R56 BINI Cooper. Courtesy of @Split_PinBought as spares/repair. Got it going cheaply through good fortune. Only vehicle currently in use as everything else in winter hibernation. Fits the bill perfectly. Lovely to drive but has some issues. Will probably be moved on or scrapped in July when MOT runs out.

I wasn't really intending to make any particular fleet changes this year but as usual it's happened anyway.  At this point I feel I'm more or less just a passenger in this process, cars just come and go by themselves and I just try to keep up with the paperwork.

In

2001 Honda CR-V West One

Realised I don't actually have a photo of this one.  Replacement for the Octavia.  A bit scruffy, totally reliable; just the way I like them.  If it was more economical, would be just about perfect for everything.  Bit rusty in places, smells funny and came on a set of the most appalling tyres I've seen on an MOT'd car but otherwise tip top and, after the initial MOT and tyre expenditure, has been low maintenance.

2001 Ford Puma 1.7

20211024_140057.thumb.jpg.a63d77ea4385b36b79486ede6636824a.jpg

I wanted a cheaper runaround/commuting car and missed my old Puma, this turned up locally and is quite simply marvellous.  Low mileage, superb condition, 2 large folders of history, filler-packed rear arches are its only real fault and that is going to be sorted.  Really should keep this for a while, it's a good one.

Out

2005 Skoda Octavia 1.8T VRS

20210427_183144.thumb.jpg.0e21b00f540ba227135146c9fbfcd283.jpg

Sadness.  Owned this longer than almost any other car - nearly 3 years - and at 203,000+ miles was getting a little needy but still marvellous.  I got the wheels refurbed this year and it had a new clutch last year too, I really liked this car and wasn't really planning to change it.  Abruptly developed a major running issue, absorbed a lot of cash on fruitless diagnostics and repairs, I threw in the towel and sold it to @twosmoke300 who only went and fixed it.

2003 Ford Transit Minibus

20210116_143234.thumb.jpg.40e16a0ad263d8541253070dd3280130.jpg

In theory a great idea, was a low mileage ex-college minibus with no visible rot and most of its seats already removed, bought last year and immediately regretted.  A daunting camper conversion project I immediately realised I had no desire to complete, a load of issues the seller was dishonest about which cost a lot to fix and an impending move to a house it wouldn't have fitted on the driveway at meant it was shipped on after a few months having barely done any miles in it.

1977 Leyland Princess 1.8 HL

20210327_175518.thumb.jpg.8781089f9db3837d107c7e7279110ec3.jpg

Yes, that one.  I wrote enough about it on this forum to bore everyone to death.  Got it to where it looked semi-presentable from a distance and was reliable, ran out of jobs I wanted to do, had to admit it wasn't actually that nice to drive and it really needed bodywork attention which I didn't want to get into.  Sold to a bloke who, impressively, drove it home from Devon to Kent, hopefully its restoration and preservation will continue.

In and Out

2001 VW Transporter T4 1.9TD Camper

20210226_093323.thumb.jpg.d47db016ddfcf0c8ad99a63cf9d490d4.jpg

Bought from a friend-of-a-friend, I really should have stopped to think whether I really wanted another campervan, I really have no luck with them and house renovations and other life stuff have taken precedence.  With this and the Transit debacle, I definitely should have kept the Granvia I sold to @Arthur Foxhake.  The VW was kindly delivered by @worldofceri, immediately proved to be nigh on undriveable due to a seized gear linkage.  That was easy enough to fix but the van turned out to be pretty knackered and unreliable, racked up some decent repair bills, wasn't very nice to drive and just generally annoyed me.  Gone off to a new home to have its rusty bits fettled.

Stayed

2002 BMW F650CS

The first year I've had my licence so I've gradually started to add a few miles onto this, it's now done its summer commuting duties and is now hiding under a cover on the driveway.  Total issues this year: one blown tail/brake light bulb and a corroded connection in the light.  Did get treated to some new Continental tyres as the ones it was wearing turned out to be 10 years old, had a service, hasn't really wanted anything else doing to it.

I originally thought that not much actually happened this year. I was wrong...

Out:

Sold the E39 540i 6-speed for more than I paid for it over 2 years prior, and despite it needing a lot of work by the time I sold it. That was the reason for selling as the money is better invested in an M5 which can hopefully join the fleet next year. It appears to be back on the road now.

In:

59k Mile BMW E38 728i. I've actually bought this for my better half. However with this being way too nice to be driven in winter, and needing a few cosmetic repairs, it will stay with me until Spring next year.

51722616564_90d3afb62d_h.jpg

1995 Oldsmobile Aurora. I can't believe it myself but this is now the 3rd Oldsmobile Aurora I own. Dead alternator and suspected head gasket failure. Im hoping to make at least 2 nice ones out of the 3 I own.

51221265978_9b3e39d6bb_h.jpg

The rest is still here. Notable improvements are the Corona EXiV which has had its first MOT in over 10 years (only to overheat and ruin its waterpump). Only need to replace the rear brake hoses and bleed the brakes now before it goes back on the road. Big transformation compared to earlier this year, with more improvements to come.

51410120477_68dceced03_h.jpg

Plenty of other stuff got fixed (mainly Celsior, E39 528i, black Mark VIII and W140), Im hoping to get the Celsior MOT'd next year and might replace it with a cleaner import from Japan. We shall see...

I plan to buy no more cars for a while (let's see how long that lasts) so here's my wrap-up of the year, since I finally changed cars this year.

Cars In:

The big-ticket item: Rover P6 3500S

IMG_20210322_165941.thumb.jpg.725584f90b2528e2c3e1e5da4e2900df.jpg

Bought in March to see if I was man enough to handle classic car ownership, I decided rather than start off with something tame and easy to work on like a Mini or Spitfire, one of the most complicated and awkward mass-produced cars of the 70s would fit the bill. That bill, as it turned out, was quite a big one and I have used the car less than I wanted to this year. As such it's now parked up in winter hibernation while I save my pennies to carry out some required works in 2022. Has it scared me off classic cars yet? No, I love it. It's a headache though and I will never see a financial return as I think I overpaid for this, P6 values are currently not high and there is still some potentially expensive work to be carried out. I plan to keep it for a while then move it on and get another (simpler) classic as there are so many cars I'd like to try before "proper" cars are legislated out of existence.

Next up: Mazda MX-5 Sport

IMG_20210925_181003.thumb.jpg.055cfd1b7ed113ea8edd3f137dc6abf5.jpg

As with most things in my life, my hunt for a new daily driver that was fast, comfortable, refined and economical resulted in me buying something with absolutely none of those traits whatsoever.

Having sampled @Six-cylinder's Mk1 during a FoD meet in the summer I was instantly hooked on MX5s, but knew I needed that 6th gear as I do spent a lot of time on fast roads and the slightly more refined nature of the Mk2.5 cars was where my heart settled. I waited a while to pounce on this after a few weeks browsing the classifieds but it resulted in this, a tidy car that seems to have had a fair bit of important work done recently, low mileage, top specification and air-con too. A jaunt up to Lincolnshire ended up with me bringing it home after agreeing a fair price with the seller. There are a few small jobs that need doing, plus going through it with Bilt-Hamber but since buying the car I've not had a single day off that's lined up with good weather so sadly I'm going to have to let the car suffer this winter and do the undersealing when it dries up in the spring. It's fantastic fun, makes a great noise and puts a big smile on my face, I can see this one staying for a while - if I was to replace it as a daily, I'd like to keep it and build it up for amateur rallies although that depends entirely on money at the time.

Cars Out:

"You never forget your first" - Ford Focus Mk1.5 Flight

Yep, this one was my first car. My dad got it from my grandmother in 2017 after she'd stopped driving a while beforehand, and he needed an emergency car when his Land Rover decided to play a game of Solihull Roulette™ and lost big time.

IMG_20180222_162706.thumb.jpg.d1d735d48914436cbca83b5d83869a73.jpg

I learned to drive (well, on the road - I could already operate a vehicle) in it in 2018 and kept it until September this year when the Mazda replaced it. Did a fair few miles in it and had very few issues except for a coil pack and a full set of road springs. It only had about 77k on it when I sold it to @Fabergé Greggs who I hope is still getting on well with it.

End of year balance: 2 (+1 over 2020)

That's a bit of a wall of text for a 3-car Tat Account but never mind, much like an old Perkins with a faulty stop solenoid, once I start I just can't stop.

Toyota Corolla E110, was in wife’s family since 2001. Sadly the engine ended up with crankcase compression and blew several oil seals so it pissed out everywhere. Managed to stem the flow somewhat but then a radiator hose blew and the rad itself was starting also leaking. Only just replaced the dented front wing 😕

Now let me think ...

OUT-ish:

20210329_151043.jpg

These both arrived on the same day. Saab was loaned to yee old man whilst I fixed his Bini. Saab was then MOTd, serviced and fettled (brakes & tyres etc) and the raffled on here. I believe its still providing Stella service.

Rover still in the fleet.

On the above same day as those being dropped off (thanks to Ceri 👍) he took custody of :

0D1AEE36-501C-4076-91F2-EF2DD8B87246.jpeg.d747f13421f51a827ed99c5bc2e3035f.jpeg.jpg

Picture shamelessly stolen from a previous owners for sale thread. I had the alternator refurbished to sort charging woes, and then Ceri became its new owner. Think a wheel bearing and possibly some front discs and pads were replaced - But again think it's still providing A to B transport.

Next up:

20210523_110400.jpg

As always - this was delivered by Ceri and after washing it, I fired it over to local garage for a Pre-Mot, of which they gave me a nice little list to sort out, BUT "Yeah we're a but busy at the moment, but we can recommend someone", sheepishly I proceeded and a rather sound Polish gentleman tackled the list of jobs (Bit of welding, many bushes & drop links followed by all rear brake pipes and flexis), it then passed so I treated it to a full gates cambelt kit & water pump (with Subaru thermostat). Pressed it into daily duties for a little while but I never really gelled with it, yes it was comfortable, yes it would eat up miles ... but it just missed something 🤷‍♂️, so sold it back on here (Again think it's still providing transport duties)

Then comes the Derv Bus of many miles, god do I love this thing, yes she's got a bit of lacquer peel, yes she isn't a T5, but I don't care. I love it.

20210803_192642.jpg

I've racked up some miles in the old girl, she's gotten me out of some serious 'poo-poo' and saved the day, when I was let down by a local chap to move the Ladas (So instead she dragged a massive trailer with absolutely no bother) and continued to Ferry stuff back and forth all night. And it used hardly any fuel. But as they say all good things must come to an end, so come Monday she'll be gone 😪.

I was really struggling to think if I'd had any fleet movement at all in 2021, seeing as how time basically has had no meaning over the last couple of years and everything has sort of blended together. I thought this might actually be my first year since passing my test with NO incoming cars! That's total bollocks, of course. Lucky I keep a spreadsheet on my cars, eh?

Turns out I started off the year with just nine cars. In March my pointless, only got it because a 'celeb car designer' gave it to me Xantia went off to pastures new *(to be broken up)

20201106_113522.thumb.jpg.314ae25400e580b1b63f423e8a37d234.jpg

Then in July,my quite-nice-but-more-of-a-project-than-I-was-expecting BX 14 Preview fucked off too. I found some paperwork for this yesterday and texted the guy asking if he wanted it - he says he's almost done replacing all the HP pipes etc so it looks like this is deffo gonna live again

20201015_174028.thumb.jpg.28d8907e3cb58520c4eddf85cf496ee1.jpg

The same month, I swapped my Panhard Dyna Z kit of parts for some work on the Palladium

P1090171.thumb.JPG.d09c9ce9a7ac07589efb6f701eb08673.JPG

In April somebody gave me a free BMW E39 which I've been dailying ever since. It's a good car.

20210421_173555.thumb.jpg.a6724c670a9620f0142282025d3f0784.jpg

Then I gave Bramz some money for the 205 he had abandoned on my drive, and I've been driving that ever since too. It's a superb car.

20210513_094033.thumb.jpg.74ca0da836e2ef64cbc6714de6417dd6.jpg

Then I had a mad moment and bought a really cheap P6 2000SC which I drove for most of the year until it broke, and is now waiting for me to get off my fat arse and sort out. I like it, but mainly just because it's nice to have 'an old car' for bimbling to work in rather than for any inherent qualities it has.

IMG_20210528_212502_306.thumb.jpg.30e7f9c4499c9704c04d00116a50b161.jpg

Otherwise it was fleet inertia - quite literally in the case of these three, which haven't moved at all in 2021 - excuasable in the case of the Heron, which has no engine, and the BX which needs quite a bit of work, but inexcusable for the R16 which only needs piddling little things sorted before it can go back into rotation.

P1070812.thumb.JPG.4a5261c0ca6392a2e32b63ee87ca0925.JPG

IMG_20170324_084948_869.thumb.jpg.4dbf0e179ab452b9a5acd17b3ccab331.jpg

img_3396.thumb.jpg.37905a3a91cd726e20e7fd0dc88c59a5.jpg

Also inertia in the Vintage section of the fleet, although the Riley has been out quite a bit

IMG_20190710_123945-1.jpg.256c3147dc79e4f45c3d5ef7f72296f8.thumb.jpg.0ee33fcf7328b960ad2e93fc4f6d3321.jpg

And the Palladium is looking fucking amazing and really just waiting for an excuse for me to take it out, but with no rear lights of any kind and no hood it's not the best thing for short, dark days in December. I'll deffo get it out before the end of the year though.

20211029_152256.thumb.jpg.8015aa0c29dccdc33f3a6f657a0d3300.jpg

Oh, also I have another Xantia but I don't have a photo of it. It ra out of MoT in July and I only just noticed the other day, as it's been out of favour since the BMW and 205 arrived.

So, that's it. Three out, three in and six static. Pretty average turn of events, really. The year's not over yet though, eh.

I've had this Saab for over 2 years now,  which is a minor miracle for me. My current daily although it has issues with the alternator despite being replaced and a permanently illuminated SRS light which has dampened my mojo for it recently

And also have this CRV which joined the fleet in July, the Mrs uses it as her daily. I don't see me getting rid of it till it dies, it's a brilliant motor. Auto, leather interior,  cruise,  sat nav, working  A/C etc. Couldn't get better for the £800 it cost me.

Changed both the moderns this year too, so a full fleet refresh has happened.

2021 hasn't seen me signing any registration documents whatsoever, though I nearly had to sell my non-shite 3 series in order to stop the bank repossessing my house, and I came pretty close to finding a suitable cliff to shunt my wife's Bini over.

This year has been an odd one for me as I've been ultra ill and made some badly thought out purchasing

IN then OUT:

First purchase of the year was this wrecked dolomite sprint, it couldn't support itself so was a job to get off the truck without ruining it more , got there in the end with timbers and ratchet straps.  End result stripped and sold.20210605_202012.thumb.jpg.459924deaa4a77e158c7156640e21215.jpg

Then a 1.3 morris ital came in courtesy of @worldofceri pro delivery service. It was to be welded up but instead I got it to run, drive and stop after 20 years in a field and swapped it for a much more viable 1.7 ital.20210718_180015.thumb.jpg.b932837a887480acca7cd8be0c779f66.jpg

This engineless marina with crash damage came in again via the resident car mover, a car that had been sold 3 times in quick succession and robbed of parts each time, I got it as a shell with interior, ended up swapping for another marina 1.3 auto.20210809_120816(0).thumb.jpg.adc04f46b68d90d048fb35fbd9e34634.jpg

This oddity popped up nearby so after abit of a chase about I picked it up via an ambitiously loaded trailer, and also managed to get another go of pneumonia simultaneously! A 1275 marina engine and viva axles in some kind of random home brew special, it ended up beimg stripped/sold and the engine repatriated into a marina!

20211108_185237.thumb.jpg.83befcb76b08ecd616092cee5a08a859.jpg

IN

At the start of the year around the time of the Sprint this 120LSE popped  up for sale, so I bought that and was literally days away from nearly dying in hospital when I hand winched it off the truck! Currently awaiting resto work.20210221_144204.thumb.jpg.0c95a6ca7b4bffe1911f989454a7465c.jpg

Morris ital 1.7, this was the result of swapping for my 1.3 ital, has sat in a garage since 1989, does run but wants welding , and a few minor parts to complete.20210830_131823.thumb.jpg.4a029cf34b9cd97f3f2755db794c8cc9.jpg

The bronze marina is abit too knackered so rather than engage in a weldathon I've swapped it for this machine , a 1.3 auto which is a bizzare spec but I can't wait to go round in it never breaking traction but understeering like mad!20211125_132400.thumb.jpg.d5ca42027b23d50293f1508f3a7d2b66.jpg

The other half needed a replacement car so without any consideration or deliberation we settled on this mk2 focus 1.6 Estate for 500 quid, abit messy inside and cut out at random (dash clocks so easy fix for a specialist) and a deep clean has sorted that out!20211204_154718.thumb.jpg.24f2e8348a115c5735c6617e011db568.jpg

I spotted this dolomite for sale and just indiscriminately pounced on it,,not 100% on what to do with it but will see once it lands!2065822743_Screenshot_20211202-122811_SamsungInternet.thumb.jpg.c4aa850a2e70f93fcb6d4c1eebf1bf44.jpg

Out

First to get the cull was the suzuki ignis, a great car for 3 years or so and actually a poor choice of car to sell but I couldn't keep it forever as there's other stuff out there., sold to a gardener lad who seemed to love it! 20210725_193904.thumb.jpg.fd85960a24b0bc3e8e33b4f0d0e2d1e7.jpg

next up the other halfs celerio was a finance payment every month we didn't want so sold it and sacked off the finance on it. The only picture I can find!IMG-20201208-WA0011.thumb.jpg.7831717e2c5383cbad0d62a9d9d0c382.jpg

Then after 11 years and 100k miles almost this had to go really so the smokey s100 engine was replaced with a random 130 engine and it was sent onwards hopefully to be enjoyed way up north! Pictured here in better times20160528_204314.thumb.jpg.8011a35822146a733ec1ae899b76987a.jpg

Remaining cars

Proton, recommissioned at the start of the year and has been a beast of a car since!20210718_213147.thumb.jpg.e23a604e78c6f56729f8443dc95bed6d.jpg

merc 300e, had this for 10years currently laid up doing nothing!20210803_105643.thumb.jpg.31327d740ce13615653ffef2128ac3ef.jpg

daihatsu charade was bought for a daily, I passed it on to the parents as a replacement for the merc when that ran out of MOT. However it has since developed engine issues.

First time doing this, hopefully I'm doing it right!

Out

2006 Subaru Forester XTEN 2.5 - hadn't been used since Feb 2020, slapped a new MoT on it and got ride of it ASAP. Quite crusty underneath (find one that isn't!), fast, great Q car but never liked it as much as my old Outback.

Little change here, one minor movement.

2000 BMW Z3 2.8. Been here since 2011, leads a pretty blameless life and I Iike it. Currently wearing it's hard hat.

IMG_20210622_192354.thumb.jpg.4ea276824f87fabeb388410ec9e1f832.jpg

1985 Lorinser Mercedes 500 SEC. Been here 3 years, pretty good for it's years but no show winner. Doesn't get the use it deserves, I should sell it. Fab tool, glad to have owned it.

IMG_20210314_150729.thumb.jpg.f898d8ac6bd9e677ebabaf50e6485f1c.jpg

2007 Mercedes E320 cdi estate. Bought 3 years ago from AS, it's a reliable comfy daily tool. Passed to my son very recently while he waits for an electric company Skoda.

IMG_20210322_082624.thumb.jpg.8fb811d14eeb6a2b0120f408f2fe81da.jpg

2008 BMW 530D touring. Described by my son as a black Alfa, in theory it's his car though it has now been transferred to me to consider the error of it's ways. His job has changed since it was bought and it's not dependable enough for the miles it is now doing so has been replaced by a company car. When it arrives, it maybe some time.... At the moment it's emptying my coffers sorting the air suspension.

IMG_20200926_163022.thumb.jpg.a6d43ee8f390dec813f28f5b22e4609a.jpg

When the company car arrives I'll have to reassess which of two estates to keep. The Bm is in disgrace and worth more but I have a buyer ready for E Class so we'll see.

My XM, sold to one of my clients.

Still going strong. I've asked if I can buy it back because :

IMG_20210620_135058.thumb.jpg.9da115f5f9a8440b6e44eb3aa0849092.jpg

My C6 is also very out 😭

A potential out will be my '74 Dyane, it may be being swopped for something interesting I don't need.

The Buick' s still here it's my only streat legal car at the moment.

Reliant will be going when some legal stuff is sorted.

Still occasionally look for twin cylinder Visa and LNA...

1995 Peugeot 205 Inca 1.8:

Really enjoyed this one, didn’t expect to keep it as long as I did. Will definitely have another 205 in future.

2000 BMW 528i SE Auto:

Regretted selling my 523i almost immediately so when this one came up for sale on the forum I had to have it. A bit tattier than described and have had to spend quite a bit on it. It’s not perfect but it’s a great daily, probably the best all round car I’ve owned.

1989 SAAB 9000 2.0i CD:

Didn’t really get on with this, was shit to drive and could never get comfortable in it, good looking car though.

1996 Jaguar XJR6:

Picked this up last week, bit of a dream car for me but this one needs work before I can enjoy it. Watch this space.

1997 SAAB 9-5 2.3t SE

Last years winter barge, I liked it but would of much preferred it with an auto. Rear arches rotted at a rapid rate. Quite fancy another one as long as it’s an auto.

1989 SAAB 9000 2.0 CD:

See ins, took surprisingly ages to sell and lost money on it.

1995 Peugeot 205 Inca 1.8D :

Forum bike, now with @Supernaut. Made absolutely no sense to get rid of this  for a Jaguar XJR just as the bad weather was drawing in.

Only bought two cars this year, first was a Peugeot 106 XN off here. It had no water in it, overheated in roadworks, two days later heater matrix exploded. :(

IMG_6723.thumb.jpeg.b26cb835c52db46cccefb6f402129a77.jpeg

Then this Nissan Micra 1.0 which is nice and everything:

9FBE3A38-457C-4B05-96AE-F5DA3F97A2CB.jpeg.5f68240321c86e262f9034b05c10a3b0.thumb.jpeg.a1dd20cbc76594c6338d1b3769b60b16.jpeg

June - December, still trying to get my Smart Roadster running - nobody wants a broken Smart car. I've replaced everything, and now I have to replace the wiring loom which is hidden deep inside and needs -everything- removed. That's every single thing (body panel, interior), and engine taking out. Zero motivation to do this but I can't just stick this outside and it's taking up space. Fuck me.

The only good motoring news of this year is my SJ is finished and getting MOT'd next week (update! It conveniently caught fire and has been put back months while I obtain unobtainium parts)

Still have this fine beast, have spent quite a bit on it, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, :)

i also forgot I bought this ‘barn find’ which hadn’t been lost for £1400. Spent loads on it, needed loads doing to it, sold for £1950. Quite cute but slowest thing I’ve ever driven!
