Cavcraft Posted February 26, 2010 Author Posted February 26, 2010 You're not bloody joking there Pete. The ones who bring their 'car expert' friend/relation down are the best though, picking big faults like scratched wheeltrims and non-working fag lighters on £200 cars.FT:Feeling your pain here chief, plagued by fucking annoying sensor problems on a Vectra CDTi
boobydoo Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Yeah, we had some hatchet-faced old hag in the showroom the other day wanting to buy a new Smart on scrappage. Wasn't satisfied that she was getting £2000 off an £8500 car simply for having a worthless piece of old cack. Was quite rude to the salesman saying that the £2000 was from the government and we as a dealer should discount even further.I was "summoned" out to explain that as a dealer we still make a contribution to the scheme and that we would literally be making £300 profit if we sold her a car, less salesmans commission. Basically she didn't believe me and insinuated I was a liar. It's at times like this that you just want to say "F**K OFF!"
fiatdaft Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 how come your dealership is making a contribution?
Justin Case Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 My 9 year old Alfa is worth £1130 (average condition) What a pity it isn't a year older, I would have been £870 up if I had traded it for a new Hyundai I10
trigger Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Was quite rude to the salesman saying that the £2000 was from the government and we as a dealer should discount even further. It wasn't Fred was it?
boobydoo Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Grand from the government.Grand from Smart, of which approx 30% of the dealers margin in the car is deducted as contribution.Same with a Merc.No dealer contribution though on Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge product.
fiatdaft Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 just wondering,as thats the first i have heard off dealer contributions to the 2 k.cheers
fiatdaft Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 the mark up is rather larger though.and you don't have arguments over the price of the old cuboard doors they are bringing back to you.nobody in there right mind would start from scratch selling new cars as the profit margin is tiny, while the expenditure is huge.
boobydoo Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Below my gym is a "Carpet-Right" shop. They were recently advertising 50% off everything PLUS another 20% off for a limited time. It's then that you start to think that maybe the original retail price is a bit suspect? As for DFS et al.....does anyone ever buy anything full price...?
fiatdaft Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 yes all the time, does anybody haggle while they do there shopping?
warren t claim Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 yes all the time, does anybody haggle while they do there shopping?I do if it is something electrical, expensive or second hand.Edit: I don't get done! I get Dom!
fiatdaft Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 like you have yourself?also i know a 5k kitchen can turn into a 3.5k kitchen with enough profit to be happy with and a decent commision for the salesman.
Father Ted Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 yes all the time, does anybody haggle while they do there shopping? No, only houses, cars and motorbikes - recent deals were:Yamaha - paid "screen" price but got luggage set & Datatag fitted. Happy as Larry with this.Micra - got £100 off the screen price and to keep my knackered old nail of a P/ex which I wanted £200 against the screen price for (and I was honest with him about how much of a knacker it was) Sold said nail via evil bay for £250! Very happy with this.Zafira - paid screen price, but got a tow bar and new tyres, plus the dealer matched the trade price in offered by a local car supermarket which was more than book value. So I was happy as Larry again. Shame the car is a Friday afternoon special though. So I haggle a bit, yes.
fiatdaft Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 but not when shopping for food, clothes etc.
Guest Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I should haggle for my clothes, it's not like anyone else really wants the dreadful things I go for.
vicsmith Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Yeah talking of that weird sleeveless fleece bodywarmer/waiscoat thing, how much did you have to give Steptoe before he agreed not to put it in his brazier?
Minimad5 Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 #weird sleeveless fleece bodywarmer/waiscoat thingI thought i was the only one who still wore these outdated things
Father Ted Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 but not when shopping for food, clothes etc.No, but I buy Asda "smart price" food and clothes from Matalan. Already cheap as snow.Actually talking of which my water bill has gone DOWN by £10 this year. Very surprised. Thats never happened in the last 20 years.
Guest Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Yeah talking of that weird sleeveless fleece bodywarmer/waiscoat thing, how much did you have to give Steptoe before he agreed not to put it in his brazier?Least I paid for my outfit, you just stole yours from Tucker Jenkins' locker when he was at the swimming baths.
Father Ted Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Well, its as I thought - the local dealer has offered me about £6500 to £7000 for the Zaffy against this one 1600 Petrol Life with Air Con. And wants me to pay the labour on swapping the towbar over. On the plus side its only done 6000 miles which seems bugger all. Oddly bugger all in fact. Anyway I will see on Thursday what the issue is with the DPF again....
r.welfare Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Do you do a lot of M-Way driving FT? Try the 1600 first - the 1800 I hired last year revved it's nuts off (4000rpm @ 75mph!) which made for tiring and not especially economical progress.
Father Ted Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 No, not really - which is why the CDTi is getting clogged. I make the point of taking that for a motorway run every week, but its clearly not doing the trick as the DPF is once again fooked. We do about 7000 miles a year - but really need 7 seats ( 5 of us and very often other kids / MIL / MILF etc)
r.welfare Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Basic petrol is probably the way to go then.I like the Zafira concept, but wasn't impressed with the refinement of the one I drove. Mind you, every single new Vauxhall product (albeit with a five-speed) I've driven recently has had stupidly short motorway gearing. Can't the design team unearth a Cavalier from Vauxhall Heritage to see how good they used to be?
Father Ted Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Yes - the really annoying thing is the 6 speed diesel is bloody nice at speed, its quiet too with it just turning over about 1800 RPM at 80 in 6th gear. Shame its so shonky. The petrol one we test drove wasnt as nice at all. But I will happily sacrifice some niceness for reliability (esp given that the wife is driving it full time)
fiatdaft Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 agree with the comments on the zafira, but not being funny, why did you buy a diesel if you only do 7k a year,i do try to put of punters doing that kinda mileage who want to buy a diesel.btw the dpf prob affects any car fitted with them that does low mileage / short journeys, nothing to do with fiat or vauxhall.its the euro laws that make the manufacturers fit them, and not all are fitted with them, but of course most of the time you don't know till the light comes on.tayne,i still see that you don't undertand the motor industry or the scrappage scheme, and i aint gonna waste my time going through it again.and your comments seem to suggest that its ok for companies apart from the motor trade to try and make a profit.maybe the guy down the pub you listen too is full of the stuff you "design" things to get rid off.
Milford Cubicle Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Yeah it's mental buying a diesel if you don't do that many miles, it'd probably take you many years to recoup the extra purchase price.
Father Ted Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 agree with the comments on the zafira, but not being funny, why did you buy a diesel if you only do 7k a year,i do try to put of punters doing that kinda mileage who want to buy a diesel..Had diesels for years and prefer them over petrols in terms of mechanical simplicity (!!!), and the Zaffy was the newest car I had bought since 1989 and was supposed to last me 7 - 9 years, we are also tow a caravan and the diesel is a better tow car with its low down grunt.Real bummer that its just not working out for us.
