Find me some shite - in France

It's a roll of the dice. I'm not sure how the insurance would work on a non-CT car.

Menton to Calais is a long drive anything wd be better trailered if not road legal.

There are quite a lot of police around where I live - 60 miles outside Paris - I've never been pulled over by a moving vehicle - it's always being flagged down at a road-block.

The main thing they are interested in is drink drivers, drug smugglers and speeding. The death rate on French roads is about x2 what it is in the UK and they are desperate to bring it down.

You will get all your documents inspected - and if it is a big show on the autoroute lots of hassle if things are not right.

I've not yet been stopped, only checked out when I'd blown a tyre in the Subaru. Are you more or less likely to be stopped on the RNs than the autoroute?

1981 Renault 18 in the Cantal region with CT ok until 2026. 2000 euros. Looks nice-ish. I am guessing cars are cheaper in the less affluent rural departments of France. Mot and tax free once back in the UK.

Looks good. Models like that have no significant collectors following in France so are still cheap.

Yes. The autoroute shows are very rare but very big affairs. You'd be very unlikely to get caught up in one -though there are occasional speed cops on bikes I see. The autoroute roadblocks are looking for drugs and contraband and involve usually the CRS, machine guns etc etc.

On the RN's they are more frequent  - usually the local gendarmerie just outside a town to catch drunks and speeders. And often more prevalent during French national holidays and at the height of summer when roads are busy.

It's all usually a very polite affair - and really is quite normal - just be prepared with a folder of documents.

Not seen a R18 in years!  They seemed to rust like buggery here. At least the ones I looked at in the’80s…. As I recall the GTL is quite plush and has the 1.4 engine.
