I believe so, apparently they had a nasty habit of coming un hitched at 70Mph and hurtling down the motorway while the bus took the slip road off the motorway   the RMAs had bigger engines (11.3L AEC AV690 169Hp) with high speed diffs to allow for 70Mph motorway operation

when I was younger and before I had fucked up my back I used to ride on the heritage Routemasters all day long and then go back to Bow/west ham garage on them (I even had my own HiVis I would carry around in a bag)

 

part of the Garage trip involved some dual carriage way/motorway which was fun to experience especially sat right next to the platform, i would not want to fall off at those speeds (the extra fun part was when they went into a tunnel at speed combined with the patchy high pressure sodium lighting in the tunnel made for a fun experience)
