Shite racing. 24 hours of Lemons, 'merica, October.

Just woke up. Still exhausted.

I was a judge for the penalties, when I wasn’t driving, and in the interest of fairness I did actually blag flag one of my own team mates, in our own car. His penalty was to record a dating video. In real life he’s a voice over artist. Cost us 6 laps but was so funny. They tried to get me black flagged but I was out for the car being sick at the time as it’s such bloody scary racing.

Last month I made my own racing debut in a similar 24 Hours de Lemons here in NZ. There were a total of 101 cars competing - it was every emotion from terrifying through to exhilarating! Our race car was an early E36 320i. For some reason it is not letting me upload any photos to my post

Having another go at uploading pics

I was watching 1 of Dennis Collins's youtube video where he was dropping off a car to be shipped to the UK

The guy he was dealing with said it cost around $800 to ship it over.

Just a thought...

+VAT, port fees, registration fees, the transport to the port,... Especially now with a weak pound the cost of shipping is closer to 2 grand, if not 3.

I am never, ever drinking again. My organs and bank balance can’t take it.

Coffee is five bloody quid. Vehicles here are predictably massive and horrible. I’m hoping to spot some chod when we get out of Boston. Racewear I’ve rented is here, it pongs a bit, HANS device looks like some sex apparatus and is uncomfortable. It’s pissing with rain and our racecar has no roof and no heater. I’m chomping through painkillers and am never drinking again

Oh, and the hotel is some gay hotspot with communal showers and bunk beds with romantic lyrics above them.

Right. First stint done (test day). This is honestly the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done. Zero track etiquette, 115 cars, huge difference in vehicles and a lot of very mental people. Track is fast and tricky. Recommended.

First race session tomorrow.

I could have written exactly this the other month. Ours had 101 cars and there were a lot of very “unlemonesque” proper race cars - they were going past me like scud missiles!

The Caddy, left, had some monsterous engine swap and forced induction and swooped past everything, before tippy-toeing around bends, the E30 325i Batmobile was lowered but wallowy, but never seemed to need refuelling... hmmmmm. And check the hill behind which is followed by a 90 degree right hander which rolled a Golf and caused me much pant-shittage.

I assume that if someone tried to do this in the UK there would be so many safety regs slapped on it that it wouldn't be worth doing.

I feel you’re right, but on the other hand the safety gear is all mandatory and top notch, cages are built to a spec, and the organisers are pretty sharp. People do race other stuff in the U.K., right? I’d love to see it here.

I looked into it 10+ years ago with the guy who ran Streetsafari rallies at the time. We had a few LeMons teams on the Big Apple to Big Easy rally in the States and that sparked it off.

Suffice to say the track operators wanted the highest level of H&S stuff adhered to, and it would have been ruinously expensive with all the safety kit in the cars and require all the drivers to have proper racing licences. It didn’t happen.

The only way we could have realistically done it was as a 24hr track day - i.e. no racing.
