Gained my Dads Fiesta after he gave up driving

Had a minor meltdown when I realised I had far too many cars.

Sold the BMW-great car when it worked but a horrible thing to work on.

Sold the Clio the same night I sold the BMW

Sold the Lexus to 320 Touring of this parish

Sold the Fiesta cheap to a mate

Combined the good points of the BMW (load lugging, comfy, quick and cheap to fuel) with my favourite parts of Mason (V8 and comfy) and bought an Audi S4 Avant. 4.2 V8 with a manual gearbox and LPG.

post-7629-0-00502800-1513808111_thumb.jpg

Locost still here, still terrifying in a good way and still requiring plenty of fettling.

A mate and I decided to get a track car. The answer was, of course, a £300 Ford Cougar 2.5V6

post-7629-0-43690400-1513808019_thumb.jpg

Was it fuck. Sold that after a lot of fucking about and a failed MOT and bought a broken MR2

post-7629-0-83419200-1513808089_thumb.jpg

£35 for a set of big end bearings and it wasn't broken. A bit of fettling and it's booked on its first track day in March,

End of year

Audi S4

Locost

1/2 an MR2

Roll on 2018! Although I'm pretty happy with my fleet just now.

Also got the SD1 running happily and in regular use, and all the mechanical work done on the XJ-S and Lotus. Discovery is also doing well. Others are all a bit dormant... next year.

Will update with pics when possible but I thought up until last night that I was doing really well but it's actually three in and three out much to my disappointment but three runners versus three scrappers ain't so bad.

TECHNICALLY my Zafira was actually bought this week in 2016 but has caused probably the most work so I thought I'd include it.

Actually, it's just reminded me that is been four in four out as I bought a sorted car for the Zafira in January.

SOOOOOO.

IN

Zafira 2.2, bought cheap at auction as a proper impulse purchase although reading the internet reviews of the 2.2 told me it was a cracker...

Blew a hole in piston 3 on the M4 at Bridgend although to be fair still got me all the way to Swindon misfiring but having removed the slow starter the previous day to repair/swap so if it has cut out it would have been a goner.

Against popular advice (mainly from this forum surprisingly) I purchased a concourse* Astra MK4 non runner until I played about with it for £100 and swapped the bits over. Nobends in my unit share scrapped it off before I got all the useful parts of it which really pissed me off and still does of I'm honest but either way the lump went in and started first time with no major issues. I messed up a bit with a few bits when swapping it over which came back to bite me by losing my clutch by Bristol during the worst flash storm I've ever experienced. I lost faith for a month or so and just sort of pissed about with it as new car number 2 worked so I kept using that instead.

As the Zafira is now my place of residence during my working week and being constantly getting disturbed down the unit as it's shared made me get the bloody thing working properly so the box got dropped off, a new clutch release bearing fitted, basically all hydraulics back to the master cylinder and all maintenance issues sorted she's turned out to be a great steer. Needed a bit for the MOT but nothing more expensive than a handbrake cable, it's been awesome and I'm chuffed I saved it, just need to keep on top of it all now.

SEAT Leon TDI

Massive impulse purchase after the zafira FTP'd in the unit while trying to bleed the clutch out but still in the fold. Cheap to run but had had a few problems. Best thing I did was but a spare engine and box from Gumtree which has proved invaluable.

Had FTP'D once when the engine mount bolt failed and the gearbox fell into the driveshaft. £100 for a new shaft and a box oil change transformed how it drove, problem was the impacts must have damaged 5 th gear inside the box hence the spares purchase. However, I drive it as a 4 speed for about 3 months then swapped the box out (dead easy on these), did a load of maintenance and it's been great, box feels the best of any VW I've driven, does 550 to a tank at 80mph and is reasonably quick too, hopefully it'll go through the next MOT as well as the last and should be a keeper for a while.

Avensis estate 2.2d.

Bought to replace my old ml as it was basically not worth fixing and what a lovely car, quick, so comfy, good on fuel, huge inside I'm really impressed with Toyota, feel so well made.

Out.

(X2) ford Ka for guess what, yes, terminal rust.

My old ml, sad day in many ways but truthfully I could have put a grand into it and still had an old timebomb. 5 years ago I said I'd scrap it if it failed an MOT badly etc but it soldiered on getting more and more bodged but it kept going, did me ok for 8 years so I shouldn't complain really, probably cost me £2k in 8 years plus £5k to buy, not bad really, less than a k a year, can live with that.

So overall a busy year, two more to sell then I think I'm on track for having the balance OK.

See what the future brings but the borked £1k rangie is a strangely tempting idea.

Keepers:

[] 1993 L Lada Riva 1.5E Injection Estate.  Took me 13 years to find the sucker, it's staying!

[] 1996 Citroen Xantia 2.0T Activa.  Wasn't sure how I'd take to it, but she's an absolute hoot to drive.  Near Rolls-Royce comfort and modern Audi/BMW smiting performance in one package, what more could I want?  Oh...a private reg that says "Xantia" of course...guess it's obvious it's owned by an enthusiast!  The way it goes around corners is just uncanny, and I kind of really want to get it on a track to really see what it can do.  ...and probably give far supposedly quicker cars something to worry about.

[] Sinclair C5.  Aka lazy man's way to exercise the dog.  He's half husky and will happily run at 15-20mph for hours.  C5 is great fun to ride, especially in MK with off-street cycle paths everywhere.

Really need to get some more photos of it.  Possibly the scruffiest C5 out there, but it's used year round so I don't really mind.

Definitely moving on soon...

[]1988 Saab 900i 3-Door Automatic.

Currently in "dry dock" after spectacularly blowing its head gasket at the end of the summer.  A friend has expressed interest in it, so current plan is to sort the HG out soonish, throw a fresh year's test on her and then move on.  She's the car I've had for the longest other than the 107 and I'm dearly going to miss her.

Probably the nicest driving C900 I've ever piloted, and the last I'll likely ever find in that spec.  The 8v injected engine works really well with the auto box.  Mid range punch is far better than it should be, and actually seems quicker between 30 and 70 than a 16v manual.  I really love that car, but fear I just don't have the time just now that it really needs.  Nothing major, but there are a laundry list of random things that need sorting.

[] 2009 Peugeot 107 Verve.

First car I ever bought new, and has actually been a cracking little car.  Only pondering selling because it doesn't have a space on the drive and is being used so rarely these days that the battery is going flat!

Would swap straight off for a reasonable Mk I Cherokee in Limited or Limited SE spec...

My fleet, two keepers.

Xantia 1.9td with leather and aftermarket alloys. Cost me £250 a couple of months ago, has done over 4000 miles in those two months. Drives absolutely brilliantly, you wouldn’t believe it has 214000 on the clock. A bit rough looking with major lacquer peel and a couple minor battle scars but that’s allowed on the old girl, and she is gonna get a paint in the spring.

Peugeot 205 1.6 auto, K reg, one owner previous to me buying it 10 months ago for £700. Absolutely unmarked as it should be after it’s 34000 miles covered. Have already turned down an offer of 2 grand for it. It has genuine gti front end on it and genuine 1.6 gti pepperpots on it.

One unsure of. Peugeot 407 2.7 v6 hdi coupe, 07 reg, 84000 miles, absolutely loaded with spec, 6 speed auto, remapped to 248bhp fast and comfortable. Hardly use it since I got the xantia. Wouldn’t need much for me to part company with it. When it needs road tax it’s the only time I’m glad I’m registered disabled! It’s a really nice car and lovely car but for my fucked back I really need hydraulics hence the xantia.

Ps the xantia is an xud turbo with a Bosch pump and I work in a chippy, which probably explains why I do most mileage in it lol

Out:

1999 Mitsubishi Spacewagon.

Quite liked this old bus, went like the clappers, and was completely reliable for the time I owned it. Sadly rampant rot on the rear inner wings called time on this come the MOT.

Was sold to a bunch of lads via gumtree who took it on a 'hilarious* banger rally' to benidorm. Assumed scrapped in spain, or probably still parked somewhere...

Inbound Cost: £300

Outbound Return: £200

Repairs: £0

Loss: £100 (£10 per month)

In:

2005 Honda Jazz.

After we banned my octogenarian father from driving, I gained his car. Had only done 18k in twelve years, but it would appear that for the last couple it has been driven by feel. Every panel has some sort of dent or scrape and a very dented front crossmember where he rear ended a Harley Electraglide at a set of traffic lights.

It's only the base 1.2 but goes well enough, and seems to get 42mpg no matter how it's driven.

Down side is that I have never had a vehicle that suffers from as much on road bullying as this one, people seem to actively either ignore it completely or cut you up at every opportunity!

Needs a bit of attention in the new year as the anti-roll bar linkrod fell off the other week. It's started to rust as well, rear arches and around locks etc.

Techically I'm only the guardian of this vehicle, so it'll stay for the forseeable.

In & Out:

2004 Renault Laguna II 2.0T

Purchased on a whim, and for the first couple of months it impressed, then things started to go down hill - which can only happen with a Laguna II,

I liked the comfort, rapid whooshy pace and looks. It was pretty much a top spec car when new, and most of the electronics worked. The previous owner (from this parish) had spent a fortune on it. It even sailed through an MOT.

Sadly things started to pack up, The cooling fan kept blowing fuses and it would overheat. Some electrics were dependant on others, so if one thing didnt work, it then wiped out other functions. Not essential but highly irritating!

Final straw came when it blew something on the turbo which then confused the hell out of the autobox, meaning that as it was down on power, it wouldn't kickdown on demand and became a real slug to drive. By this point the writing was on the wall for it, yes, the faults were probably something and nothing, and it could probably have been repaired quite easily, but I'd lost my mojo with it, and gained a constant and growing fear that one morning it will think it's a tumble dryer - Ironically as that has probably been its fate.

It wouldn't do more than 25mpg even on a run, and averaged between 19-22mpg on the commute, which to me is not good on a 2.0, hell my old Jag 3.2 V8 would do about the same! Heavy road tax as well!

Although by far the most irritating thing was that you couldn't adjust the clock, as it was dependent on the Sat Nav working - it was missing it's disc.

I sold it to myself at work and it was last seen on the back of a transporter headed for the auctions.

Oddly it appears not to have had a COD issued against it, as it still appears on the DVLA - however it's not been taxed since it sold at auction.

It even made the company £73 in profit!

Inbound Cost: £200

Outbound Return: £125

Repairs: £75

Loss: £150 (£37.50 per month)

I seem to recall saying in last year's thread that 2017 would be a quiet year on the car front.

In and Out

Rover 45 1.4 freebie, turned out to have a knackered engine and was generally a bit of a dog.  Pulled to bits, sent off to be washing machines.

post-5492-0-38623100-1496503882.jpg

MG ZR 1.4.   Completely failed to bond with this thing, devoid of any positive traits at all to my eyes and within a few weeks I'd sold it to my friend's wife despite it being removed from their house like this on the day of sale due to what I later found out was a failed fuel pump relay.  They love it to bits so I still have to see it regularly, in fact I had to go and rescue him in a supermarket car park just this morning as the battery terminals keep coming off.  It has various issues but they seem to be able to overlook its less than sterling reliability record.

post-5492-0-98964300-1503783993.jpg

Rover 420iL.  Bargain of the century for £50, suspected HGF turned out to be the wrong header tank cap, a new wiper mechanism and door handle sorted its other main issues and it drove nicely but the exhaust was knackered, it idled badly and the headlining and door cards were falling apart.  After a couple of months it really did blow its head gasket, it's gone to a local trader with an uncertain future ahead of it.

post-5492-0-67804400-1510417431.jpg

Out

Ford Puma 1.7.  Great fun, lovely to drive but too much needed for its MOT, even before it burst a power steering pipe.  Probably should have coughed up to mend it but fortunately someone else did and it's still going.

post-5492-0-62416600-1490462806.jpg

Rover 214SEi, tested my patience and fought hard against being resurrected following HGF on the drive home.  Got bought by a local chap who not only fixed it but used it for a European rally, raising loads of money for charity.  It's still going strong and looks to be in excellent hands.

post-5492-0-55329800-1474146700.jpg

Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi SLX.  Possibly the dullest car I've ever owned but it did a superbly reliable job over 18 months being used as a workhorse for our IT company and I got rather attached to it.  Sold due to boredom and job change plus alarming noises from the rear suspension suggesting expensive repairs for the impending MOT.  The new owner seems to have agreed as it didn't get a new one and is currently sorned, sadly.

post-5492-0-45382500-1496001725.jpg

In

Honda Accord 2.3SR.  After getting fed up with broken MG Rover products, Mr_Bo11ox and RobT conspired together to find me this gem a couple of weeks ago and it's ace.  Gradually getting to really like it and hoping it can be a relatively long-term keeper to give me time to get the mojo back.

post-5492-0-73606800-1513876379.jpg

Stayed

Toyota Hiace Powervan 2.4D.  Now camperised and spent a couple of weeks taking me round France a couple of months ago, totally dependable and endearingly scruffy.  Needs to be used more this coming year, getting attached to it now and can't see it going anywhere any time soon.

A very lucky addition was the ex-Junkman p38. This received a fresh mot in October, and continues to do sterling work draining the south-easts petrol supply.

2cv is still languishing in the garage, plans are afoot to tidy the hasty filling and shody prep that I did previously. Without rear seat belts I'm struggling to justify keeping this in the fleet much longer.

Lotus hit the road for a month over summer, I do like the flexibility that the monthly direct debit Road tax system offers (albeit inadvertently).

Looking back, it's been a busy year this year... So this is part 1 for now.

Inwards;

The new year brought these two in almost immediately;

This was brought in as a replacement for my Jumbuck, had a short mot and a lot of miles. I had it retested early and put it to use as a daily, it was the 1.9 and was slow.

post-2711-0-65791800-1514128450_thumb.jpg

This came in at the same time with a running fault and around 150k on the clock. I spent a few months on and off trying to rectify it, but wasn't able to find the cure.

post-2711-0-22200400-1514128453_thumb.jpg

This I rescued from scrap when the owner attempted to trade in at a main dealer and was told they didn't want it, it had a replacement spring, a tyre and and an mot and went up for sale within a couple of weeks.

post-2711-0-77197500-1514128456_thumb.jpg

This came from a friend of my folks' who had lost her husband and was now using his car, I paid her what she was asking, replaced the cambelt and water pump and sold it to a lady who very quickly wrote it off.

post-2711-0-61814900-1514128459_thumb.jpg

I'll have to rummage up some more pictures, but there's a V70, S60, 206, Laguna and Mrs Ruff's new berlingo to add.

Another one bought with a slight running fault, brought up to mot standard and given a thorough clean, fault still present when sold. Modern diesels are crap.

post-2711-0-31319500-1514128472_thumb.jpg

Outwards:

Cleaned and preened, fetching £600

post-2711-0-87034300-1514128462_thumb.jpg

Also fetching £600 and ticking over 190k whilst in my ownership:

post-2711-0-51748300-1514128465_thumb.jpg

The second knock was enough to finish Mrs Ruff's Hdi, and so it went to to copart.

post-2711-0-59540500-1514128468_thumb.jpg

£300 came in for the 307 which ended up in northern france.

Here is the latest two:

27443761559_b15f41fab0_k.jpg1995 Renault Clio RT-D. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

Couldn't stop looking at MK1 Clios. This one then appeared on Auto Trader not a million miles away, so arranged a viewing in Hemel. Drove well so bought it a week later. It's had replacement glow plugs now so starts first time, even if it is grumbling a bit when cold. Thermostat seems to be iffy, but it's done tiny mileage considering it's a diesel, so I suspect it'll be better with use. Runs happily enough and returns some good MPG, so should be a good winter hack.

39191721262_dd4b3cef3f_z.jpg1995 Renault Clio Baccara. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

So this one also appeared. I had been semi looking for a Baccara interior, instead I got the whole car after being offered it for £250 on Facebook (which increased to £300 after the seller lobbed on a new cambelt and a spare stereo), it's unique in the sense it was an automatic which then got a manual gearbox at 6 years old. As it's a 1.8 it goes well too. Some paint issues and various dents, as well as dubiously legal tyres, but the seats are great and it's really nice to drive, the suspension is soft and its really refined for its age.

406 gone (Sorry Barrett, didn't mean to sell you a car you don't like) and the AX is now for sale.

Only wheels for 18 years. Does that make me a giffer ? Not really a giffer wagon though, lets be honest.

Must be some kind of record.

Somewhere.

A bit sad compared to all you lot.

Has anyone else on here had only one vehicle for that long ?

Nice collection there. The original mini's are a property laugh. My first car was a mini clubman, very posh as it had a wooden dash. It was hand painted blue. Crashed it within a month of passing my test but knocked the dents out and all ok, until the gearstick dropped through the floor...

This took a bit to do. I didn't realise how many cars I had got through this year! Completely forgotten some of them.

Year start: 2007 Civic, 2005 Laguna, 2005 Saab 9-5.

Out:

Saab 9-5 with a dodgy gearbox. Bought from a colleague last year. Sold to Hooli.

In & out:

Smart Roadster. Bought cheap with an intermittent fault on the gearbox and suspected body computer fault (Mercedes dealer said). Gearbox fault was a broken wire to a sensor and nothing to do with the body computer. Drove around for a couple of months and had a lot of fun.

Sold for the MGB.

In:

1974 MGB GT. Costing me loads of money while it sits around broken and rotting away.

Out:

2005 Laguna V6. I loved this car and still miss it. Sold to angle.

Replaced with the Aldi A4.

In:

2010 Audi A4 2.0TDi. I didn't really want this. It's done 161k and had issues. However it was my parents old car and it's been thoroughly looked after. Mostly agreed as I got it cheap (for what it is) and my other half wanted it (more desirable apparently than our other cars). Fault was fixed with a £120 valve - Audi wanted £330 for the same part. A Bosch part naturally.

No change:

2007 Civic EX 2.2 CTDi

I've owned this for nearly 6 years now and currently sitting at 142k miles. No intention of ever getting rid. If I do, I'll probably donate it to my mother-in-law when we have kids, as I rather they be in this than her Corsa C. Struggling to find pictures as I never have to as it just gets the job done without fuss.

Year end: 1974 MGB GT, 2007 Civic, 2010 Aldi A4

No idea what will be in store next year! I'm going to guess something British and 1970s. Or maybe another 2000s Renault?
