Certainly I remember a lot of Mk4s on H plates, at one time I used to note which regs there was a change of model, sometimes a spring launch would lead to an uneven overlap.

B reg Mk3 Granadas were always rare to spot, same with R reg Mk4 Astras,

Spotted on Marketplace - imported mk1 MX5 on a T. Looks like an early car so I guess it was imported in 1998 and got a T plate because it was current?
The mk1 was only available up to P/R at the latest, and those are uncommon.

as I suspect this was computerised in 1979 under its original  plate and at some point then robbed of its plate and give a T suffix according to its computerisation date as its date of original registration was not recorded

(although I have not verified this as the only tool I have currently that spits out previous registration marks is my paid for tool and thats low on credit which im still trying to stretch LOL)

 

I know a Routemaster, RM23 ended up similarly on a T suffix plate LGH31T because of that for a period, sadly I have not been able to find any photos of it wearing that plate as it after a couple years someone requested an age related plate for it and it was then given the age related plate JFO256

I wonder if @Yoss or @busmansholiday might know of any pics from when it was LGH31T? because a Routemaster on a T suffix plate sounds all sorts of fun/wrong :)

Well I never knew that! My 1985 London bus handbook shows it still as VLT 23. It also has a yellow highlighter through it which means that I have travelled on it, though to find out where or on what route would mean trawling through a lot of my records. 

My 2000 Routemaster handbook has it already as JFO 256 and in storage with a company called London Bus Services Ltd. 

 

And my 2017 RM handbook has this!

So it's registration is the least of its worries. This picture was taken in Novosibirsk which is seriously far east in deepest Siberia, just above Mongolia. I would love to know if it drove there. It has a Cummins engine now so there's no reason why not.

This Dart has a Routemaster registration, which was on a Hyundai i10 when I last checked.

History:

VLT240 Dennis Dart DT32 - Hyundai I10 2011 (G32 TGW)

DT28-41, with Carlyle bodies, went to Selkent's low-cost unit at Orpington, to operate Roundabout routes R1 and R11. These wore Roundabout livery: red with grey skirt, but with the white tape at cant-rail level and prominent Roundabout fleetnames. They were for routes R1 and R11, where they took over from Metroriders.

Or was there something that said you can't have plates that look newer than the car? 

As far as my quattro lore goes, I think the last ones were delivered in 91, and the last sold in 94 I think?

Shouldn't be possible to put a later plate on an older car but mistakes do happen. My 52 plate car ended up with an 03 after a plate change and a new plate being assigned. 

 

Used to be common that imports would end up with a plate reflecting the date of import rather than date of build

Yes, I was thinking of a Sierra-based kit mainly. Sebring was the first that came to mind but as you say, so many kit cars of various types ended up with an identity from a Sierra

that practice stopped August 1st 1983 for the most part but indeed before that imports would be given a plate according to first registration in the UK

although after that date you can still get get the odd case that when such an imported vehicle or say re-registered old vehicle, that is then robbed of its original plate will then accidentally be given a plate based on first registration with the DVLA rather then its year of manufacture as it should be given

see B150SDC ex DWP40 as an example up this thread :)

Agreed on all, but I've still seen it happen surprisingly many times more recently. Admittedly sometimes the circumstances are a little different than simply getting a plate for date of import. 

 

I agree that the Audi looks like it was registered on an R. Always interesting to see that happen. 

 

In the case of my car, it was first used in October 2002 on Danish export plates. Brought to the UK and used on them until June 2003 where it was registered for the first time, given a 52 Brighton plate. 

 

Later, after a private plate was removed, it was assigned a new 03 to reflect June 2003 (presumably the original 52 Brighton plate had disappeared or ended up on something else)

I reckon that Audi was bought as an investment and stored away unused and unregistered for a few years. That often happens when a desirable car goes out of production and investors snap up the last ones hoping to make a mint - witness the numerous late reg madness MGBs that have graced this thread over the years as an example.

Pinched from Facebook :) (I know not technically late registration madness since they are still made, but its still amusing to see a 71 plate on what is a 1970's car, one of the few vintage cars left still in production)

its nice to see that the guy who suddenly decided to start importing them is actually selling some! (this is the first one since that venture I have seen outside of the 21 plate Demonstrator thats well known)

 If I had the means id love to get one :) (https://lada4x4.co.uk/ id get a base with steel wheels, although probably see if I could spec Air conditioning because im soft like that)
