when i was in security the was one of these, we watched it rot away then it dissappeared and we assumed it was scrapped, then it reappeared all welded and painted... must of cost more than value of the car

Quite a subtle late registration, it's a Riley RME, confirmed by the engine size, registered 4 April 1956.

According to The Riley RM Club production of the RME ended in January 1955.

The MoT tester who dealt with my CX yesterday told me about his earlier life working for Perry's Ford when they had a dealership in Whetstone. A Mk.2 Escort was brought in, requiring some attention, and the plate it carried was a 1984 "B"-prefix. There was some head-scratching about this as the Mk.3s had been launched in 1980/81.

Story was that this 1.3L 4-door saloon had sat in a corner of the compound at Perry's, unwanted and unregistered for five years after it was built. When the car's owner, who worked for Perry's, found out and asked if he could buy it and register it even at this late stage, apparently it wasn't a problem!

I thought the Citroen GSA was replaced by the BX but here at the same show as A and B-reg BXs is a C-reg GSA. Built in Spain in July 1984 but not registered until September 1985, it was thought to be the last one registered but there are actually a handful of C-reg, all Cornflower Blue and built on the same day, a couple of which were registered several days after this one. Allegedly a couple of D-reg GSAs exist too, which must have hung around for ages.

Also, did anyone notice the P-prefix 2CV in dollywobbler's microcar rally video. I wonder what the story behind that is.

Basically the same story as the Opel Manta on a J-plate (latest were on a G).

That one's a fair bit later still. C409 PPJ = 11 Sep 1985, C722 BHA =  11 Feb 1986. That last batch of blue Spanish-built RHD cars certainly hung around for a long while.

Denems on a D plate ... who'd have thought? It took seven months and £700 off the initial price for the first one to sell. The second _could_ be as late as an E... Both estates in the Aberdeen area.

I didn't know that a Dacia "12" could command as much as three bags back then. Every day is a learning day.

This has cropped up a couple of times on eBay, I'm sure mainstream CJ 205's were phased out around K plate with the occasional L reg, this one on the other hand....

And second up on the French late plates, considering the phase 2 106 was introduced on an N plate, this little series one was apparently sat around until Jan 1998!

the 2 short registration numbers have defo been transferred 

but H844KFH shows up as a 1990 BMW, curiously on the MOT checker with a date of first registration as 31st Dec 1990, which makes me wonder if it was some sort of import

Last manta’s were on F plates. There’s never been a G. But there is one J plated manta somewhere. I think it’s being restored. I’ve never seen it and I’ve been round manta’s a fair few years now.

That j-plate has been restored at least twice now iirc. Really can't recall the guys name.

I think I saw it at billing once but  going back a few years now.

IIRC I remember reading that during the 1980s and before

imported cars or old cars being registered for the first time like ex MoD stock

would get a registration plate based on the date of first registration NOT the date of manufacture

which means you get fun things like an X Reg Traction avant etc

but I do wonder how would such a vehicle work if you wanted to transfer a cherished registration to it?

would it have to be an Age less plate because the car is from 1953, or could you transfer another Y reg or Older suffix reg to it because it was originally issued with a Y reg?

 

(most curiously that traction avant apparently originally wore the plate YEY257W, I wonder how they transferred an X reg plate onto it given that X is after W!)

I had an X reg 76 Firebird in 89.

It changed when the plate style was reversed in83.
