Doom blue Vauxhall Astra on a J plate, 1.4L. @sierraman and your old man hav seen the deepest, darkest pits of human melancholy.

I remember once the bassist in my old band turned up to a gig in a gold third-generation Astra.  Apparently he'd crashed his Fiesta and needed another car straight away and it was all he could get.  That would have been ok in 1998 but it was 2008 and possibly the most depressing thing I've ever seen.

I fell down a 90s Vauxhall rabbit hole today!

My dad had a 1.7 TD LS estate, doom blue again. Following on from four MK2 Astra estates the MK3 felt a bit more luxurious. He'd not had power steering or electric windows before then.

Driving a turbo diesel was a fun new experience, those early ones were quite peaky and didn't have anything below 2500rpm.

It was still a bit of a pudding to drive, though.

Poor old Carol V - reams and reams of boring lines to learn for a video that dealers would surely not watch. "You MUST read your information pack". The whole thing feels very Partridgian.

Of the cars they compare to, the Rover looks the pick of the bunch to me. Comparing to the contemporary Escort was almost cheating, everyone knew it was shit.

I’m afraid it got worse, some years later he bought a doom blue Zafira 1.6 on the basis it would be easier for my elderly grandfather to get in and out of. I’ve explained clearly to him if the boot was on my foot I wouldn’t be extending such a gesture.
