Cars you never bought - but wished you had

Not very shite but I bought my Hyundai Matrix recently and when it needed work doing, I was given a courtesy car by the garage. This one.

It’s only a Fiesta 1.4 Dizzle but I fell in love with it and I had a plan hatched in my mind to buy it and give the Hyundai back to the garage. The dealer even said he wouldn’t say no to the deal. However SWMBO was mildly annoyed* at the prospect so I chickened out of the deal. I was absolutely gutted to hand it back.

it’s rather silly and embarrassing to say it, but it really upset me that I couldn’t have it. One day (if they’ve still got it) then it could finally be mine for good and that would be the only car I’d ever need for the rest of my days.

* raging.

I nearly bought a 406 HDI Estate back in 2019, it was up for £950 with a full MOT. Ended up buying a C2 GT for £300 instead. Would have been a bargain if it hadn't rotted its sills out within 2 years. I probably had more short term fun with the C2 but the 406 would have been more fun with an HDI Tuning remap.

Would have been more comfortable to sleep in too.

I fukked up soo bad! Something like 10 - 12 years ago.  Fella I knocked about with offered me this exact Clio Williams…. £1500 quid.. figure this! I turned my nose up at it because it didn’t feel quick enough (150hp) and the clutch was a bit ropey….  Proper proper Williams. It was in really good shape too….. had a light rear end tap but well enough repaired..

Went for a 172 instead! This is from a man that’s beside himself these days with 100hp sambas and 106! What a twat I was!! It was sold on and it’s  been in storage for years.

Would I want a Williams now? Hell yeah!770D7C29-B78C-4007-8C81-A61AE3E2A042.thumb.jpeg.852e0b98c1cdba32bc6ef9754ddb25e9.jpeg

I was offered a three year old Audi S5 by an acquaintance of mine for £5000 as he needed the money to fuck off out of the area sharpish. The only problem was that anyone seen driving said Audi may find themselves getting shot.

Re spray or wrap and a personal plate and you’re still quids in.

I remember when you could get a pretty nice monaro for around £7k - some even less. You need £10k now as a start.

£10k is nothing for a car these days - but to me ( and most on here) it's a lot of dough to be spending on a whip.

I've just been looking at the price of a monaro.  £10k to £20k

It's just the fuel and the fact that I'd loose my licence within days.

- don't ask how fast I'd drive it, but my old omega 3.2 was occasionally allowed to slip into Autobahn mode, for a few preciously potentially licence removing moments.

- I once achieved 8 mpg driving from my house to the motorway, some 8 miles away.

Another typical Warren story 😂

About 12 years ago, one the same as this. £9k at the garage that looked after the 156. Shortly afterwards met the owner (and car) at an Italian Car Day, he offered it to me for £8k with a hint it could be less. Unfortunately I let t go as most of my work driving was around town :(:

When I was 18 I was offered a swap for my Mk4 Executive , a MK1 Cortina 2 door in Alan Mann racing colours with Dunlop Alloys and was badged as a Lotus. It had a 1500GT and full GT/Lotus interior. All absolutely spotless, at the last minute I backed out because the log book was for a 1200 deluxe, what an idiot.

In the years since there have been hundreds, in fact a mate and me used to have a ritual driving home from auctions; “ shoulda bid again on that..”

My latest was the Quattroprte  that I could have had for £4000 about 12 months ago, at the time I got sensible and spent £2000 more on a 2.2diesel Jag because I might need it for work, a few months later I got a real job and the Jag has only done about 2,000 miles in a year. Although it was probably a lucky escape, a friend of a friend bought it, I saw him at a party last weekend and he was driving a courtesy car   from work, he’s a mechanic at Porsche Silverstone.  Apparently it wouldn’t start one evening after work and he, his mates and all the technology at their disposal , plus phoning a Maserati dealership for advice can’t get it to start.

But just look at it.

Back in 1997 a dealer tried to tempt me with a lovely 1988/89 F reg Rover 213 S in British Racing Green. It looked lovely.   Unfortunately it was £495 above my budget at £2,495. I could have paid it but was concerned that I wouldn't be able to afford the insurance. 213 was second on my wish list to a Vauxhall Ashtray 1.3 GL.

In 2010 - 2005 Toyota Corolla 1.6 VVTi Sport 3 door for £4,995. Would have likely been a better proposition than the Nissan Almera diesel I eventually bought.

Recent addition - a manager at my work knows I do buying and selling. Offered me his old Hyundai i30 for £2k as a flip car. 64 plate, lowish miles, but Cat N after being twatted in three separate accidents inc one with a bin lorry, had dinged up bumpers which had affected one of the rear quarters and a buggered AC condenser. Lack of spare cash to take a risk made me say no.

He took great delight in telling me the first dealer he went to paid him £3600 as it sat without any haggling or hassle.

Back in 2001 I had just past my test, and I saw a 1990 Fiat Regata 100 Super I.E saloon for spares and repair in the local Auto Trader.

A garage had been trying to sell it for years and after finding rust in the sill's. They just wanted to cut there losses and sell it on as is for £100!

Other than the sill's it was immaculate but the hefty Insurance quote, plus the fact that I already owned two cars made me decided against it.

Whatever it was that @jollyfkr2 just sold on here...

It was this Pug, selling for a mate, put it on FB marketplace simultaneously for £1000, sold within the hour, by my estimation right now it’s heading north from Dublin to its new home in Co Tyrone. Must’ve had 15 odd people after it!

The metallic dark blue Oldsmobile Delta 88 Diesel which popped up at the road side about 1/4 a mile from here with a for sale sign in the window.  Tidy enough car, though it needed a bit of paint, and was priced well towards the reasonable end of the spectrum.  However I had no room at the inn and decided to go and think about it.  Of course a couple of hours later I'd come to the conclusion of "C'mon, it's such an oddball car where are you going to find another one?" and went back.

Of course it had bloody sold while I was procrastinating about it.
