doesn't look too bad but I have a horrible feeling those gaiters are a rack out job

it's not like the C5, if this was the C5 i'd get it done no questions asked

but, i don't know what else is wrong with the the XM

popping down the garage for a chat about it in a bit

the problem is if it's a rack out job, then i'm reluctant to do it on a car i know nothing about

i know i have huge balls, but i've got to be a bit sensible about it

In that case, I retract my earlier statement.

if by some miracle, and unlikelines they can pass it for £500

i'll do it

otherwise i'm going to ask if i can pick it up tomorrow and then have a think

i've spent £45 on parts for it so far

even if it passed it still needs a cambelt etc, lots of reiwiring, a service, bodywork

is it worth it?

£1,500 at least i'd say to make it a nice one, don't forget i paid £1,000 for it in the first place

£2,500 in total

could probably have got a sorted one for that....almost into reasonable CX territory

Looks alright to me, not much different to other rack gaiter jobs

How about do the bare minimum to get it a ticket then sell it on?

It's then a running car with a year's ticket and you haven't got to spend out on the cambelt or the cosmetic bits

Cant imagine you'd make a loss if doing that

i must admit, and this is so very unlike me

i'm just not feeling it at the minute, is that understandable? who knows

as i say it all depends what they tell me, and i'm going to ask them a simple question "is it worth it"

I'm sure you will already be planning to do so but worth chatting through it with Paul and see how easy/hard everything will be

Yes it's understandable and perfectly normal to have second thoughts about things.

Just looked and book time is 1-2 hours on the rack gaiters each side, so may not be rack out. 1-2 hours on the anti roll bar link. I think realistically 4 hours for the lot if things go pear shaped and things are seized.

Is it worth it? I'd suggest not asking the garage's opinion on that. To them it's just an old car with 190k miles, Citroen specialist or not.

You're just over £1000 into it, get a price on all the work and figure out what you can easily do yourself to save a bit of money.

Add those two figures together and see if you could get that back selling a running, driving and road legal Citroen XM, possibly in need of a cambelt and bodywork by the new owner.

Then work out what you're going to get for it as it is.

Which one looses you the most money? Which option makes you the most happy - saving a Citroen XM from scrap or saving your time/money/sanity by binning it off to someone else?

If the spark of enthusiasm isn't there for it, that won't help you but try to remember how far you've got with it already

I had an errand to run this morning, 40 miles away and I took the XM because I wanted to drive a car that looked like a spaceship and rode like a magic carpet...

They are well worth the time and effort to look after them. The items on the MOT list don't look bad and once they are done, you won't have to worry about them again...

just got back from the garage, glad i went down actually

so we had a really good chat about everything, and i'm glad we did

they're going to call me with an estimate for the repair work within the next day or so

if it's £700 or less than i'm going to let them just do it all, that's easily the most logical and sensible thing to do at the moment

i reckon, off the top of my head £640 to do it all

need to track down some headlights

yep just been to the garage to talk to them about it

no point DIYing it now, it's there it makes sense for them to do it

going to call me with an estimate for the repair costs

try and get OEM gaiters if you can. they don't fix with an external clip they have locating feature in them which clips to part of the rack. after market ones usually don't and the outer ends keep pinging loose

I'll leave it to them, they're a good garage and I presume will use an OEM gaiter

I'm sure it will be worth it in the end, even if the car isn't a keeper

I just can't see it being more than 700, especially when we were talking about it

Thing is, once its done then its done

Just glad it's not the water pump that's leaking, can put off a cambelt change for a bit

I should imagine a garage is capable of rectifying that lot in a day. 8 hours @ £50/hour + VAT is £480, leaving you a buffer of £220 for parts.

Minus the headlights, I think that's doable

Getting some headlights on Saturday

Guess I am fixing it then

Well unless they quote me a grand then I'll have to have a think

Even with all the work and money and etc an mot'd xm with some work done even if it needs a cambelt will probably not see you a huge loss...

Cambelt won't be that hard either, and well documented. Andyrew would probably do a decent price on the parts. I'd almost say I'd give you a hand but your far away and I've never done a belt on this engine before.

Access will be a twat though 😂

Been thinking about it some more

It makes sense for the garage to do the work seeing as it's there and I trust them, and at the end of the day it's then a sorted XM

Cambelt can wait a month or so, need to recover from how much this'll cost lol

That's great you've tracked down some headlights already, just a case of waiting to see what they come back with now!
