EVs at Goodwood

Watching highlights of Goodwood FOS can’t help thinking the EVs lack the drama of ICE cars with just the feint wiring of the electric motors in place of roaring V8/10/12s or even the more modest cylinder numbered rally cars like the Quattro , Impreza or MkII Escort.

I suppose we’ll get used to them over time and marvel at how fast they are compared to the “old” ICE technology ,but the noise IS part of the experience.

Abarth have picked up on this very point. This is from a recent article (I hope they go with the latter):

The company is also undecided as to whether it gives the Abarth 500 a fake petrol-engine soundtrack, or to accentuate the car’s electric motor and gearbox whine. Olivier François added, ‘Do you want to put a super Abarth-ish sound or we can also invent a kind of Formula E sound that’s very loud’.

Quite a bit quieter than anything with an actual exhaust.

There's some fuckers out there with small dicks, and zero personality trying to make up for it, with zero silencing.  Fuckwits.

I say that respectfully as our own MX5 has a stainless performance exhaust which is pointlessly loud.

They’re too quiet already, can’t hear the buggers coming. They need a speaker underneath with some comical clown car sound track as they move along. Job sorted.

Pedestrians just need to look. (Obviously the blind get run over by bicycles regularly, and they need bells)

Yeah but petrol engines scare the horses and we’ll all die if we travel faster than 15 mph. Maybe EV owners should all employ someone to walk in front of them with a red flag if they want to drive somewhere.

Life is a terminal disease.  It gets you in the end.

There's quite a few EV Porsche saloons near where I live.  When you watch them pull away from a junction, quietly and quickly, you can see the attraction.  Wish I had exploited more people, had more talent, had worked harder, had inherited more money etc...

It's not even that, although maybe the microphones picked it up better. If you were there in person all you heard was tyre noise on anything but the all-out racecars.

A mate I was with reckoned that in the future we'd be choosing tyres based on the sound they made - I'm not convinced.

Slightly off topic - I was disappointed that whilst the Solo went up the hill climb, the Ami didn't!

I can’t imagine anything more pointless that watching two electric cars race. I’d imagine some people will find it interesting but then there are people that listen to Cricket on the radio.

I have to agree, they are soulless things, none of what I saw at Goodwood would make me want to go and watch them race, the formula extreme, formula E, electric rallycross etc etc were dull, yes they were fast but for me it's as much about the noise and smell and vibration of racing cars, which EV's offer non of.

If they had more sparky motors and smelt like scalextric I would love them more.

If they flew off and hit the skirting boards that’d liven things up.

You do, of course, remember the classic Muddy Talker commentary, at Lydden, and the guy in the mini - having a 'toast rack' screenwash set up - for "much improved visibility".....

Exit mini >>> straight into bank????
