Well fuck me I got it working again

That's rather rude and condensing! Saying thank you when it's still not working is like telling a mechanic "Thanks for not being able to fix my car yet".

Condensing? :) No, I was not being condensating, I truly appreciate the amount of back room work needed to keep this forum online. How was it rude?

I mean it's not a commercial site is it, so we just have to do our best, it's funded collectively by those who are able (but not obliged) to contribute in whatever way, whether that is monitory donations in the fundraiser towards the server/hosting costs etc, or those among us with the skills and knowledge to actually put all of this in place and know what to do and how to manage a server, or whatever it is they do because I don't know!

If we wanted it perfect, then we'd probably all have to pay a subscription so that it can be run like other mainstream forums with commercial benefit. Or for free memberships you'll naturally have to start showing adverts and running sponsorships which would completely ruin the place.

You can't have it perfect without a commercial vibe, or a mandatory subscription. Both of which would certainly kill off the forum.

I know it's frustrating, but I think they're only doing their best to run it, and as above if anybody else is able to contribute some ideas to reduce the frequency of these problems going forwards then that sounds like the obvious answer? There are plenty of IT buffs on here let alone professionals so it probably won't be hard to come up with something

We can't get too greedy, we've already had to remove video hosting which I feel was a great enough loss.. there's some things I'd like to add a video but it's not worth the effort of uploading it to a separate hosting site and then embedding a link.

But I'm not going to complain. Sorry I am one of the ones who don't contribute to the fundraiser when it opens but I hope that at least some of my contributions add enough value, that's what everyone's job is, right? I feel everybody's contributions are useful to someone, the medium (and the lack thereof perfection) it is conveyed doesn't really matter because you can still easily get your point across to those interested enough.

I appreciate you’re fairly new around here so I’ll be gentle 😬

You don’t have to have a commercially minded forum to have a stable forum. Plenty are constantly up; here’s looking at the PH, RR and Gearslutz boards that I frequent regularly.

I would argue that a level of professionalism was introduced here with the self nomination and election of a senior leadership team. With that power comes a level of responsibility too, and it’s not unreasonable to expect that the community they’ve appointed themselves leaders of is actually… you know… functioning.

As someone said upstream - comments like “oh but it’s so Autoshite we’ve got the British Leyland of boards lol” needs a bit of reality. There’s enough funding here for us to both buy and maintain a better and more suitable option.

So, staying as we are, is basically just self sabotage.

Appreciate people have jobs. Totally. Once again, I think it’s a lack of transparency that I find most annoying. It’s nothing to do with a lack of gratitude, just that openness that has somehow been missing.

Most forums are now long, long dead. A bit like Rover SD3s. As anyone who runs old cars knows: the trick is to fix problems quickly, keep on top of maintenance, improve what you can and keep things as simple as possible. If you want an automotive analogy, it should be that. Parking them up or ignoring issues isn’t a good strategy. In fact, it’s not a strategy at all.

I've started the process of moving it to a more stable server. This is an interim measure before giving everything the full fettle, just to stop it going down.

Any updates?

Could you not just expect a small kickback from anyone who sells or roffles a car on here to pay for a more reliable forum?

Or failing that, allow a Live Jasmine pop up advert?

Sorry @RoverFolkUs, I’m confused. I enjoy your posts but if you get as much from this forum as most of us but bemoan the loss of video hosting, why don’t you contribute financially?  Just curious as, when the request comes, I’m more than happy to chip in for the enjoyment I get from being here.

You get what you pay for in this world.

As I have said many times before, I am happy to throw some shekels into the pot.

I've been here through the admin going awol and registrations taking months, spambots subsequently attacking the site, DaveGate, this and the bi- annual implosion and I'm not going anywhere. I'm not so much frustrated as concerned for the well-being of the forum. I'm not convinced it's in safe hands.

No I don't bemoan the loss of video hosting, I was sad to see it go but I accept why it had to happen. But it was taken away because it wasn't financially viable to keep it.

Would a contribution from me bring it back? No. It would need to be collective extra contributions which IIRC at the time, the unanimous vote was to switch to external video hosting rather than do that.

I hope that I give more than I receive from this forum... sometimes I do wonder why I bother posting because unless it's providing some sort of useful/valuable information out the good of my heart, anything I say that is my opinion only receives this sort of collective backlash.

All I was trying to say was in response to earlier posts suggesting the Forum was not doing it's best to keep itself going due to the admin's poor (?) choice of hosting setup.

I do accept the earlier point about a forum not having to be commercial to be stable, fair enough, but complaining about it doesn't help. Suggesting ways to improve it, and most importantly acting on it, is what would help.

Mechanical and electrical things go wrong far too many times in my life. I am just glad that someone else can fix it all for me.

PS who said the internet is full of kittens?

That reminds me of my working days and the level of support you got from our IT department.

Another 10 hours down?

Anyone actually know what the issue is? @brownnova have you heard anything or are you in the dark as much as the rest of us?

I know nothing more than I’ve posted previously unfortunately… I’m equally frustrated.
