Thought I had a quiet year ... .perhaps not - benefits for keeping a tat thread is that I can see what I have done this year. I wont be adding up any cost because of course all of it is cost neutral*

Better with photos right?

Okay so:

31941799441_3cc50f76ce_b.jpgBX. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

Sadly sold after a major FTP, coupled with some impressively determined rusting. Still one of the most fun cars I've ever had, just quite unrefined and incredibly smokey when cold.

33102623445_f1015dfe7a_b.jpgMy 1995 Renault 19 RT. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

Bought for a bargain £200 on gumtree, this 19 was a lovely drive and had a really nice interior. Unfortunately my misguided BX lust made me sell it...

33665887601_b78925aeb9_b.jpgMy 1989 Peugeot 205 GR. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

Had wanted to try out a 205 for ages and finally did, it ran alright but the seats were crap and it hurt to drive it for long distances, so off it went.

33505800790_9aa9d9b513_b.jpgMy 1993 Citroen BX19 TXD Estate. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

A seriously impulsive auto trader purchase, it was battered all over and needed new rear arms. I had planned on getting it all nice but it then decided to fail an MOT pretty impressively and my mojo was killed. Shame, but it was part ex'd for something I still have so there we go.

33391567343_e2af4e85b4_b.jpgMy 1995 Citroen AX Dimension. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

This was a real eye opener. I had my doubts about a 4 speed 650kg car after the 205 disappointment but I just couldn't stop looking at AXs. I think this one set me back around £170? Old couple in Brixton used to tow it behind a campervan. Sold as I wanted something with a touch more go.

33826428753_01003cf8e0_b.jpgMy 1995 Peugeot 405 GLX. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

I had also wanted a 405 for a long while, I'd set out to get a diesel but ended with a 1.8 petrol. It drove well, had had the same owner since the mid 90s, who was in tears as it went. Ultimately I had to sell it due to another car coming in.

35139368885_2d8f03c58c_b.jpgMy 1992 Citroen ZX Aura TD. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

This was a bit of a fun one. Utterly ruined with rust and years of dodgy MOTs and attempted thefts, it still ran well (despite dripping oil for fun) and was pretty quick when booted. Ended up being bailed when I sold it on here.

35528035620_b3fecb0156_b.jpgXantias. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

The worst car I have ever owned or driven. I had seen it on the FCF, had again always wanted a Xantia and thought an early diesel would tick the boxes. It was nice to drive, yes, when it actually worked. The seller said it had a hot start issue, then suddenly told me it had a starting issue all the time. By this point we had travelled all the way to Manchester, and I really didn't want to get the train back. Battery light was on constantly, alarm always went off, the interior was falling to pieces. I scrapped it after 7 days.

35784228021_403992134d_b.jpg1997 Citroen Xantia TD Temptation. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

This was much better. Slow mind you, but nice to drive and the handling was second to none. It did FTP on me once though, a snapped throttle cable going onto the M4! Now down in Brighton.

36716733655_9ed2b71f0f_b.jpg1995 Citroen AX Forte. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

I was responsible for bringing this car to the forum. Had been owned by a little old lady who passed away, went all the way to Essex for it. Drove great and was really fun but small cars on a daily commute got tiring.

36190189474_bd2ee83d0e_b.jpg1995 Peugeot 405 Executive Automatic. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

I wasn't quite done with 405s so I impulsively bought this one from a slightly bent trader down in Poole, who insisted everything worked. Yeah right. Still, it drove amazingly and was potent enough with the 2.0 engine. Automatics are novel but the fuel economy (or lack of) put me off.

36746812994_a64ac79090_b.jpg1993 Citroen ZX Avantage. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

This was meant to be the car I kept for ages. I really liked it to begin with but then the meh acceleration, heavy clutch and really crap seats did me in. Probably not my last ZX but I can't see myself having another soon.

37282451844_000688da54_b.jpg1994 Renault Safrane RN 2.2VI. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

Hmm, still sore about selling this one. Had been on ebay for AGES and I was chuffed to get it, it was probably one of the most comfortable cars I have been in, let alone drove. The handling was almost faultless, it just had a couple of seriously annoying niggles and the fuel economy was disastrous. I wouldn't turn down another, but it'd have to be a diesel.

Below are my current fleet, all new arrivals this year.

24546849958_67232dc448_b.jpg1997 Peugeot 406 LX 2.1 DT. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

Pricey(ish) to insure but lovely to drive and quick enough for modern traffic, it's just done nearly 1100 miles since Friday on one and a half tanks of diesel. Comfortable too. It has had a ton done to it recently, I just hope it doesn't decide to grenade itself this year.

37469644236_dee77b037c_b.jpg1991 Fiat Tipo DGT. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

I kept this one secret for ages, and then did a (massively overhyped) reveal at the FOTU. It cost me a fair whack for it to get a fresh MOT last month but it was worth it, now down south in storage somewhere, at least until winter is over.

37469643326_74451d9c0e_b.jpg1991 Citroen AZ11 TZX. by Sam Osbon, on Flickr

I discovered AXs this year, and realised I actually prefer them to any other Citroen, so jumped at the chance to buy this one in summer. I had seen it on ebay and kept looking at it, offered the guy money and my crud BX estate and he agreed. Did a meet up at Toddington services (yuck) and a deal was struck. Drives so well, and everything feels nice and tight. Does have some slight rust coming through, but it's kept in the dry under a car port now, so shouldn't deteriorate.

I have bought too many cars this year.

Surprisingly, I have sold more that I have bought this year. Actually pretty quiet by my standards

Hopefully one more will go by the end of the year and I'll be down to a sensible number of cars. I've been hovering around the nine mark for a while now, which is just silly

Probably the first time that has happened for many years. However, with the Camry estate being resurrected after 3+ years off-road and the 1200 finally running sufficiently well that I took it as far as FOTU in the summer then it feels like I've got two new cars.

I started off 2017 with around 14 cars, 3 305's, a 309, 360, E28, two c15's, a 940, Camry, Ranger, Alto, Proton and a Sigma.

Here's some pics.

The 18 started off like that, then I removed the paint and painted it in it's original colour before selling it.

32228750731_2ca1a3b589_c.jpgDatsun Stanza by srblythe, on Flickr

I carried out a small bit of welding on the end of the sill/wheel arch which JohnK has informed was totally shit and it needed redone.

31800855153_aa4cb6d4b9_c.jpgDSC_0290 by srblythe, on Flickr

It wasn't very good so I removed the front seats and sold the rest.

Mrs Foad was given a v70xc for free from a mechanic at her work.

Seemed like a bit of a ballache to get on the road so sold it to a local Volvo enthusiast.

Mrs Foad got a new daily

32830746413_41b73b0cd2_c.jpgDSC_0595 by srblythe, on Flickr

Which I then swapped for a Lada Riva

33712454331_9cec993b2b_c.jpgLada Riva 1500 by srblythe, on Flickr

I sold the Lada a few months later.

I Part exchanged the Stanza with JohnK for a ropey old Carlton which ran like shit, barely made it home and cost me a fair bit to put right including having the carb stripped, cleaned and rebuilt. I also gave him a sum of money, I think around £150 for the privilege.

Most of my Carlton experience looked like this.

32937193306_9455f4185f_c.jpgDSC_0290 by srblythe, on Flickr

The final straw was the starter motor packing up at the supermarket and having to be bump started by the AA. I sold it soon after.

I bought a ZX Turbo-D for £100

32801790274_78e7e8cdbd_c.jpgDSC_0592 by srblythe, on Flickr

patched up both sills and got it through an mot.

I got a zx estate for £60

34374706934_82e981a57d_c.jpgDSC_0966 by srblythe, on Flickr

And sold both of the ZX's a few months later.

I swapped a set of wheels for a Rover 216 SLI

33053960704_34e42b4024_c.jpgDSC_0768 by srblythe, on Flickr

Which I regrettably sold a month or so later after having the head gasket and timing belt replaced.

I briefly owned a Transit Recovery truck, it was incredibly shit, slow and kept breaking so I sold it on at a loss.

 34658605386_6868bddfef_c.jpgDSC_0626 by srblythe, on Flickr

I bought a 306 turbo-d sedan for £80

34436996012_43c4954234_c.jpgDSC_0566 by srblythe, on Flickr

It was pretty knackered so I kept the engine and broke the rest.

34629687631_604d1842a0_c.jpgDSC_0480 by srblythe, on Flickr

Someone at work gave me a 6n Polo

34317062284_2f23d757dc_c.jpgDSC_0949 by srblythe, on Flickr

I sold the wheels and weighed the rest in.

My Ranger's head gasket blew and cracked the head so I bought a temporary replacement for £300

36225249392_9935af4092_c.jpgDSC_0587 by srblythe, on Flickr

Which I then swapped for knobvan

26644835259_68d9be2229_c.jpgDSC_0390 by srblythe, on Flickr

I bought a mk2 Polo

35655060735_88ce595e0e_c.jpgDSC_0539 by srblythe, on Flickr

And bought a mk2f to break for spares because I wanted a 5 speed gearbox for my mk2

37554978510_9ebbdb7093_c.jpgDSC_0119 by srblythe, on Flickr

A short time later I was offered a swap for another 360 GLT so swapped the car and most of the spares for the 360.

24189630608_67ce971aea_c.jpgDSC_0257 by srblythe, on Flickr

Another guy at work gave me another free car.

35959681064_b7fef81f09_c.jpgDSC_0059 by srblythe, on Flickr

I got it running and sold it to Rainagain's brother in law.

I bought a W123 for £350

36757487096_01f8c12e3a_c.jpgDSC_0963 by srblythe, on Flickr

spent weeks welding it and got it through an mot, I still have it.

Missing my Rover, I bought an autoshite bike 220

37114943642_04452be958_c.jpgDSC_0406 by srblythe, on Flickr

I did a bit of welding on it and used it for towing, it helped me acquire my Proton which I still have.

37300047880_bc9c3fae89_c.jpgDSC_0845 by srblythe, on Flickr

I didn't seem to be getting on with the Rover so put it back up for sale for what it owed me, JohnK agreed to buy it and sent me the £110, he then fucked me about and pretty much ignored all my messages until I put a post up about it, he PM'd me to say yes, he would come and get it but "there would be no pleasantries" because I had been "running my mouth" about the poor state of the Carlton that I had got from him, this is when he said my welding was shit and needed redone and he said "he didn't need a dickhead like me" in his life at the moment.

Anyway I had been advised my another member that it might be best to just give him his money back because I'd be lucky to avoid being punched in the face by John when he turned up to collect the car.

I decided the best thing was to give the car away to the first person who could come get it, a few people  inquired but Nisfan of this parish was first to collect, he is now using it daily so I think it's went to a good home.

I bought another car to tow with

24189636958_411c4641d7_c.jpgDSC_0242 by srblythe, on Flickr

A volvo 940 lpt manual which I didn't seem to be getting on with so sold it a month later.

With my Ranger's head gasket knackered I swapped it for an old Yamaha XT 350

37969274216_ab326d87f8_c.jpgDSC_0237 by srblythe, on Flickr

Which I sold for £600

I bought a 2.0 manual 190E for £200

24189635208_9dd475dc51_c.jpgDSC_0246 by srblythe, on Flickr

And recently sold it on to Derskine.

Having sold both my cars suitable for towing and getting rid of both pickups I bought an L200

37592751195_ba2ec4396d_c.jpgDSC_0417 by srblythe, on Flickr

Which doesn't actually have a tow bar yet...

I also bought a smol Fiat

37715801175_0ab12cc299_c.jpgDSC_0323 by srblythe, on Flickr

and sold it the next day because "Too Smol"

I sold some other cars in the list like the 309, both c15's, Proton, E28 and the Alto and I'm currently left with:

Peugeot 305 SRD

Peugeot 305 GLD (spares car)

Peugeot 305 Van

Volvo 360 GLT

Volvo 360 GLT

Mercedes 190E

Mercedes W123 230E

Proton Saga

Mitsubishi L200

Toyota Camry

I'm pretty sure that's it.

Bought from a dealer a couple of weeks ago as a bit of a project it needs a lot of tidying and fettling but came with a mahoosive service file from Hartech and expensive receipts for all important new sills. I can't say I have bonded with it as of yet.

  • 4 weeks later...

Still got:

35260731810_2c03df4eda_c.jpg

Owned 7 years and counting. Currently waiting for this to be installed:

32166699426_3049645ab8_b.jpg

That's all you get of the Jondeo, which is still here 2 and a half years after buying it as a temporary stopgap. Currently sporting 348000km and it looks like crap now.

35260793580_d0f611915e_c.jpg

Shameless library photo of this from a couple of years ago, when it looked good (it hides its rust well). Once the head work is sorted, it'll likely be leaving the fold next year.

30296161240_82667096f6_b.jpg

Owned this almost 7 years, too. Currently on loan to my retired aunt and uncle, visiting from Scotland. Doubt this will ever leave, since prices have risen, it costs so little to keep and we'd never find another for £950 again.

34838525833_efc9aa456f_c.jpg

Replacement daily for the 205 for Mrs_Jon. She loves it and declared that she'd like a Tesla as her next car, so we'll probably have this for years and years, then.

Might as well equal up the numbers of non-working cars with those that work.
