Our V60 is a superb old rounder, we use it a lot more than the XF tbh, from here to Scarbados, and with a week of pooling round, it will average high 50 MPGs, will fit absolutely everything we need in it, and is so quiet, especially on the new 235 45 17 Bridgestone Weather Control Evos.

And it possibly one of the best looking estates, to my eyes at least!

Another Mondeo fan here. Currently have 2x Mk4.5 Titanium x sport. Black and silver ones. One is an infill car as I picked it up for decent money. Other i’ve had for 70k miles (now on 150k) and generally been fine apart from a turbo issue and high mileage wear and tear. This black 150k one was my first Mk4.5 and I intend to see that through 200k+. I’ve bought/sold/sourced a fair few for friends and family as a result of them seeing ours and realising you get an awful lot of spec and looks for the money, compared to the german marques they had shortlisted. My wife runs one as a daily with our daughter and the dog but ultimately wants something different. But is also trying to find something that ticks the boxes like one of these, that isn’t one of these lol

Both are 2.2 tdci’s mapped to approx 240bhp. V.reliable. The black one has the 337mm XC90 brake upgrade (direct fit) and a great addition to the motorway muncher/tow car.

The ones I’ve kept long enough have been work horses with regular towing where possible and they’ve been great.

I had 2x mk3 estates too. The green one was the first and supposed to be an E39 530d m sport, but the mondeo just blew it out the water in almost all area’s when we compared running costs, tax, insurance, load space, reliability and purchase price. That older 2.2 ‘puma’ ford diesel lacked power compared to the E39 but I think in the long run the mondeo was the better decision and I’ve continued with that comparison since and the mondeo keeps coming out on top.

My mum had a brand new 1998 C240 estate. £34k new. Garaged it’s whole life, full MB history (insane service/repair bills). And when I sold it with 50k miles in 2009 I struggled to get £2k for it. The rust was horrific. :(

Anyway, mondeo FTW!

I've had a few:

1975 Mini Clubman Estate

Stopgap cheapie after I'd written-off my309.

1986 Nissan 300C estate (Y30)

My next estate was a bit of a contrast to the Clubman. Nissan 300C with smooth V6.

1978 Datsun 100A FII Estate (F10) c.2001/02

Back to a small estate again, but with a leaf-sprung back end this was remarkably capable. I brought a load of workshop manuals home in it. I think this car still survives, I saw photos of it fairly recently.

1982/83 Datsun Bluebird 1.8GL estate

This Bluebird looked OK but had a few mechanical issues and I didn't keep it long.

Datsun 180B estate (610)

One of my favourites, what a great-looking thing.

1996 Toyota Camry 2.2 estate

Of course a Camry was going to feature in my list. This was the first of them., bought simply because I neededa big estate. I'd also been considering Scorpios, Carltons etc, this happened to turn up at the right time.

1983 Datsun Sunny 1.5GL estate (B11)

This was bought for £25. I'd hoped to get it on the road but it needed too much work, a shame as I think they're the most attractive of the B11 Sunny range. Sold it to a local banger racer.

Goodbye Primera

This high-spec P11 was family transport for several years, but I never really gelled with it and it was sold cheaply after an MoT failure.

Another Camry joins the fleet

Yay! Can't believe it looked this smart once. Now it's been scrapped. They work so well as an estate, with the bonus of being a 7-seater if required.

Time to get sensible

The first of two Avensiseseses. This diesel 2-litre was no fireball but a faithful plodder, it drove much like an old petrol-engined car. Kept it for four years, replaced it with a facelift 1.8 petrol which was somewhat disappointing (gutkess thing with no torque).

2014 Lexus RX450h Luxury (+ friend's 929)

Don't know if my current RX counts as an estate - it doesn't have a completely flat floor or a particularly long loadbay, but last year it shifted an awful lot of 'stuff' when we moved house, making numerous trips to and from the storage container loaded-up with magazines, brochures, workshop manuals, etc. Even the Camry would have struggled with the weight of them, but the RX is so heavy to start with it didn't make much difference.

It's the closest I can get to a Camry estate in the modern Lexus/Toyota range and I'm planning to keep it for a good few years yet. I wouldn't want to be without an estate of some sort and this does the job well.

Edit: A few weeks ago I had a very vivid dream about seeing or maybe even owning a Mk3 Cortina estate, it was a 2000E in Roman Bronze and it looked fantastic. The image of it has stuck in my mind, even in waking moments I think the Mk3 estate is a fantastic-looking car. One of them alongside a Laurel and Opel Manta A would make a nice trio in my fantasy garage.

Yes! Love the twin wiper camry’s.
we had one on holiday once in Ireland when I was young. Loved them ever since but never had the need/opportunity (at the same time) to own one.

Dad: ‘we need a vehicle for 4 adults and 4 children for a 2 week holiday’

Hire company: Here’s a 7 seater estate.

ah the 90’s…

(Another trip a few yrs later they gave us a toyota picnic. Again, 7seats).

Terrible way to treat a car this nice when it would have been new!

I did not expect to see another one of these in this thread, there really aren't many of these accord estates about.

The family have one as a run around, always end up borrowing it myself as my corolla saloon isnt the most pracitcal car.

image.thumb.jpeg.5f0f7ff4be1ef6ea6413cab2a56f8ddf.jpeg

Being a 2.0 petrol model with all the trimmings its a lovely place to be, only let down slightly by a clutch that bites about 2mm from the floor (apparently normal??) and the terrible electric tailgate that always fails on these, thankfully the previous owner has handy with wiring and added a new motor and home made linkage that works from the rear wiper motor 12v line 😅

Volvos are still unchartered territory for us. When we eventually replace our BMW E91 we'll have to test drive a D5 I reckon. I Iiked the look of them a while ago but Mrs DL (who would be dailying it due to her commute) wasn't keen on the interior.

I've just done a bit of reading on the engines and they seem to be pretty reliable?

My first estate was in 1986: a 78 Toyota Cressida.  Since then I've had a few, especially Volvos.  I do like the convenience of an estate car; the bigger the better really as there are times when one needs to carry something long (stop sniggering at the back there!).

In recent years:

100_3801.thumb.JPG.ebc215aba8a0ec969d90e98253dd59b2.JPG

940 turbo auto from @rawy of this parish.  Somehow I never felt quite at home in it so I sold it on to @rml2345.  It gave its life for his when assaulted by a combination of ice and bus.

There followed a Saab (which acted as Support Vehicle on my collection of Huggy in 2016) and a Citroen Xantia (a well-known AS bike), and then a bit of a gap.

DSCN3229.thumb.JPG.66edbf5aefa0d25325144bf4de7b2eca.JPG

Until this came in.  Already something of an AS bike, it moved on to @cms206 (seen above on handover day) and thence to @Split_Pin.  Hmm, two Volvos have left me and gone over the border, there must be something in the legend!

I'm not going to rule out another estate, I do like having one around.  I'd really love to have a 70s American station wagon, or even 60s!  But it's not going to happen, I can barely afford a pint of milk these days.  (You think I'm joking?  I'm not!)

Do like a bit of an estate, me.

DSC_2307.thumb.JPG.9dd4ba3f6cbcb0f483399de715ff29e9.JPG

1982 Ford Cortina 2.0 GL I bought in 2008. Now believed dead, sadly. Looked good up top, but plenty of rot lurked beneath.

Which was replaced by this low-mile, one-owner '93 VW Polo Mk2F in all-singing Genesis trim level - maybe not technically an estate, but it was square and I did get a washing machine in the back...

DSC_5294.thumb.JPG.38029ea71ed1999a4e062a311b03d8e4.JPG

Sold to an idiot, who scrapped it very soon after.

Replaced by this '96 Citroen XM in 2.5 litre turbodiesel format, which was urgently needed for a house move...

DSC_5572.thumb.JPG.76521b513d608ef7c679312b70a2e6ba.JPG

But although very very comfy and surprisingly reliable, a few months later at MOT time it turned out to be crusty AF underneath, with the appallingly bodged sills eviscerated all over the testing bay - plus the block was cracked.

So it was sold to a specialist XM breaker, and replaced with a bit of a classic...

P1060918.thumb.JPG.5b0536c052165283a01aef80766b8094.JPG

Cosmetically scabby, but ultra-dependable '88 Volvo 240, with a mere 60k on the clock. Used as a workhorse for a house renovation, and over 18 months of slog it it only needed a headlight bulb and a windscreen washer jet. The 2.0 litre redblock was thirsty but wonderful.

Sold back to the guy I'd bought it off for nearly what I'd originally paid, but sadly then banger raced. This is one I really wish I'd had the space to keep; the blue velour interior was stunning.

Another '93 Breadvan came along after an unhappy stint with an Alfa 156, this time in vindictively basic Fox spec:

P1080179.thumb.JPG.2bf6196eb8d72fdbd222a1c5b2d2477e.JPG

It remains the only car I've ever sold for more than I originally paid. However it still remains on SORN, some eight years after two very enthusiastic Dubber kids took it away.

After many years of Rennering, this came along in 2018:

20180516_213026.thumb.jpg.2f9880e481c86d41bbb75d74bd231fa3.jpg

Impressive '03 Subaru Forester 2.0 XT, which I absolutely loved... when the alarm wasn't playing up. Pace and space, plus what an engine note.

Killed by rampant rust late last year, tragically.

Which brings me to the current estate: another Subaru, this time in Outback flavour...

554982748_IMG_20211106_1744232.thumb.jpg.97354e19df6fb49ee5a5cbfa2793ab15.jpg

Newest car I've ever owned; very capacious and with plenty of toys. 2.5 n/a engine this time. Fingers crossed for the MOT next month...

Only common problem seems to be door latches and a couple of common engine sensors failing.

Sensors are cheap, latches a bit less so but nothing extravagant.

D3/4 (the 5cyl ones) are seemingly more reliable than the D5, twin turbo set up can go wrong, they also seem to have more issues with injectors for some reason.

The later 4 cylinder 2.0 VEA engines seem less reliable, lots of high oil consumption reports

I'd buy another so they must be ok!

I have owned a lot, but then I'm nearly seventy.

My first was a grey Citroen DS19 Safari which saw good use before being sold to one the showmen who visited the field over the road once a year and used our outside tap for drinking water. They were excellent people, working very hard setting up all the rides overnight and always left the field spotless after villagers with less respect dropped their litter all over the place. On Sunday they would respectfully operate all the rides without the usual blaring music which was a bit spooky when you looked out of the window and saw all the coloured lights going round without the familiar noise.

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes ,back in the seventies:

Next was a Citroen CX Familiale bought in 1977 at about six months old. Weld lumps on the A pillars suggested that it might have had a new roof! Part exed because MrsDS hated the Brun Scarabee metalic colour for an X reg silver one with auto box rather than the Cmatic of the first.

There was also a Mk3 Cortina estate for a short while whilst one of the above was off the road.

Next was a  Volvo 740 GLT which got written of when rear ended in a traffic queue and was replaced with another. Both reached 1/4 million miles.

The second one was replaced with another DS Safari. Then came an XM which was swapped on here for another Volvo 940. That of course disappeared to Scotland and was replaced with a Saab 9-5 because MrsDS didn't like the manual gearbox on the Volvo.

You have been very patient so here are the photos.

Thanks for the info. I'd assumed the D5s were the diesel 5 cylinder cars. So the D3 and D4s are the ones to have then?! Actually, looking at @Cento16vs Ovlov above it looks to be badged as D3, so that would figure with the 5 cylinder setup.

Upto about 2014 or 15 I think they are 5 cylinder, when the facelift came in, or roundabout then, they all, including the D5, became 4cyl 2.0 engined.

Pre facelift D2 were a 1.6 4 cylinder, but they are a bit underpowered by all accounts.

Thanks 👍🏻

Will definitely consider a pre-2015 when the time comes.

Unfortunately I have no photos available. My estates have all been working vehicles. Mainly Volvo 240s, ranging from really nice to hanging, I think I have had at least 7 of them. Also two Amazon estates. Did have a Victor FB estate, first car on the road in the 70s, a Mini Traveller (1963 edition).

Currently have a Shooting Brake waiting for nicer weather.
