Started the year with a broken VW camper and a 205 diesel 'daily'

Fixed the VW on the last possible day that it could remain on the drive of my old house, passed its MOT ran badly for a month or so and has been considered a none runner since the last repair attempt in June.

Remembered that I still owned the Megane sport when the DVLA started nagging so gave it to a mate who rolled it.

Acquired the BX after the ms's friend listed it on freecycle for her neighbour

Gave the 205 away on freecycle although for the stress involved it would have been easier to weigh it in. Wouldn't have felt right though as we got it on freecycle in the first place.

Arrived in 2010 with the escRot.

Mid-Jan, I bought the 320iA touring for £600 to use as a daily taking the pressure off the escort and it proved to be invaluable in May when I found myself suddenly single and homeless. No need to rent a van to move, and I towed escRot with it 8)

I used the BM alot of the year, it took me all over the country pretty reliably (I did 1500ish miles in August) but it was damn thirsty and things started to break, so....

In September I bought the K10 for £350 - With a fresh MOT, recent service and only 70k on the clock. Mmm, frugal.

In November I sold the E30 for £300 (with a multitude of issues - dodgy electrics, knackered exhaust, 3days MOT, only running on 5 because of another broken rocker and it resolutely refusing to hold charge)

Leaving me with just the K10 and escRot to see the year out.

Not sure how much Ive actually spent though. Lets call it about even....:lol:

2010 has been a busy car year for me.

January: 1999 (T) SEAT Ibiza 1.4 S that I owned since 2002 with a lowly 54k miles finally got taken away and written off after crashing it in last year's snow. RIP. Worth about a grand but the insurance company decided to pay me £1700, which was a good result.

April: Car-less for a few months due to unemployment. Figured that I would need personal transport again in order to get to work so bought a 1994 (M) Ford Escort 1.8 LD from a friend of my dad's so I scraped together £250 to buy the car, plus £112.50 for 6 months tax. Only bought some diesel engine oil but other than some cleaning accessories and the actual diesel to make it go, spent £0 on repairing it. Rather quite good for a dog of a car with a damp boot and a mushroom sprouting from the carpet. Did about 2000 miles in it in 5 months.

September: Having sold my flat and gone into rented, could finally afford a half-decent car. Bought the 'birthday present' Nissan Almera 2.2 dCi for £3750 + traded in the Escort for it (so £249 for the Escort). Only done 850 miles in it so far.

The LT got fixed and taxed, Fred's dorma went to be a star on "This is England '86" the scorpio broke down... Prefect and consul classic sold on, granada mk3 chopped up for scrap. I have also aquired a ginetta kit car (dormant...) and a sierra sapphire (on the road) but tbh, not that much has changed. Oh, I also have a mk3 escort and a Volvo 240, both Fred's.......

Aha, thanks guys. I think I've seen pics of this somewhere before. I look at it this way: I don't know what condition the car was in when you started. If it was horrible, then well done, you've salvaged something from it and may it serve you well. If it was a nice one, the boys will be round to talk to you. Naturally I thought Farina, being involved with one myself. I'm not a purist, it's getting refined and upgraded... :D You would be welcomed at www.a40farinaclub.co.uk which is a pretty inclusive sort of place, but it is rather full of sharp Italian suits... 8)

Swmbos Ka - disposed of to webuyanychod to save the waking dead wasting your time. Splendid! Sold £915

Started the year with a 1987 VW Polo which was faultless, I put plugs, leads, a rocker gasket and an oil change on it in 6 months. A brilliantly reliable car which I sold to Torsten. Everything went wrong from that second, which is a complete mystery and something I feel terrible about.

Bought for £210, spent about £35 in 6 months and sold for £200

The 1958 Peerless had to go due to threats of redundancy, I R GUTTED

Bought for £xxxx, spent about 3 lifetimes and sold for £xxxx + about £2

Got a 1987 Ginetta G26 which was fantastic fun but needed a lot of maintenance to make up for previous years of neglect. Still a great car and I think I'd have another..

Bought for £350, spent about £300 on parts but loads of time, sold for £1000

Now with a 1988 Volvo 740 wagon, as the price of old Land Rovers has gone skyward for some reason.

Bought for £400, so far it's cost a set of plugs, leads and wiper blades

1982 Dyane: 1/1/10 - in garage; 1/1/11 - still in garage. Mileage this year = 0; spent £0; twinpot mojo = 0 :( New Year's resolution for 2011 = obvious 8)

2003 Blingo futureshite: mileage = lots, including northern Europe as far as Berlin; spent more than usual (replaced front springs, discs, two tyres, windscreen) to keep it in VGC.

Start with the C1 Lancers

still have the gold 1988 - apart from an oil change / basic service. Have done nowt to that since purchase. So apart from MOT / insurance etc .. fine by me. Does need a couple of tyres very soon but have some in stock

The White 1986 Lancer was bought for £225 with full ticket, 6 months tax and again spent nowt on it - just run it (did an oil change) one by be sold in the summer though as need to take stock..

Bought a white 1987 Lancer for 48 cans of Stella drove it back from down sarth. Thats now broken for bits and with fuel expense / and scrap value when broken up - i'm down by about £20

The Capri - not touched - stil sat in garage

Talbot camper - not touched, in storage (taxed and tested still though) did fit a tow bar start of year that was not cheap !!! other than that just an oil and water change

Fiesta XR2 - not touched

Fiesta pop - bought some sills for £15 (need some wheel archs still) that will need some money for 2011 (lads first car)

Tigra - Spent nowt apart from wipers and an oil change. Some one ran into it start of year but received a cash payout for £700. Did a goovy job on a mates car (mates rates) and he bought my paint for the Tigra so a couple of weekends work with hammer / dolly and a spray gun and no money spent. I'm up by £700 so think that will do for 2010

A quiet year for me:

1998 Rover 200 1.4: Sold £495

1991 Rover 216 SLi avec plus de camshaft: Bought £100 Jan / Feb, Spent £160 on fuel tank (fitted), £100 MOT inc test, ARB link arm and CV boot. Dec 2010: Given to a mate on long term loan.

1981 Austin-Morris Princess: Bought £200 December 2010, spent £120 transport from Bournemouth.

Started year with the Mondeo, with a 3-week old MOT and dubious front suspension. Hence the £60 shelled on two 2nd hand front tyres. Nothing else spent on it (I think...) other than tax, petrol, and insurance. It needs a fair bit of work, tho' : front suspension needs completely overhauled, new exhaust, and a porous inner rear wheelarch seeing to. And maybe the alloys reconditioning if I can spare the cash.

Acquired Renner in June for £324 (down from the overly optimistic £550 asked). Immediately needed ABS reluctor ring replaced, but I knew about that. Even the roughly £200 spent still brought us out ahead. She'll need front tyres and brake discs very soon, but that's not too harsh for one of these, so no worries. I just worry what the winter chaos has done to her hull...

Neither of the bikes turned a wheel, nor are they likely to in the near future.

It's just as well I don't have a garage, or even a drive to work on; it could be soooo much worse!

How much do old coaches/buses go for? Its something i've perved over for a while and even the wife quite fancies one! Id imagine a Leyland National coach would be one of the shitest/cheap ones you could get. Wouldn't mind a double decker, actually.

Basically depends on what you're after! The price of scrap is pushing prices up, but a general rule of thumb is around £750-1000 for something elderly, full size and needing some work, with decent MOT'd machines starting around the £1000 mark. One thing which does sometimes occur is with bigger operators anyway is that the tyres are leased, so purchasing a set can add about £600 on top of the purchase price. My Nationals were £825 (SHH 389X, the yellow one) and £1000 (PIL 7013, the red & cream one) but they seemed to be very much the exception rather than the rule; 389X needed an headlight and brake adjustment for MOT, PIL's got a burst downpipe and a slight power steering leak needing attention before it goes in for test in a month or so (hopefully!). Plus points are that insurance and road tax are cheap, bad points are - as always - cost of tyres, some systems are slightly more complicated, finding somewhere to keep it and fuel consumption, though something like a Mercedes minibus should still do about 25-30mpg and the smaller ones will fit - just - in a standard car parking space. Double deckers like Bristol VRs, MCW Metrobuses and Leyland Olympians are normally around the £1500-3000 mark depending on what's been done/needing done and you can pick up an early-mid 80s Volvo B10M or Leyland Tiger coach for about the same with a test...

Avoid Metrobuses and East Lancashire bodies if you don't like welding....

Personally, I'd go for anything that takes your fancy but beware; if you think cars eat money, they 'ain't nothing compared to restoring/keeping buses. I'd frighten myself (and probably bought a house, at the time, with) the money I spent on mine when I had them.

Gah! I can't believe you bought 'my' National 2 for half the price of my Landy! Mind you, my wife actually agreed to the Land Rover purchase. She gets very unamused whenever I contemplate owning a bus. Not sure one would fit down our track annoyingly (though there is someone not far away with a Bedford OB coach on his driveway - nice work!)

Theres a scrapyard in Stafford that regularly has "modern" buses driven over the weighbridge, they are then ripped to pieces with mechanical grabs until there's nothing left, glass, seats, the lot! Are there many of those MCW double decker things still knocking about? West Midlands Travel retired the last of them a couple of years ago- there was a rumour that the gave a few away because there is so much fibreglass inside them its uneconomic to sell them to scrap dealers. (not sure how true that is) I'd drive to work in one of those, just to piss everyone off.

WMT (or TWM after an expensive rebrand) only killed off the Metrobus THIS year! (half an hour left...) Even then, they've retained some for training. Birmingham's routemaster in some ways. Well, I think so...

'89 530i, owned 7 years. Did about 2000 miles this year, needed nothing, sailed thru t'test, been stored since.

96 318Ti. 2 years with me. Added fuel, washed it 5 times, taxed it in January, bought some new Michelins on rimz via the bay, 60 quid. MOT due Feb.

Total spent this year for around 15'0000 miles= Maybe 150 quid excluding tax/insurance and gas.
