Overpriced garages in your area? We've all got one surely?

The Thai FSO Polonez thread down below reminded me. Back in 1997 when I was car hunting for a 9 / 10 year old Astra mark 2 or something similar the was a car site around the corner from me. I had a budget of £2k.

On their forecourt was a white F reg Polonez up at £2,495! So 8 or 9 years old at that time. Back then you could have bought a very tidy F reg Golf Mark 2 for the same money. I think the price dropped to below £2k but fortunately no car buyers were fooled that Polonez was as good as a Golf or Astra built in the same year.

MOUTH OPEN EMOJI

It's like travelling back in time to 2013. Is it a front?

Welcome to the Scottish (in particular, Tayside) car market.

You would be astonished at what things sell for here.

Said it a few times on here, there's a market for shipping cars down south up to here.

Saw a Peugeot 406 1.8 petrol sell for over 3k about 6 months ago.

1 dealer near me i swear is a front, i look at their inventory every now and then for a laugh. Who the fuck is paying 6k for a 90k mile Beetle cabrio from 2004?, And yet they do seemingly sell.....

U WOT M8?

I can't be bothered to check, but surely those Fiestas didn't cost that much new!

I'd agree, I reckon £12-13k max.

There's a Volvo V70 on an 11 plate for £14k 😂😂😂😂😂.

I think it's done about 77k as well so hardly super low miles.

There’s a garage near me that used to be a Skoda MD back in the day. They must have lost the franchise in the early VAG days and became a Skoda specialist. They exist to this day and my outlaws always bought their Fabias from them despite the outlandish prices. I kept my mouth shut but they were paying new prices for 2 year old cars.

BUT. The cars always came with a 100% no quibble warranty and real old fashioned personal service. If it went wrong (normally a flat battery!) they would come to your house or as once happened come straight to a breakdown, give them another car, fix theirs often for free and drop the car back to them. Servicing and MOTs, the cars were always collected from their house and dropped back and the prices were very reasonable. I think all their customers were over 65 and I imagine they never got hassled by your average Marketplace problem generator.

In other words, they paid upfront for top quality no worries service. I latterly realised it was the right call for them.

That's well worth paying for, I agree. Although I guess it's not obvious to an 'outsider' that the premium covers this gold-star aftersales.

There's definitely a market for 'cover me for all eventualities'. Some providers do it in part, eg AA, but this sort of sales/service/breakdown/retail is rare.

It could be a good sales model for someone willing to look for decent stock and prepared for servicing it properly.

WOW.

From my local LOLWUT place.

How does 10k for a 2002 Jaguar X-Type sound?, 2.5 petrol manual,... Ok the very low mileage should carry a premium which may save it in the 'value' stakes v the Perth TT, but....x-types just aren't there, and probably never will be. Low and behold the most expensive x-type for sale anywhere in the UK.  Even if you're set on an X-type for some unknown reason, there are hundreds of low mileage ones out there, newer, for thousands less.

9 grand for a 2007 Eos isn't much better. That's...what? a 5k car, tops on the market?.

Then take the X type for an MOT and find out it’s scrap as it needs a pair of sills.
