I think these finished in 1971, so perhaps this was exported from new and brought back to the UK in ‘76?

indeed its an import, and before A Prefix (August 1983), Imported vehicles generally got assigned a registration number based on their date of first registration rather then year of manufacturer

which means you got some fun late registration madness

like this  1954 Volvo on an R Suffix for example :)

Ireland cannot be trusted.

Ulsterbus had a few second hand Van Hool bodied Leyland Tigers from Shearings. On disposal, these by and large lost their cherished plates. A167 MNE had been OXI 525, and was sold back to the UK where it became W386 HKL. It ended up back in Ireland, albeit the republic, as 00-KE-13862.

One time Leicester Tiger/Paramount A21 GBC (from memory) ended up on a 98-plate, and a couple of ex Army Derwent Tigers ended up on 97 and 98 plates. Another Derwent Tiger I can think of is a 1987 example now registered CU51 UCL.

Plenty ex Ministry Dennis Javelins ended up on 14-plates, despite being 2002 models with Plaxton Prima bodies.

Another which did the hope back and forth over the Irish Sea was one time Parks Plaxton Supreme Volvo B58 GGD 668T which looked very weird as G421 HCW.

It was standard practice once upon a time for imports to be given the next available number, i.e if a 1975 car was imported in 1978...suddenly you had a 1978 car! After 1987 (IIRC) this changed but a few have slipped through the net as "clerical errors" etc.

Saw this on facebook marketplace, I believe that the last ones were on a 99T.

Year of manufacture is 1999 on DVLA, but first registration 2002. It's probably an import.
I've never seen one that colour either.

Hi

This is my old van! I sold it in 2016, amazed it’s still about. I bought it in Poland in around 2005, it was then fishmongers van so stank. I gutted it all out in Poland and fitted it as a camper, travelled all over in it. Had a reconditioned engine fitted there as well and bought it back to the UK in around 2007, then registered it here. Got that number plate which I always though was pretty cool, almost spelt KEEP.

looks a bit of a mess at the moment but would love to track it down.

Just spotted this Fiat / Autobianchi Giardinera on a 1987 D Reg, how? I know Autobianchi took over from Fiat until 1977 but is there something I didn’t know? Surely after 1983 / Y Reg it would’ve got an age related number?

Bonus points for being an Essex mark!

but its on a D prefix plate because as far as the DVLA is concerned it IS from 1987 :)

image.thumb.png.1018057d890cb75abce430ada015929a.png

clearly an import and the DVLA read whatever foreign equivalent of the V5 they got handed in, as the vehicle being from 1987

a bit like that 52 plate 1970's BMW thats a few pages back

(when you import and register a vehicle in the UK, you have to prove its age somehow, and you either do this by handing in the forign equivlent of a V5 or get a dating letter if you dont want to/cant do the former)

although if you look at its DVSA record (the MOT checker) it comes back as being first registered on the 7th of July 1967, so I wonder if someone at the DVLA read 6 as 8 or such

and I wonder if it has been corrected in some capacity but the DVLA record has not publicly been updated or such

normally (sadly?) cockups like this get corrected, if nothing else because people are gonna want that sweet Free tax and MOT exemption

so its interesting to see this one is still as it is :)

Snap!

D660 UGT - 1967 Fiat 500 Giardiniera

When it comes to Fiats, seems someone at the DVLA can't tell a 6 from an 8.

Back "in the day" i remember a couple of G reg MK2 XR2's that were about, just as I remember seeing photographs of a B plate Mk1 Fiesta.

As an XR2 owner (multiple times) back then the G plates were like the holy grail, not seen one for many many years

Here's a better pic from years ago of G747EUK - a Turbo Technics converted one none the less!!!

I reckon a lot more mk2 Fiestas were registered on the G than legend would have it, even though production ceased months earlier. The story I heard was that a big chunk of the last few thousand cars off the line were destined for use as summer rental cars in the Channel Islands ( as in previous years ) but the plan changed in order to get a load of early mk3s into the secondhand marketplace as quick as possible, so some of those mk2s came back to the U.K. mainland unregistered, or never went in the first place.

The mk3 was seen as a big step forward at the time, so discounts for private buyers on the unsold mk2 stock were probably quite significant. I remember Ford advertising money off on national TV after the mk3 had been launched, no doubt a bunch of buyers hung on in order to get the new year letter that August.

Registered August 83, though sales stopped in 1980 or 1981. The seller claims it's a 1975 model, which it definitely isn't - but it does seem like it hung around unsold for a couple of years.

Six of the nine counties of Ulster ARE in the United Kingdom. A167 MNE and OXI 525 are legitimate United Kingdom registrations. It sounds like it remained in the UK (rather than being "sold back to the UK" until being exported to the Republic of Ireland and becoming 00-KE-13862.

My apologies, I did of course mean the mainland.

At the time DVLA ans DVLNI records I suspect were still different things; certainly it returned to England as OXI 525 and became W386 HKL shortly thereafter, before heading to ROI.

IIRC weren't there loads of unregistered Mk4 Escorts on the system in 1990 at the launch of the Mk5 so quite a few Mk4s were registered in 1991 on H plates, not sure if any got J plates
