Thank you. And I've managed to improve my English quite a bit in the time I've been here and google translate has been a great help even if it's not perfect but I still spend some time writing the posts I post here. And forming/making sentences and putting words together is what I struggle with the most, but I'm getting by. But I never thought I would be able to be active on an English forum, so that's something.

Ha,ha, I remember being presented with an EU document to read (before I retired) that was about changes to the way chemicals were to be classified.

It was something like 1200 pages, and unlike you, where it's interesting as it's something you want to learn about, this wasn't.

That sounds like fun.

I second this! You’ve even mastered the difference between “to” and “too”, fair play I say and your effort is very much appreciated. I certainly couldn’t do the same for you 😔

I quickly went through the manual on the engine in this one and I can't find anything about the hole that leaked oil. It is also not included in the drawings as in the picture below and I have marked where the hole is on my engine and as is clear, there is nothing there.

And there should be nothing behind the hole either.

So it's all a bit strange. So I'll just have to wait until I start the engine again and see what happens since that hole is now plugged.

Is the bolt #21 on the diagram in that location on your engine? I'm wondering if it's been moved up to where you've plugged the bolt in, if Mercedes revised that casting.

I didn't realise it was such an effort for you write these posts! I'm sure with your persistence and Google-fu you'll get it in the end. Both car and language.

Is it possible some versions of the car were fitted with an oil cooler, but on others the holes were blanked off? Or something similar. Looking at the diagram, it isn't clear - but it could be bolt 21 as said above.

I echo the sentiments about your writing, if you didn't say, I would never know you weren't fluent in English - so well done and thanks for the effort, this is one of my favourite threads here.

Thanks both of you. I'm quite good at reading and speaking English, it's only the writing that I struggle with. And it's great to hear that people like this thread, I really appreciate that, so thank you all.

And I think bolt 21 is the one I have marked on the picture below, so I don't think it can be that one. And I don't think that hole can be for an oil cooler as they tend to be connected to places with oil pressure and that is not the case here. So it's a bit of a mystery what that hole is/was.

Yes, as all the above have said, great thread on a really interesting car, one that I think everyone here would love to own.

Those seats look lovely too. I know you would like a bench seat back for the originality but I wouldn't put it too high on the list of priorities, they are still period Mercedes seats and look lovely and comfy. I'd also much rather have the armrest in the rear seat.

I have Dolomite seats in the front of my Triumph 1300 as they have higher backs and headrests and they recline (it seems unthinkable now that cars came without reclining seats, but they did). But they are genuine Triumph seats so I'm fine with that.

I will probably keep the seats I have and single front seats will probably make the seat belt installation easier too. And the seats I have are very comfortable.

While I've mentioned seat belts does anyone know of any places in Europe that sell approved seat belts for old cars that aren't the awful black stuff? Because I would like to install seat belts in this and then want something that will fit the car and am not sure if 3 point is easily possible so there will probably be 2 point seat belts I have to look for.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say we all appreciate your effort for posting and keeping us updated on this.  Your English is better than many people I know. It's a pleasure to read.

Great work on the car, too.

Thank you I appreciate hearing this.

This forum is the friendliest I've come across and the vast majority of people here seem like great people so glad I found this place.

This is one of my favourite threads on the forum.

Delighted to see a lovely car like this getting a sympathetic and thorough refresh.

And it's not just the photos and the work being done - the way you write, and express yourself, is a joy to read.

I assumed you were fluent in speaking and writing English; I've never had the slightest trouble understanding what you write (and I've learned a lot, on the technical stuff!)

Keep going, it's just awesome - and thanks for sharing this with us.

Yes. Given the abundance of colloquial English used here, you've managed to do very well. The additional time to write the posts appears to have been focused on grammatical structure, because you use casual linguistic form very well.

Writing in an informal style is one of the hardest aspects of learning to communicate in a new language. English, in particular has such a mish-mash of rules from being such a mish-mash if different languanges it's surprising anybody can speak it at all...

So no, the effort you have put in is noticed by the lack of people correcting you (and they will), plus interesting content about an interesting car.

Keep at it, it will eventually be easier. Flip side, I am on a German forum for older computers and there too they are very tolerant and understanding of my Google Translate skills (or lack thereof), and writing anything intelligible takes me at least three times longer than in English. It can be frustrating but is a good way to learn.

Carbuilder.com do 4 point belts in various colours labeled by TWR racing, their Securon belts (which I have in my DS) are only in black though.

Where your mystery bolt hole is suggests to me it could be something to do with a timing chain tensioner, maybe aftermarket or homemade?

This can be possible, but I'll keep looking for info and pictures and see if I can figure it out. I want to know what this is.

Things have been wild this past month and I've been pushing hard to get as much done as possible with this one and now I've run out of weather and money  it's time to calm things down.

And I have realized that my welding will never be at the level this one deserves so I have decided to get someone else to weld the 2 holes in the floor. But this will have to wait until spring as I can't afford it now.  But I have painted the floor, excluding the areas around the rust holes, with 3 layers of Por 15 and I am very happy with the result.  And the red is all the places where I exposed metal when I scraped away the sound dampening materials and the reason why I didn't use Por15 there is that it probably won't stick as well to clean metal according to several sources. And I also got some paint on the underside of the floor.

I have put a lot of trust in Por 15 on this one, so I hope it is as good as everyone says. And hope all this work I've done can keep the rust away for a while. I have also sprayed the inside of the cavitys and the sills with Fluidfilm I have good experience with this so that should calm down the rust that is there and it is not toxic or flammable so it should not cause problems for future welding if necessary.

There’s a few companies specialising in seat belts in this country:

Universalseatbelts.co.uk

Safetybeltservices.co.uk

Securon.co.uk

To name three. I haven’t any experience of any of these so can’t offer recommendations.

Thank you. This is of great help. And i will look at them.

Universalseatbelts.co.uk they have brown seat belts but with unfortunately modern black plastic fasteners/locks? But I can possibly live with that. And they have both 2 point and 3 point and send internationally so this is a possibility

Brown-Static-lapbelt-w-30cm-webbed-x1-scaled.jpg

Safetybeltservices.co.uk  Has a slightly confusing website and no display of ready-made products with prices. But they seem to have old looking buckles/fasteners on the seat belts wich i like.

And  Securon.co.uk  has a website that appears to be from the early 2000s with little info but https://www.carbuilder.com/uk  which I was tipped off about earlier here sells their products and they are black seat belts unfortunately .

I had no idea that you found writing in English tricky, yours is one of the easier threads to read!!

Securon do a massive range of belts, but seem to be tricky to buy direct, it’s often easier to look via ebay - but all buckles are black plastic even with the coloured webbing (I’ve got a blue set).

The classic VW scene have a range of lap belts that might do the trick - most show naff logos on them, but these are just stickers you don’t have to put them on exhibit 1, plenty more if you Google: https://www.customandcommercial.com/vw-split_screen/splitscreen_interior_parts/splitscreen_seatbelts--and--seatbelt_parts/seatbelt_2_point_with_chrome_buckle_and_beige_webbing_1908/?source=Google%2BShopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj7CZBhDHARIsAPPWv3epaGYwTt1ulBOopx-A-QtH1PS6VQXuDt7UEBG_KL4vAOx1qCH5se0aAhBeEALw_wcB

Not sure how much space you have but inertia lap belts are much nicer - means you can actually move around a bit in your seat - grey example, beige is available as well

https://www.customandcommercial.com/vw-baywindow/baywindow_interior_parts/baywindow_seatbelts--and--seatbelt_parts/chrome_buckle_2_point_inertia_seat_belt_with_grey_webbing_36817/?source=Google%2BShopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj7CZBhDHARIsAPPWv3f68VYaRj8hTqsiHAsos1EpECjdeAmMFLEwztNB1P_qakRK5cHZnR4aAiYcEALw_wcB

Not sure that any with chrome/metal buckles are actually E marked though, I seem to think it’s the buckles that are the issue on most of them, in that they are low volume and hence cost of approval is deemed too high. That said, it’s a 2 point lap belt in an elderly Mercedes with no safety features, so unless there’s an issue with MOT equivalent testing requiring E mark I’d personally not be too bothered about the possible safety implications of this!!

Thank you. And these seat belts were very nice is something like this I want in this one. But I am unfortunately skeptical when seat belts do not have any form of approval as this is safety equipment. This car also has to go in to the Norwegian equivalent to mot every 2 years and I am afraid that they will check the seat belts so it is a challenge. Fastening seat belts is also a challenge as I don't want to damage the car. So putting seat belts in this is not easy but is something I feel I should do.

This lot seem to offer what you are after - https://www.quickfitsbs.com/seat_belts.php - period style seatbelts actually tested to the relevant standards.

Fitting seatbelts is pretty easy when the car is stripped out, just  case of selecting a suitable point for a mounting hole, then welding on a mounting plate which are available pre-made.
