I always thought the Mk 2 Cavaliers handled like shit, but they didn't half fly, I used to work on a 1.3 saloon that belonged to an old boy that just flew, Insanely quick for a 1300cc saloon.

 

I saw an old boy last week in a B reg China blue 5 door, I got quite excited by it.

 

The later one where quite comfy as well if i remember correct, The GLSi's and CD's.

I love the Mk2 cavvy, its one of my faves too. Its a car that can do every day tasks such as shopping or trips to the tip, even a blat down the motorway with ease.

 

I have destroyed quite a few on the oval, nice strong cars. Not long ago you could pick up MOT failures for a few quid- they were everywhere. I found they handled well but suffered from a bit of torque steer.

 

I have seen the odd U.K based 2 door, but theyre about as unusual as 2 door MK5 Cortinas, but they are out there!

One of my Dads friends has a 1988 Commander hatchback in silver. I'm hoping he'll make his mind up soon about selling it to me. Commander!!! I have a soft spot for the mk3 saloons too, I think they're very tidy looking cars in basic spec - I'd like one in blue with steel wheels.

Funny really, because conversely I reckon we were slower to adopt the 5-door hatchback. I wonder if they'd have bothered making the Solara if it wasn't for the UK?

 

Something I've noticed is 3 door cars are far more popular in the UK than the rest of the world. For example the Fiesta and focus are only available in 5 door format here

We're a funny bunch like that. Three door cars are in fact the work of the devil, I can think of no upside to them at all. Yet the doors are too big to open properly in a carpark, and anyone needing to get in the back needs to be either a a child, or child-sized.

 

Some people seem to think they're "sportier" - I can sort of see their point on a hot hatch, maybe, if I squint. But on a regular family runaround? I've got a 5-door GTI, it goes just as fast as a 3-door so is no less sporty.

 

We also don't get anywhere near as many saloon variants as other countries.

I like some two/three door cars (Capris and Calibras for example) but they are a 'mare when you have kids. It's not so much the big doors but the faffing about getting people in/out is a pain.

 

I'd also suggest that quite often the two/three door models of cars look loads better than the four or five door variants, the E36 BMW being a case in point.

I much prefer 3 door format, the bigger doors mean you can rest your arm on them properly. Sounds stupid but my 120y had doors so small you had to move you arm forward to put it out the window. Plus I don't carry passengers much or care about how much room they have since I'll never travel in the back of my own car. Finally they normally look better. So I'd pick the 2/3 if I have the choice

Dude, honestly I think that looks awesome. And I'm not just typing that to kiss Hirst's ass neither. Soz for piccy re-post but that car deserves it.

 

edit: Granted I'd like it sitting a little bit lower and without the chin spoiler.

I'll admit, I prefer Sierras, but I have recently warmed very much to Cavaliers exactly like the one in the first post. They were miserly though. My uncle had an L-spec saloon, A314SPS in about 1990, in that light blue colour. The interior was the same colour and was very cold and austere - looking. The front seats always seemed to look bolt upright no matter how you adjusted them. He bought a Sierra Sapphire LX after that and it was a world apart.

 

However, my dad had a Sapphire Blue D-reg GL Estate, which was of the first facelift type. It was altogether better equipped, with full wheel covers, metallic paint, radio cassette and it was the first car he owned that was fitted with power steering. I cant remember the seats, but I know they were far less grim.

 

This is my friend's MK2 Cav SR. Its a Y reg so doesnt have fuel injection.

He's currently re-comissioning it, but boshed some trade plates on it so he could get it onto the Club stand at a recent show we were all at.

 

Its nicely specced with Recaro seats trimmed in that kind of 'tartan' fabric, and it has a slight blow in the exhaust so sounds particularly 'Cavaliery', if you know what I mean.

 

This was also on our stand, but has been 'redtopped'

I absolutaly LOVE Mk2 Cavs. My dad had one when I was a kid and its one of those car on the list of must own cars

 

Though for me to have one it would have to be the lesser spotted early mk2 pov-spec.

The above model is similar to my Dads old A-reg example, apart from his being a hatch.

 

Not driven a mk2 myself, certainly not bee in one since around the late 90s.

 

There are still lots of modded mk2s about but not many pov-specs, there is a B-reg example not far from me. Will have to try and get a better pic.

 

I do also like the mk3s but only the early examples with the grey grills and rounder steering centres. Again, not many of them seem to be about, most mk3s still around are late models.

My next-door neighbour had a Mk2 Cav, 1.6L Dizzler-spec in dishwater green - A477 ERT. From memory it used to smoke like a bugger every morning on start-up.

 

College teacher had a 1.6L petrol - E748 VCL, he donated it to the college and we then abused it until it refused to start ever again and was hiab'ed away.

 

Oh, Don Brennan from Corrie had a Mk2 Cav taxi didn't he? Until he fucked the thing over and buggered his leg up.

Nearly bought that red one (CFJ 42Y) earlier in the year, but something didn't quite ring true at the time. I've regretted it since...

 

Anyway, my mate's dad had two - F406 FUS was a grey 1600 saloon, 5-speed box, nice late model disc wheel trims, smoked tail lights... probably my favourite spec, actually. The other was an early one, seem to recall it was RRO ...W registered, a industrial blue 1300 hatch. The silver one was stolen no less than six times from what I recall.

 

The last early one I saw up here was EUS 468 or 486X, a bright orange 1300 saloon with orange interior. It was some awesomely horrorsome I'd have ordered at least six.

 

I went looking for a Mk2 and came back with my haze blue '89 Mk3 SRi, much to my own disappointment. The early Mk3s suffered the same issues as every Mk2, largely rot around the rear chassis which generally was too far gone to be worth sorting most of time... shame, they really are rather nice machines!

I don't know exactly why but something looks wrong with that. The grille looks out of place and the front bumper looks like a facelift model version. It's possibly a cross-over from old style to facelift but I've not seen one before.

 

One of my favourite cars I've owned was a Mk2 facelift 1.8SRi saloon. Handling, especially in the wet, was shocking but it didn't half go some and was indestructable.

 

I do like the Mk3s though, probably more than the Mk2 as they felt better built (even if they weren't!) and the 2.0 130 engined SRi Mk3 like your's CMS are brilliant.

This is from an episode of A Touch Of Frost, isn't it? He takes his subordinate's car to go after a crim, and then hoys it down a grass bank and nearly goes into the river.

 

From memory it looks like the stunt driver ragged the thing to pieces from cold.

I have never had any luck spotting these cars. I saw a greeny blue facelift model on the roundabout in Basingstoke heading to the M3 last year, and a prefacelift lowly spec one passed us near Odiham a few weeks later, but thats largely it. There is a red Estate one near Blackwater which is used as a daily, and there is (or was) a Polish registered one in Ash Vale. Behold:

I love how this picture has absolutely nothing telling you it was taken in the UK.

But thats it. Four, in a year. Ive seen more MKIs in that time.

The "Touch of Frost" Cavalier is either:

1) an "early-spec" car on D-reg plates, or

2) a D-reg car with early spec grille, lights and bumpers.

The early-spec 81-84 cars had the tight slatted grille and brake master cylinder on the left of the bulkhead, mid-spec (84-86) had the master cylinder on the right and chip-cutter grille. Late spec had wide slatted grille, snow-plough front spoiler and the clear indicators.

Reading this thread made me realise that I have been admiring Mk2 Cavs for a long while and not feeling ashamed :lol::lol:

 

It also triggered some underlying memory that my Aunt had a Mk2 Cav in the mid eighties. I don't know much about it, other than it would have been bought by my Uncle and it replaced an Mk1 Astra shape Opel Kadett (as kids we called it the Opel Fruit :roll::lol: )

 

My Uncle died though in early 1986, so that summer when we went on holiday to relatives in Bournemouth my Aunt came with us, as a bit of recuperation. It was the memory of the looking in the mirror for her in the Cav (that I was tasked with by my Dad) on the way down, that resurfaced because of all this Cav talk. :D:D

 

It was a red 5 door hatch, that's all I remember. She traded it for a brand new D reg Escort not long after the holiday. Probably due to the change in relationship situation....

 

I also remember the late Mamma Vin, getting a Mk2 Cav SRI as a courtesy car when she had some work done on her Panda.

 

She had it for the weekend and I had a go in it. It was GR9 8)8)

 

Was about 1997 and it was a white 5 door hatch, E*** OTL, with a 'MENRICK' (old Scunny Vauxhall dealer) sticker in the back. It became Stoneacre.
