Gr8 photos. Yeah, a high number of Talbots there.

Funny thing is, as a kid I was obsessed with cars and knew all the makes and models but I don't recall seeing that many Alpines/Solaras around. They must've sold shedloads but they obviously were prime scrappie fodder or just had a shorter lifespan than Marinas/Allegros/Dolomites which I remember seeing all the time. :?

Weren't the press demo Tagoras SHP**W?

I did read somewhere (maybe here in the past) that a large amount of the Talbot Tagora's in the uk were 1st registered by the factory. They were a poor seller and were used as pool cars at the factory etc.

I often wonder about the fate of various press cars especially ones that were used in adverts and road tests. Shame to think if that Tag was a press car, that was the last photo of it :(

That blue P-reg Alpine is a very early one too. And appropriate reg number on the blue Allegro

Good lord - they can't have been that poorly spannered, surely!

I love seeing photos like this, thanks for linking them on here Trigger! I notice alot of Maestros, particularly the early ones. That Y reg one would have been 16 years old at the time, so it survived quite a while. Metros are to be expected, I cant actually remember seeing any Talbots on the road bar the Horizon.

Last couple of times I have been to scrapyards, I have seen alot of Omegas and E34s in them. Troopers as well, but very few Rovers.

I recall 1995-97 to be when most Talbots disappeared from the roads. The same thing will happen with the remaining MG-Rovers around 2015, I expect.

Too true :( Walked down a street the other day with a 75, 45 and two 200s close together, and realised that they're going to go from commonplace to unusual in the blink of an eye.

Great pictures :)

I was particularly into 80's cars at that time, mainly because they were becoming old bangers during that period.

I remember Talbots and Chryslers well. The last Talbot I ever recall seeing on the road was in 1997 in the school car park. It was a C-reg Solara, silver 2 tone so probably a Minx or something. By the time I left school in the summer it had big patches of primer on it.

I remember a good spot in 1996 was YMS 515R, an Alpine which was parked at th side of the road in Stirling, on the road leading towards the Wallace Monument. That lasted quite well! DVLA says no a few months later though.

I worked in the spares dept of a big breakers yard in 1997. Most cars coming in were mid eighties - Mark 4 Escorts were starting to creep in and parts were at a premium for those. Mark 2 Sierras were rare. Stuff like Mark 2 Golfs, early E30's and 190E Mercs were just not on the radar yet - 5/7 Series around W-X plate were arriving. 1987/88 Rover 800's were quite common for the '£40 and a taxi home' treatment but they were shit and always rusty - same with the boxy 213/216. Cortinas, Maxis, Princesses had already just about died out with just the occasional examples.

Talbot stuff was normally crushed straight away because they were useless breakers - never sold anything off them and every Talbot occupied a space where a Mark 3 Escort could be plonked. There were always 10+ cars a day coming in so you had to work out what needed cubing straight away, what would go into the yard for a month or two and what partly stripped victim it would replace. An armour plated Peugeot 604Ti with bulletproof glass was sadly crushed whole - it was a heavy bugger and was needed to make up the numbers that week.

The other thing is that back then, the yard was always busy. Now it's almost dead and a car can stay in there for up to a year.
