Aspirations: 505 break de Dangel.

Bollocks, @barrett was right - there is another whole month.

Been a disapointing year numbers wise round here.

All my ins have also been outs bar the last one which remains.

Honda Insight that came in from @Asimo and was eventually roffled to @sdkrc.

This car is the main reason that it was a quiet year. It stayed for over 6 months, which is a long innings in the Shitpeas parking space. Will always regret selling it I think.

Fiat Panda 1.3 multijet diesel.

Came sans MOT from a popular internet auction site. I spent a fortune on parts, labour and an MOT, stitched a seat up, then roffled it to @paulplom (who then immediately sold it to @1duck I think).

First 205 of 2020. A 1.4 GR.

Purchased from @AlsoMike.. I then spent a fortune on it and sold it on at a healthy loss to @loserone

The second 205 of 2020.

1.7 or 1.8 Inca Diesel.

Purchased from @davehedgehog31, drove it round a bit and then roffled it out to @The Moog. Think it has been roffled on again. Great little car. Another one I regret selling.

Toyota Carina 2. 1.6.

Purchased from @tooSavvy and roffled out to @Cavcraft.  Not sure if it's moved on again since. A rare only solid thing.

which brings up too:

Vauxhall Cavalier 1.7td.

Picked off of eBay and Covid deliveted with the kind help of @davehedgehog31 @sdkrc and @Lacquer Peel

Will be staying till after the new year certainly, and pretty much the best thing to happen to me in 2020.

Final scores:

5 in, 5 out. One remains.

@juular that's an awesome fleet you have there.

Expect to have your brain picked on Trafic buying in the spring when all the crappy covid camper conversions are being sold off with no MOT..

I'll have at least one MK2 (2014) up for grabs in the new year at work if it's any good to you?

Quality over quantity this year?

Been a busier year than I thought.

I started off owning this thing which I'd bought last year with a blown turbo.

IMG_20191207_132655463.thumb.jpg.0017fe64f74a764c44092a1ddbfab62b.jpg

Plan was for it to be my daily but it was shit. Duly punted and the next contender was this

IMG_20200118_090704567.thumb.jpg.17980558641603cfbf248a139b0a8b4e.jpg

This was bought last year too for the same reason. Tatty but solid, it was bought with a noisy gearbox. New bearings fitted in the box and I trundled around with it before selling on early this year.

i also had temporary custody of this which I enjoyed very much.

IMG_20200207_122741859.thumb.jpg.a56fa6b4969c94f3f1c4c29c18541b68.jpg

I fixed a few bits and bobs for the owner who kindly let me use it to collect my first purchase of the year, this little bundle of fun.

16073819_IMG_20200301_1227023082.thumb.jpg.f2cf7697ad9a536557677aacc9e8d389.jpg

From the bulkhead forward it's all Clio 182. Bought as a project it's been made roadworthy and is amazing fun. Still here.

This little bundle of terror had been off the road for a while after a bump.

IMG_20200625_080233505.thumb.jpg.dc6ab70e148c9aa712f779a2132f1de7.jpg

It was duly fixed up and sold on quickly.

The S4 shat itself big time with slipped timing chain. It wasn't economical to fix so is currently at a mates unit being broken for parts and there's a good chance I'll get back more than if it wasn't broken. Still here, or at least some of it is.

IMG_20201118_145535066.thumb.jpg.dc4f8a8b5c9a8dad053b73dc947e3fae.jpg

This left a gap for a mile muncher which was ably filled by thisIMG_20200718_142354300.thumb.jpg.99a8e3b5b1ef6526c1f0180b9c3327c3.jpg

Possibly the lowest mileage 2.2cdti in the country-bought on 44k. Excellent at being a car. Still here.

Also still here is the 2zz MR2. IMG_20201107_131004377.thumb.jpg.ce6519b2e5ff594a1400c60d5363d4f0.jpg

We only managed a couple of track days this year but it's just had a new set of coilovers fitted so we'll need to find new excuses for being slow next year.

The icing on the cake for the year was these two

IMG_20200625_124730012.thumb.jpg.ebb13e77d2750d4501752313b9ec0118.jpgIMG_20200831_174755130.thumb.jpg.87d15af129c0b1c782bbc86619bed2ff.jpg

The burgundy one was languishing outside looking sorry for itself and after enquiries were made as was told the owner was looking to sell both. Both? Yep, the XJ40 was lurking in the garage. A deal was struck and first the x300 was resurrected with the help of @Tickman and passed on to @SRi05 who made it even better before passing it on.

IMG_20200822_204146984.thumb.jpg.1f9dba1eeb3a3a9745e110f6e2049f33.jpg

The XJ40 is still here and a lovely thing.

IMG_20201010_151920176.thumb.jpg.5225d4a85457ce8c2e031dd8036853fb.jpg

Next year the plan is for a Manta. That was the plan for this year though. Stay tuned...

Quieter year on the car front here this year to what I expected.

Sold to become a camper van.

Had enough of fragile Pugs, so something different was needed...

Also featuring a noisy manual gearbox, clutch on end of life care and dead air con. Still I consider it a bargain for £500. Actually fixed the air con today.

Not content with one Honda, it seemed natural to get another.3BC2F7A4-9CE1-4612-8EC0-3FB375805CDF.thumb.jpeg.43908558656ea2d8b10f04967f658e39.jpeg

700 quid acquired this derv Estate. Came free with bold tyres, suspension hanging out, broken Air con for a nice change, and a multitude of niggles. Sat nav crashing every 30 seconds was annoying, as it also controls heating stereo etc. It’s got a flaming touchscreen. Wizardry.

It wasn’t really the plan, but the accord was so much better than expected, it made sense. My longer term goal was to reduce numbers, and the Accord could do the job of two of the fleet, so after 4 years and 50k miles, the old Mk4 was moved on.

In the background a couple of old parts cars were stripped and dragged. This year I sold more parts than cars I reckon.

Out.

My Ford Mondeo-the engine mount went which took out the drive shaft. To be honest I was just keeping it going it really was an end of life car.

In.

My Ford focus st 225.

I bought it but being unimpressed with the performance I got it remapped straight away then bought the tuning bits for it to go to stage 2  it's now running 310bhp and 370ftlb torque.

All told, it's actually been quite a quiet year.  Perhaps my quietest whilst on the forum!

It's also been the most exciting.

In February - Nan's Mini joined the fold.  Even now, I can't quite believe that the Mini I used to LOVE riding around in as a 7 year old - is sat in my own garage.  I doubt it will ever really sink in.

IMG_5727.thumb.JPG.c5ba3cacca70e72ab95d893077b25a98.JPG

This took us up to 6 cars on the fleet, which isn't something I'm overly comfortable with (mainly because of tax!).  That said, both the Sierra and the Mini will be exempt soon enough.

Eventually, with redundancy at work and uncertainty around future opportunities - I took the difficult decision to sell my beloved Mercedes 190.  I doubt, somehow, I'll ever own another one as smart and as beguiling as this one.  My lad cried his eyes out when it went - literally sobbing.  I wasn't that pleased about it either, but such is life.  Despite already having owned 2, I'd probably have a 3rd if it was a good one.

I also had a brief fling with the Renault Vel Satis AS bike.  Brief because they have a habit of breaking.  Unfortunatley for Fat Pirate, it broke on him and not me.  This was in and out within a month.

20191107231859.jpeg

Plans for the new year?  I'd like to try a Toyota Camry with the full v6 experience. I will also likely end up in a modern because work, so will need to push the rules to the maximum to ensure I get something both presentable and interesting/sufficiently different.

Right. Not quite the year I was expecting. I didn’t think my appetite for old filth would ever diminish, and yet here we are.

Late 2019 I bought this Corolla from the garage who look after my Toyotas. My wife remarked that she liked it when we had it on loan and - in lieu of any decent ideas - I bought it for her as a Christmas gift 😐

832BA7A1-A292-44C9-973D-F0F384D60791.thumb.jpeg.81644812e99e0c7cfb4e5bc4f9a9cedb.jpeg

Sold to @Semi-Cand his impossibly handsome wife.

Another Toyota out. I thought they’d probably bury me in this thing but - with gearbox issues - the Granvia has gone off to @wuvvumto frustrate him instead of me.

I took in this beautiful Renault Clio in August for an absurd £200 Sterling. I absolutely love it, much to my wife’s chagrin. It’s also given my lovely Dad something to tinker with in some darker moments of Ill health, which I won’t forget when it comes to the service bill next month (!)

And finally (famous last words) the Multipla that joined us last week from @BeEP. This is supposed to be a 3 month stay, but I can already sense the family becoming very fond of it. Who knows?! Not i. But I like it a lot.

42BDDDFA-0952-4898-8120-232E4009AF7C.thumb.jpeg.5322b2f53feda903f4f7775f359315db.jpeg

Non movers? The Mini is, of course, still here. I took the COVID extension knowing a renewal wasn’t happening. It will get done, pretty well, in the next 12-18 months.

F5DBE41A-5140-46EB-B5BF-B7A25115CCBA.thumb.jpeg.52862747d1ec2d89eaec1bf8bb33bd3f.jpeg

And the Sierra? Yep. If I really explicitly trusted someone else to always do right by it - and could pay the money it owes me - I’d probably think about it. But I think that list of people is two long and neither (I don’t think) can take it on. One certainly can’t. Weird as it sounds, I’d never forgive myself if someone else let it down - so I’d rather it just took up a small part of the property and remained.

As for my signature car, the Avensis? It’s resting at the moment following an entirely expected MOT fail. Should be resurrected next month. 262,000 on the clock.

Out - BMW435d Gran Coupe - parted with it in January. The outrageous acceleration was a joy but I don’t miss the lease payments.
Kept - Mitsubishi Shogun - management’s car, also dog wagon, fridge mover and backup in case of zombie apocalypse. We love it.
In - Saab 9-3 floppytop - bought a few days ago so I can better blend in on AS!

Passing through - FIL’s Auris hybrid which I’ll be looking after while he’s isolating.

Yikes err ...

Out:

Defender of much madness. Should have kept it really, but fear of waking up to an empty drive did push home 'it has to go',  bloody brilliant tool and as usual spent too much on it.

Cooper s R55 clubman, got it without really looking at it or test driving it, again spent too much on it.

Transalp and x2 Honda CBR1000F, do miss the black and red CBR as it was a beast, and the Transalp was just a brilliant all round bike, no rocket ship BUT just did everything you asked of it.

Silver 850 Tdi - Mucho rust and donated a good few spares for my daily.

IN:

Other 850 Tdi - Purchased from a mate needing a few bits, an engine, cambelt and fuel pump belt kit, clutch kit, Vacuum pump and other parts later it is returning sterling service, and to be honest feels like a good old slipper ... slightly shabby looking but just fits.

Mk1 TT - Haven't 'jelled' with it, so will entertain reasonable offers.

S210 E320 - Brilliant, quiet and lovely. Don't like using it incase I scuff up the interior, it really is clean for an 'old' car. Pair of new tyres and some brake adjustments, it's been brilliant. Even performed well lugging a relative back home with too many belongings in the boot.

Bmw motorbike - Had a 'fuck it' moment and got something modern, every time I ride it i enjoy it more and more.

Still got x2 Lada Rivas, and a shit load of random spares.

Yikes how do you get the images to show between paragraphs? 😅

SPECTRAL REVOLVING DOOR: COVID EDITION

Ok, let's think. It's been a bloody weird year for me, with insurance premiums dropping rapidly and a general struggle to find a nice car.

This time last year I had a 306 Meridian estate, petrol automatic. I bought it as an economical solution to replace my 850 T5 as I couldn't afford the fuel bill. I miss that car, I asked GeordieInExile to buy it back but he won't sell!
It had 60k on the clock, and save for some dents and typical French build quality here and there, it was pretty decent.
IMG_1612.JPG.8d3671bc52036e708f16a10283651c33.JPG

and my XJ:

20200514_193040.jpg

which was on SORN for winter.

January:

306 out - after driving it for a couple of months, the seats started to bug my lower back no end. It was a bloody excellent An Car, frugal and reasonably practical, but bikes were surprisingly annoying to fit into it, and comfort was the major kicker. I also didn't like driving it that much.

February:
I'd been alerted to an automatic Honda Concerto 1.6i-16 on eBay which I bought unseen and had delivered.

20200217-145240.jpg

It was fucked. We don't talk about that.

At the end of Feb, the Concerto was sold for spares and replaced with a C30:

IMG_1641.JPG.24c30a8259db24fef3f8793847d8def2.JPG

which was ok but needed a lot spending on it (four wheels, a tyre, driveshafts, a lot of stuff I forget) and the insurance was astronomically bad. Did get me out of the shit though.

Nothing happened until May, when I sold the Jag to sort my finances out a bit better. I was bored though, and I'd started driving the C30 everywhere in manual mode... With some spare money I had a browse of eBay, and at the start of June I found myself in Wales, with a 205 DTurbo that didn't like starting:

20200613_195718.thumb.jpg.c456d4f99c1ad44f43741c873cb6e9ca.jpg

which I bump started, then drove home non-stop from Newport in case I couldn't get it running again. That was a fun little thing to clean up.
With manual cars now on the cards, things could start to change.

July:
Having settled into manual driving, I was bombing about in the 205, which was insured for peanuts and proving reasonably reliable. It tidied up pretty well.
Out of the blue, a Cooper S was foisted into my hands:

20200707_110453.jpg

which I could have kept if I felt like it, but had a few too many faults - and if I sold both that and the C30, I could get a decent daily. By this point I was worried that the C30s gearbox was slipping a bit, which didn't improve after replacing the knackered driveshafts, balljoints, and quite a few other bits.

August came around, the Mini was sold to a previous owner that happened upon the Marketplace listing and jumped on it, then the C30 was sold on here.
I was looking for a spaceship Civic to replace both, when I found a Civic Aerodeck on eBay for £reasonable.

20200815_124924.jpg

After a rocky start it's providing pretty reliable service, and is still here.

The 205 left in October, and was replaced with a manual MX5:

however it quickly started to appear as a bit of a money pit, so has now been sold.

I'm looking for a replacement, but I doubt much will show up before Christmas.

It's been a bit of a shit year for me and cars, hope I can find a good one soon.

Put the cursor in the area you want the picture to sit, e.g. in between the two words shown below then press the '+' sign in the bottom left.

I usually download all my pictures onto the draft and type while I'm waiting. Once that's done I put the pictures in.

Carried over. 2CV, Invacar, Fox, Tercel, Matiz...

EHGDz-RXYAMFBpa.jpg

...and CityRover.

EDPEZ79WkAI86OE.jpg

Oh, and this one.

EnndY3eW8AIEwqp.jpg

Sadly, the Fairmont was first out of the door, on 19th January before I flew to Aus. I still miss it. We'd clocked up 5000 miles together in just two months.

While in Australia, I bought a Citroen GSA in Coventry as it seemed a better way to get home from Heathrow airport than a coach.

By far the most I'd paid for a car in a long time £3500. But it is a clean, restored example and it has proved to be a good one.

When I started waking the fleet, the CityRover failed at the MOT, then Covid struck. During lockdown, I bought this Delica from a mate.

img_1306.jpg

Sadly it turned out to be fairly rotten and just not my cup of tea, so I swapped it for a Vectra and some cash.

Eew2ORfWkBACVQ9.jpg

Meanwhile, the CityRover was moved on to a new home. They were intending to get it back on the road, not sure if they managed it. The Delica has been welded up and had a bigger turbo fitted!

The Invacar came out to play, with no MOT due to OLD, the Fox had a Covid MOT but the Matiz remained off the road as I thought it might need work for the MOT. So the obvious thing to do was acquire a Yugo Sana.

 EfOfaOcWAAA_S0d.jpg

£500 paid, but that did include delivery from Derbyshire. It's going to be a big project - engine now turns but haven't got much further with it.

I genuinely thought that would be me done, but then Six Cyl offered me the Oltcit, and how do you decline something like that?

Ek3tgWKX0AMdkT7?format=jpg&name=small

Exactly. You don't. This is also a very big project, but I'm hoping to save it still. Will be a mahoosive one, but if HubNut exists for any purpose, then surely it's spending far too much on rare old cars worth tuppence ha'penny.

Meanwhile, the Vectra turned into a Rover 75.

EkwRSEkX0AAEUDN?format=jpg&name=large

And that should have been it, but wasn't quite as this £195 Daihatsu Charade popped up on Facebook marketplace and my girlfriend told me to buy it.

EnsSIFvWEAAlEv6?format=jpg&name=small

Bit smoky, bit crusty, but sound enough and a hoot to drive. 3000rpm at 70mph means it isn't a buzz box at speed, despite 989cc and three-cylinders.

I think that'll be it, but there are still a few weeks of 2020 left...

A lockdown project which fulfilled a long-hold desire to own one of BL's finest.  Off the road from 1992-2019, bought from the mechanic who'd revived it with an MOT and sold as running/driving, it was very solid underneath if somewhat scruffy, I've spent the last 6 months gradually making it a usable everyday car.  Still needs a bit of metalwork and it will never get restored under my ownership but it's now fairly reliable and slightly less tatty.

20201207_082754.thumb.jpg.d6aff76403c829b1ef1e22c4b3b1fefe.jpg

I've spent more on this thing than any previous car but hopefully I'll see at least the majority of it back, it'll likely be off in the spring as I'm moving house and won't have room for it.

In my search for a slightly larger camper, I ended up making a somewhat poor judgement call and buying this based on its remarkable condition.  The collection was combined with a work trip and for various reasons was enormously stressful.  It's amazingly tidy and solid, especially for a 17 year old Transit but had a pile of other issues the seller hadn't thought to mention to me - including broken door handles, malfunctioning dash, a very loud droning noise at speed, no V5, being a 4.2GWT and not being MOT'able in its current state - and which I'm nearly done sorting now.  It'll be superbly useful as a removals van, I'll throw a basic conversion in it and send it on, the mere sight of it raises my blood pressure.  It really is a good van, drive superbly and is very low mileage but it's too big.

I don't think I ever introduced this one, bought on 28th Dec last year.  I really wanted another Puma but this was a heap, the seller was economical with the truth to say the least and it had a ton of issues, not least the revoltingly filthy and mouldy interior, the missing Millennium edition seats and the galloping rot which eventually saw it sold off to a breakers in January.  Did drive pretty well though.

Sold to @Arthur Foxhake a few months back, I'd owned this since 2018, turned it into a basic camper and had some fun times but wanted something taller (see above) with a manual box.

My daily since Feb 2019 and not going anywhere soon, quite brilliant and in amazing condition seeing as it went over 200k miles last month.  Has cost a bit recently with a new clutch and suspension bushes plus a few other niggles have crept in of late but it's wearing its mileage very well and continues to do pretty much everything I could ask of a car.

This has been sitting in my garage since late 2019 and I finally passed my MOD2 a couple of months back so am finally starting to put some miles on it.  36k miles and in superb condition, I have very little to compare it against but it's nice to ride and I've no plans to get rid of it, certainly not until I've had plenty of use out of it.

Love the Princess

I have been tempted with an Octavia VRS Mk1 myself,  they do seem to be attracting the "future classic, mate" sellers now so might be a good time before all the good reasonably priced ones are gone

Definitely recommended if you can find one that hasn't been mistreated.  It replaced my Focus ST170 and there's no comparison, the Skoda's superior in every way.  I'm no VAG fanboy but this really is a marvellous all-rounder, it's my second Mk1 Octavia as I ran a silver 1.9TD I bought off here for a couple of years as a work hack back in 2016 - that was on similar mileage and was a brilliant "an car" if somewhat easy to lose in car parks.
