AFAIK all plod 850s and V70s had the 302mm R brakes, and I've heard that once the 250hp version of the engine existed they all used that. I would disagree that they don't handle, I've had all 3 of mine (and one of dad's) down twisty country roads at speeds that would be more than adequate for chasing the average scrote in a Corsa, any issues I had were definitely a lack of talent rather than a failing of the car.

Have to agree, have been surprised how capable the 850 and x70 platform is when set up nicely and in good condition. It has confirmed my theory that most of the motor press and "common knowledge" about cars, handling, performance etc is just pub talk.  Turning circle aside that is.

T5s don't like it up them though. Turning up the boost does bend the rods in very short order, as I found out to my cost when my boost control solenoid stuck shut.

Are we allowed forrin rozzers?

Hard to go past the coolness of this.  All Dutch police are 7 foot tall with alarmingly large hand guns - fact.

Harris County's Chevy Camaro with ghost decal.

Used to see these cruising around Houston.  Harris County had money unlike Houston PD who were still running Crown Vics in 2019.

Best American cop car is the old Chevy Caprice though.

This was Houston in October 1991: A Chevrolet Caprice, the Westheimer Art Festival and the Clintons

The Australian built Commodore version never really caught on sadly, it's all crappy SUV type things now, Ford Expedition based I think.

Honorable mention to the Challenger Charger.

I'll stop derailing thread with these colonial ramblings now...

If we're talking forrin and colonial, for my money the coolest ever patrol car was this (even more than the 'hero' car from the same film). Yes I know they were fictional but fuckit...

They're front heavy, quite susceptible to lift off oversteer, with vague, rubbery steering, and they struggle to put 225hp down the tarmac even with UUHP tyres in the dry. Driven at 8/10ths they are perfectly safe and quite stable. Once you go nearer the limit the shortcomings are becoming very clear very fast. It is just my 2 cents. I bought mine for many things but sharp handling. 😆

It could make sense for the police to use R ECU. But I don't think it makes that much of a difference considering it's about 15hp more with the automatic.

My point is that even the normal T-5 225hp is quite fast already especially in period.

850s etc. although stable and good handling cars normally get a bit flustered at high speeds on bumpy roads, spinning inside wheels and feeling jittery. They have quite a basic suspension set up and are big cars with much of the weight over the front driven wheels.

I wonder how the AWD ones compare.

Done many miles in both, at times quite aggressively/carelessly. The AWD doesn’t seem any less understeery and being heavier is even more scary when you really overcook it, like four wheel drifting backwards on wet grass towards a cliff edge.

The only time I've had an 850 backwards (when the intended direction was forwards) was on a slightly greasy roundabout, I wasn't even taking the piss speed wise.

Going very sideways in a big flat icy car park at 3am taught me a lot about how to recover when things go wrong.

That's a Jankel.  I worked for Essex Police, many years ago, and visited the vehicle garages at Boreham once or twice where the Essex Jankel resided.  It was based on a really big American Ford truck, an F-350 possibly, with a diesel engine and left hand drive.  The Jankel rarely went anywhere as all sorts of special permits and so on were needed to drive it; I seem to recall that it was reserved for armed response too.

The name 'Jankel' may be familiar to some: it's the same Jankel, Robert, who was behind Panther, Panther Westwinds and the RJD Tempest.

The flip side of this were the, "undercover" cars they used to use around Paisley.  Maroon Peugeot 309s with the hubcaps taken off.  They were about as distinctive as the full-blown panda cars.

Over here (East Arse of Fife) they have a grey 5-dr Corsa on a 12 plate that stands out an absolute mile. Probably doesn't even blend in round the Leven and Methil hoods. Not with two burly blokes crammed in it looking like they're really* enjoying it.

SP12BVD, still in operation as of Sep 2022.

Do they still have KFE?

Along side the Protons Humberside police also used Subaru's for catching the faster villains, the ones the Protons couldn't, eg someone on a moped.

I'm pretty certain this one is still in use by the Countryside Crime Unit or whatever they're called; I've seen this, or very similar, in the Driffield area.

Finally AT was a Hull prefix/suffix, which could be seen as appropriate on the following...

Dunno. Unless that's the Corsa, cos I can only remember the 'SP12' bit at the start of the plate. I've probably never read the rest of it for laughing.

Twenty years ago the Fife CID used to run about in mid 90s Escort TDs which were utterly hanging. All of them were gloss blue and still had Laidlaw's stickers and plates on. They also stood out like a sore thumb.

KFE is a grey 65 plate BMW, so famous it even had its own totally official Twitter that live tweeted its location!

No piccies but....

I think GMP ran some Chevette 2.3 litre (6 pot?) for a while back when Vauxhall were doing rally sport......

Shite Plod Stuff (when I was young and a shite plodder)
Q Car - Dolomite Sprint  - small and just looked 'job'.
General Purpose Cars - Humber/Sceptre automatics,
replaced by Avenger 1700 auto - on a quiet night you could hear the transmission four streets away.
replaced by Allegro 1750 autos (whoo)
replaced by Cavalier 1300 autos - weird beast but if you pulled the choke out a tad you could creep around all night without touching the pedals.
Fancier stuff
SD1 2600S -awful - could outrun it in a 1600 maestro
Maestro/Montego MG version, torque steer to die for
Favourite ? Anything from The Sweeney :-)
