Lancia Fulvia Berlina once that had been lifted that way -never was quite ''square'' afterwards- but I guess that doesnt matter here.

i await the updates with considerable interest.

FSO's? love them -had several -all moved on to good homes. Currently Yugo-ing and weekend Gaz-ing -to keep the Eastern end of the forum up!

I'm actually very disappointed that you'vebought this car...

...but only because I thought Craig and Jenny had bought it to bring on a Streetsafari event! I saw the pics Jenny posted on FB and assumed it was theirs. Still, it would have definitely out-crapped my Princess.

I can't believe you have saved this, bravo!

They are incredibly crap in pretty much every way you can think of. I have raced a few, and they are indeed strong cars and can batter almost any other car into submission- although they can really rot out from the inside. I remember many of these being scrapped when they are only 3 or 4 years old because of peculiar faults like duff rear axles, their low values and high cost of spares often consigned them to the scrapheap. There are many cheats the banger boys use with these to make them go better, like substituting the distributor and ignition systems for Ford items and fitting a Weber carb e.t.c.

Yes, I remember parts prices being ridiculous too. They probably weren't subsidised, unlike the actual cars (now that we've got you, heh heh...). Our red ones went for bangering, never heard how they did. :(

Still a top save though. I still like them.

Well done, save of the year and we're barely into January :) I don't recall ever having seen a Polonez in the metal, but (and I think I may have mentioned it some time ago) when I worked in Telford a local taxi firm were running Caros (probably diesel). They were based in Oakengates, probably within site of the sad-shite Hereford in another thread and just round the corner from an establishment that I suppose used to sell Ladas, but by then (late 90s) just serviced them and had the odd secondhand Niva up for sale. Does anyone know, is Telford still as good for shite or is it all post-scrappage Kia Picantos now :(

Awesome save, I love these cars.

I got this badge at the Scottish Motorshow in about 1989:

FSOBadge.jpg

I remember my friend was given F525 USX in 1994 to run around his dad's haulage yard when he was 14. It was a white 1.5, with the '2 side window' bodystyle and oblong lights. It was an ex-builders car and was filthy with holed wings. The donuts you could do in it were impressive, but he eventually blew it up and put a 5th wheel in the back before wiighing it in.

I also have a wonderfully shite plastic model of one, but the box is nice with some decent illustrations of the car on the side :)
