Some American spec SMs were exported to Japan when it became too hard to meet the American regulations.

Interesting as this is taken from a 1978 brochure, even though SM production ended in 1975. Presumably Citroen had a few US market models that never landed in the states, hence why they shipped what was lying around in American customs across the Pacific. They couldn't sell many in the states after changes to bumper safety regulations were put into action, and due to the differentiating ride height with the hydropneumatic suspension system (which the US regulators weren't fond of) Citroen found themselves in a sticky situation. I wonder if they managed to flog a few of the US-spec SMs to Canada? Maybe the Canadians adapted the same regulations as their American counterparts.
