@Low Horatio gearbox "Excellent  fabricobbling a restricted plate!"

I'm sure that somewhere there's some royal proclamation 'defacing a coin of the realm shall earn thee a night in the Tower' 🤔

I, however, bent/cupped a 1p... To bodge a Welch Washer, in the kingpin of my IMP 😕

Luckily it was a queens coin, so I don’t think I’ll get in trouble. Haha.

I enjoyed that video. I haven’t driven the auto yet, but I think he was a bit harsh. It’s a luxury barge not a sports car. I intend on wofting around in this one, not ragging it round the streets at night 🤣

Same here. I enjoyed wafting in it, not interested screaming around in any of the cars I've had. Had some nice luxury barges in my time, inc a P4 Rover 90 and Triumph 2000. D249 FWS replaced a Mk1 carbed, manual 2000 Carlton. The driving experience is very different for two apparently similar cars. Having injection and auto meant an effortless, smooth ride - a car I always enjoyed driving. Fingers crossed for the test on 15th.

So I’ve been and got the Carlton out of the garage round the corner. I put jumper cables on it from the Audi “just in case” and it fired straight into life. Unfortunately the garage has more leaks than the titanic. Probably be dryer leaving it outside. But as MOT day looms close, I need to check a few things out. Pumped the tyres up. Check. Fluid levels, check. Got some oil on order which should be coming today so I can get that done before it gets driven properly.

I noticed oil leaking from most of the rocker cover gasket. These are notorious for leaking. Cork gaskets belong in the sea! I will buy a rubber one eventually but for now….

whipped that bad boi off and the gasket is crumbly with a hint of silicone on the top face. Not ideal for a cork gasket.

it’s definitely seen it’s time.

with that off, I scraped the cack off and wire wheeled the mating surface.

then found a 2.2 gasket set in stock, winner. Ok it’s a cork gasket but it’ll do for now.

and using some 400 wet n dry cleaned the head surface up to ensure it’s clean.

Hopefully that’ll be fine. Maybe not.

I remember constantly changing rocker gaskets on these and Cav's that I owned back in the day. They had a really low torque setting, yet still leaked, so you'd nip them up a smidge more, it would still leak, nip it up a bit more and split the gasket so back to square one.

Yep. Been there done that.

Well fed ex haven’t arrived yet with my oil. Should be today. Hopefully it comes today otherwise it’s going to mot with old oil in it. Which looks and tastes ok but would prefer it changed.

Have ordered 20w50. It’s got all the minerals and dinosaurs in it that a car like this needs. CIH engines are good for that grade. It states 10/40 in all the manuals but the hive mind says otherwise. I have no idea what’s currently in it, but I’ve ordered enough oil to do at least 3 changes. Will give it 150 miles then do another.

I’m pretty sure D61 OGS was the same car that was in the books about advanced driving on motorways that I bought years ago. The number rings a bell.

EDIT: in this book I believe.

I still have a copy of that book.

Well, another text this morning from Fed ex. “Your parcel will be delivered today between 0830-1230”

thanks. It should have been here yesterday…… and it still isn’t here! Going to have to risk it on the old oil. I’ll be heading out shortly.

Made it to the test station!

drives fine. things to note.

brakes need bleeding again.

oil definitely needs changing now. Pressure is a tad low on idle, but nothing to be shitting the bed at right now

change gearbox oil again

new battery.

do I change the tyres? Maybe. Rides a bit hard and that could be down to hard old rubber. Can get tyres for £35 ish each for decent mid range.

maybe change the wiper blades, again rubber a bit hard.

positives to note,

no oil leaks! Gearbox is fixed.

Radio sounds good.
eric Clapton tape has been recorded over with Sade, from 1985. Living the dream!

She’s still under the knife. So far the dash lights don’t work, that’s be the reostat in the dash, I’ll bypass that. And a metal fuel pipe has started leaking. I’ll be replacing that for it to go home. Luckily the garage is ran by a very good friend who will let me fix it on the ramp
