Late registration madness

OMGMGB late registration madness. DVLA says it was made in 1980 and registered September 83 so probably one of those that were bought and stored as investments when BL announced production was going to stop. Looks odd with a prefix reg.

Carried on until 2009, very limited range (1.1, 1.4, 1.4 HDi) after the 207 was launched in 2006.

Also - one of few cars that managed to outlast its successor. They're still produced today in Iran. I think the Volvo 240 is another example that was manufactured after its successor (I'd argue the 740) was withdrawn from production, and the original Mini outlasted the Metro/100. Am sure there's a new thread opportunity emerging here...

IIRC in 1990 Ford still had field fulls of the old Mk4 Escort when the Mk5 came out, consequently at one time it was common to see 1991H reg Mk4s. I wonder if any Mk4s got J or K plates

I don't remember seeing any cars but I think I saw a J reg van.

The Metros had a big overlap with the newer ones being launched on a G reg, but plenty of older ones were registered on an H reg, & the vans on a J.

It's a rally car. All sorts of weird shenanigans go on with them to do with FIA logbooks, homologation and shit.

Nearly all rally cars with missing details/strange provenance went on Qs, hence why a lot of the homologated cars at the time (205s, Sierras, Escort Cossies) were running them, would have expected the same in this case. sheffcortinacentre is probably right, perhaps something to do with a RWD swapped MK3/4.

I was looking up a the partial registration of a Ford Sierra in a magazine by typing all the potential combinations into the Auto Trader checker.

All the cars that came up were Fords registered in May 1983, only one was a Sierra of the same trim level, but I was surprised to find one was a Cortina about 7 months after they were dropped from the range.  It was a 2 litre GL rather than a Crusader which would have been expected.

Also possible it was built from a kit of new bits, unused brand new shell, and registered on the current year letter assuming it complied with all the relevant regulations of the day whatever they were.

Strange how you see so few Q plates nowadays, there was always a stigma about them even in motorsport and I reckon most of them have been “legitimised” through a good old ringing process (particularly common on these old rear drive Escorts)

I heard that many insurance companies don't like dealing with them, and the DVLA won't let you transfer any other plates onto them.

I presume it's a lot easier to prove the age of a car these days, and kit cars tend to have the registration of their donor vehicle.

What do I win for this 1934 G-prefix Morris then?

G147BFC.jpg

DVLA says first registered in March 1990 so I guess it was a barn find with no ID and the work experience kid accidentally issued it with a current reg instead of an age-related one.

was idly going back through this thread, now that I have researched the ever loving crap out of the DVLA I was just curious to look back at this thread

checked this one out, it did actually its original registration, AP25, but it was sadly taken off the vehicle in 1992, and given a G prefix plate based on its date of first registration rather then year of manufacture, clearly must have been done by the same guy that went on to do the "age related" registration for B150SDC when that was robbed of its original plate DWP40 in 2013 LOL

I do love that G147BFC and B150SDC are still wearing their funky registrations, they could have easily requested an appropriate age related plate from the DVLA if they wanted to, but did not :)

(I do still wonder how private plates would work for such a vehicle, lets say you had the plate G1OLD you wanted to stick on that morris would the DVLA let you, or would it suddenly "snap" and lump you with an age related mark?)

Like some of these weird ones I have a Porsche Boxster S that was registered on a 52 plate but after several reg changes and having a new age-related plate issued, got an 03 plate which it still has

That is that it was first used in 2002 during the 52 plate range but first registered in 2003 during the 03 plate range. So I guess it just got issued on the date of first registration
