My Saab 900 would’ve cost £24495 new in 1996. I paid £300 for it. So it lost 98.8% of its value from new...

If you adjust for today’s money out would’ve been around £42,500 so would’ve lost 99.4% of its  value!!

Missed the crucial piece of information there, didn't I?!!! ?

Here’s the converted version:

Purchased by me for $3,500 (£1,925)

Sold new for $80,000 (£44,000)

Adjusted for inflation to $234,800 (£129,180)

That’s a depreciation figure of 98.5%

June 1998 - £20,470

March 2017 - £100

Depreciation - 99.5%

We were on about that car yesterday when we were out in the mx-5. My partner had a 306 new years ago and she was looking forward to getting this. She was very dissapointed and said it drove nothing like her old one.

I thought it was okay. Nothing to write home about, but okay.

Trying to relive her youth I suspect. A bit like playing C64 games now. Amazing at the time but now completely shit.

Fun game!  As far as I can tell, my big liability Audi A8 cost somebody's offshore account 50k back in 2003... If we're adjusting for inflation, that's 79 big ones!  The £1500 smackers I paid is about 1.88% of that, a mere 13 years (and 130,000 miles) later!  Must have been nice new though...

Is there a quicker way to lose money?!

Unsure why I didn’t post this sooner in this thread. But my N reg (1994?) A8 had a £55k price tag in 94 (many options ticked). I bought it for £600 in 2012 ish….. kept it for 6 months and flogged it for £730. Best £600 I ever spent on a car…… 4.2 v8 of pure pleasure.

edit 99.04%

I paid £3850 for a new 1.1L Fiesta in 1982, so given high inflation in 79-81, I would reckon a1.3 Ghia in 1980 would be similar.

Back in 1986 a young W.T.C was sitting through a maths lesson when Sweaty Seymour, the teacher, was explaining depreciation to the class stating that depreciation is the % lost against purchace price. My reply of stating that a new Range Rover that cost £2000 back in 1970 is still worth £2000 in 1986 therefore the owner could, by his theory, swap it for a new one didn't make him happy.

My mother has a Jimny. Paid £14k in 2013, worth the same now.
