Back to the Biltong. 

 

I removed mine from the drier box on Wednesday. 

 

Pedro approved (as expected) 

 

Sarah sent a pic of her beautiful lengths. 

They are really good looking. 

Long meats. 

 

Mine are short. 

By choice 

I say.

Spanish Pedro is a teetotaller. 

 

Polish Robert is off work tomorrow so brought home some beers. 

 

I forced him to have a few Fireballs.

Hard to believe. 

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY OWN BILTONG. 

But…….. 

Sarah brought me some of her harvest. 

A few things…. When I slice it, I will smell it. 

NOSTALGIA WILL ALWAYS WIN. 

Her biltong smells amazing. 

A very traditional Biltong. Could be called “Original” . 

Quality beef, great texture, great taste. And looks good. 

My biltong has garlic, chilli and ground cloves (which Sarah loved) 

So in conceding her to win, because sometimes ORIGINAL is the right thing. 

Pedro also reiterated that he loves my biltong, but Sarahs is just sublime.

Frozen Fireballs the only way to go.

I don’t speak about my younger brother much. 
 

41.5 years in the Military. 
Engineering Corps. 
He went through the ranks and various jobs, placements including a few extended foreign jobs in war torn regions, rebuilding infrastructure and doing local instruction. 
 

Known as Dozer or Sargeant Major Dozer, he can drive pretty much anything the military has, he used to pride himself on earning every license he could, both as operator as well as Instructor and Examiner. 
 

Ever since we were kids, he was the guy/kid who would dismantle my mums alarm clocks and reassemble them. 
I recall one weekend as kids, my dad coming home with a box of parts and giving it to Deon, saying that there should be a chainsaw in there. 
A couple of hours later, he started the chainsaw, and there was about another half a chainsaw’s worth of parts in the box. 
 

Anyway, if you put the two of us on the same motorbikes, weight balasted to be the same weight, he would beat me on acceleration etc. I would out-skill him off road on technical level but when it comes to maximising performance, he just has an innate ability to get the most out of machinery. Swap the bikes, and he would do it again. 
 

We were having a chat on an adventure motorcycling forum when this came up, along with interchangeable skills.

Funny how the universe has a way of connecting the dots around us. 

 

Last week, I sold the tricycle to a nice youngster, along with a load of vintage tins for £10.00. I also gave him a few American license plates from my collection and some signs. He lives with his single parent mum and two more siblings in a council house. He works nights 10.00 to 06.00 as a warehouse supervisor. Enthusiastically telling me about his plans for his Skoda pickup and also his daily VW Passat. 

I remember starting out and still have some tools that I bought 44 years ago. 

 

Anyway………

 

I have been keeping an eye open for rusted, broken garden tools to use to make some sculptures with. 

 

Missed out twice from the same widow who is clearing out a garage, as she is relocating to Australia. 

 

Yesterday I drove to her street when she messaged me. Got there (no street number) and radio silence. Bugger !! 

 

Then she replied and said someone picked up everything she put out. 

 

Anyway, I headed home, it’s only 2 miles and get another message. 

 

So I turned around and went back. 

Super nice, we chatted for about an hour. 

 

Then I loaded up this lot. 

 

A mix of roofing tools, gas and plumbing tools, and Imperial and Metric spanners and sockets. Plus a rather large, 16mm vintage Kango drill. 

 

Came home, unpacked and sorted it all. 

 

Called Pedro down to see if he needed anything as I knew he was looking for some 6mm to 13mm sockets to carry around at work. Found some, plus I let him loose on my “secret stash”. 

Happy Pedro. 

 

Next up I messaged Dominic who had bought the tricycle from me, knowing he doesn’t have much in the way of tools. He usually works at a friend’s garage. 

 

So he came over later, as he was actually at his best friends place pottering on the truck. 

 

I gave him all the garage/automotive stuff and also brought out my large shoebox of various screwdrivers and told him to take at least half.  All sizes and shapes. 

 

Obviously chuffed. 

 

I added a few stickers from my collection for him too. Tuba Trucks, Case XX, Mr Zogs Sex Wax. 

 

Oh, and another sign, he loves a sign. 

 

 

We stood out on the sidewalk after loading his stuff into the truck, talking for over an hour. At some point he was saying his best friend was gathering stuff to build a drift trike. Aaahhhh I have a complete gokart rear axle and two wheels with tyres hr can have. So we went back down to dig them out. 

 

At this point I asked him to keep an eye out for me, for a cheap, complete, petrol scooter to use in another of my crazy builds.  

 

“ How cheap “ he asked. So I replied “ Free is really cheap, but under £50.00 is closer to the ideal “ 

 

So he pulled out his phone and showed me the clips you can see inside this video below.

So in a weird way, the universe has delivered. 

 

Last night I also got a Thank You message which shows it was totally the right thing to do. 

 

Hopefully he will deliver, or we will meet up sometime this week for an exchange. 

 

Then I can start to mock up my feeble attempt at getting into A&E or the Emergency Room. 

 

More about that later.

I have to go to London tomorrow for a hospital appointment at the Royal Marsden hospital 

So I went to buy the train  ticket yesterday. 

While down there, I decided to go park up in historical Rochester for four hours for £3.90 and walk around town. 

 

Had an overpriced large Latte coffee for £4.50 and people watched on the sidewalk. 

 

Walked around looking at buildings and stuff, trying to get laid, but only got to interact with a bunch of dogs. Which was awesome. 

 

Took a few photos that many of you would have seen before.

My old lodger, John the driving instructor, was around for a few hours twice this week. 
He needs me to help him change the rear brakes and complete front control arms on his daughters car. 
I was offered it as a paid job, but declined. 
I said I would help/do it with him here because a paid job means I am responsible. 
 

So while he was here, I let him try Sarahs and my biltong, back to back. 
He preferred my recipe. 
 

Next thing he asked me if I could make him a batch, using my recipe. 
 

Of course I didn’t decline it. 
 

He pays for it all, I make and dry it for him. 
 

So yesterday morning I went out and found some beef at £9.99 per kilogram. And four large chicken breasts. I do like them large. 
 

I have not attempted chicken biltong before. But it certainly exists and has been made before. Ask Google. 
 

Impatiently I opened up my box and took a pic after 24 hours.

I think that’s called stirfry. 
 

It all relies on chemical processes. 
 

Salt to draw out the water, vinegar (acid) to clean up. 
 

herbs n spices to marinade. 
 

Dry heat to process, preserve and dry meat.

Well, let’s just say most people look in to see either the latest project of randomness or the 1966 C10 Chevy progress.

 

And progress we certainly have had this year.

 

Between injuring my thumb (which still has not recovered fully) and much intermittent bad weather and my typical side quests and jobs, it took a lot longer than expected and really was stressing me out.

 

I really wanted to complete the bare metal stripping and priming on the bedsides before winter fully kicked in and the cold weather made successful chemical reactions near impossible for filler and primer.

 

Anyway.

 

Multiple false starts later, last Monday was a great day, 16’C and breezy but clear.

 

So I set everything up and started working with my drum sander…… final bare metal process before primer.

 

5 minutes in, the machine quit.

 

Short story, I asked Craig to order me a replacement off Amazon using Prime.

 

Of course I sat here waiting all of Tuesday and Wednesday, by 9.40pm on Wednesday night, the doorbell rand.

 

Spectacularly unimpressed but not surprised.

 

Come Thursday, I started early, weather forecast was mostly dry, breeze, 16’C

 

So I got started with my drum sander, followed by primer and using a Heatgun then packing them away.

 

I still need to do some dent work and filler, followed by more primer on the bedsides.

 

But I’m thinking about looking for a used diesel heater to buy somewhere in order to warm up some space to work in.

 

Challenges ehhhh ??
