AnnoyingPentium's Adventures - Fabia Fettling and Other Nonsense

Going back to the stereo subject, I think the best stereo for a Fabia MK1, that doesn't detract from the "2006" look, and fits a standard VW dash, would be this no-name one based on a modern VW design 20210528_170504_065_1200x1200.thumb.jpg.8fe23e409fc941211e59a0045c9cc912.jpg

I'd love to have one of these.

I miss the Ibiza FR with the same engine that my brother had

For a lot less there is a PD100 which is also in the lower tax band IIRC. Good cars too.

I haven't seen those before, but might become a consideration, thanks! :)

Yeah there's no reason at all for me to be dismissive of them. A 1.9TDi PD130 would be brilliant fun! Though costs maybe excess for you based on what you describe re insurance

Hang on scratch that, I'm supposed to be helping convince you to keep this Fabia!

Even the Rover 25 with the 1.1 K-Series is in the £210 VED band, which is silly for a 1.1L! For comparison, my 1.6 Focus is £210 a year and my old 1.6 45 was £235 at the time (would be £250 now)

Since my 25 was a 1.4 and a pre-2001 model, it was buttons to tax in the small engine tax bracket back in 2007! Probably about £120 per year off the top of my head.

Surprisingly it's not that much more, a 1.9 TDI PD100 is a lot cheaper though!

The plan is that the Fabia will stay as the daily for quite some time before being relegated to spare car duties when something else comes in (e.g. another Fabia, because I'm possibly a little bit insane).

The tax for pre-01 cars with wee engines is what I'm paying right now at £170 for the year, soon to be £180 now, so that's not as bad.

I'm always looking at new cars but I'm not pulling the trigger quite yet. :)

True enough, you don't get a Clio estate though. I tried to picture one in my head and it looks pretty fugly. 🤣

You need a vRS in your life Ryan, if you can live with the image that is.

I did 35k a year in my 55 plate black one for 4 years, took it to nigh on 200k miles and it was such a good car, sold it to a mate who's still running about in it.

They suffer a lot less of the niggly problems the 1.2 HTP (Has Three Pistons) engines.

Oooooh look at you being the bad influence. I'll say one thing, I definitely need a yellow one. ;)

I'm doing about 10k a year at the moment but that might be increasing to about 12k given my commute.

I had considered a PD100 since they're cheaper than a vRS and I'd consider doing what Lee (on Briskoda) did with his 100 and begin a search for the pre-FL GT bumper, and then maybe get it mapped.

I like that HTP thing, I also go with Hasn't The Power or Hasn't The Performance. :D

That is probably true. But worse reliability wise.

And I'd rather a standard Fabia over a standard MK2 Clio

Where do you stand on the Roomster? I do like the bonkers design but I admit it's probably unnecessary unless you have kids.

My uncle has one, I'm wondering if I might make him an offer as I think his days of driving may be over soon. He had an appliance white 1.9TDi Fabia Estate before that, which I had my eye on, but I think it got scrapped due to some fault with the wiring loom which nobody could trace. Shame.

I like the Roomster, but maybe not enough to have one on the driveway. I don't have kids but I do have a Springer Spaniel who is getting on a wee bit but he likes the Fabia as he can get in and out of the back nicely since he struggles a bit with jumping into the boot of the Duster at times.

My needs don't exceed beyond something that'll carry three and a Spaniel, or that'll carry the shopping, or crap to the tip. Picking up a Roomster would make a cracking KLEKSHUN FRED though.

I've only ever had space issues with the Fabia and that was because my mate, who is 6ft 6, got in the back behind me. 😂

I like the Yeti more than the Roomster, they carry a bigger pricetag but less fugly. Completely unnecessary unless it's for family transport tho!

I'm 6ft2, my cars may as well be 3 seaters! Even my 6 year old hates sitting behind me, I can only go forwards a few clicks too before it becomes not_nice

I'm 5'11 ish with a longer back so being behind me isn't the worst... unless you're over 6ft or there abouts. It doesn't help that headroom is quite poor in the back of the Fabia, even my head skiffs the roof ever so slightly, and the way the hatch comes down at the back means I don't need a headrest. 😂

In short... There's a reason why I drive it and am not a passenger.

Fabia's are indeed very snug.

6'4 with broad shoulders isn't the best for me.  The back is a no go at all 😆.

A PD100 is the engine a Fabia should have in my opinion. Just suits the car perfectly.

Might be of interest to you too. A friend of mine has a PD100 Fabia Estate and is a massive Fabia licker. The madman has breathed on it and good power can be had from the 100 engines. As his (i'll ask how much he got from the dyno session) is about 230bhp(ish?) while still looking like a bog standard estate. I'll get photos if you want or have a ganders on the Skoda Owners UK FB page for a lad called Ryan 👍.

A good mix of MPGs and power IMO. Plus it'll be able to edge out my Mum's 100hp turbo pez Duster in terms of performance.

I'll post them here.

He reshelled a PD Estate (rotten and badly dented in places) into good HTP Estate shell.  Still need to ask what his recent dyno tune netted him. But I do now remember it being 210bhp at one point. Still plenty of room to go more, but he wants to keep it reliable so it was left at that? Again need to ask.

Here is a few of his photos quickly showing his progress. Still has to put the car back together, but it's now painted.

Okay yeah I know of the guy based on that 02 reg estate there as I was watching his YouTube videos. Isn't he also swapping his Dad's 8v Fabia lump for a 16v from a Polo?

Managed to capture the fault nearly popping up as I was starting the car today... you can see the EML and EPC come on.

Tried the Aldi OBDII reader and it's just saying "LINK ERROR!" once again. It's getting a thorough poking about on Saturday.

Absolutely no issues again last night or today. Got out a wee run across to Muirkirk to pick up my mate and then up the coast to Largs for a poke of chips.

Car drove great, when it's at motorway speeds (eventually) it picks up from 60-70 nicely and can pass well in 5th gear. 41mpg as well all the way up the A78's dual carriageway stretches.

Was down at our unit again.

He had told me it was 210 and its now 230 due to a bigger fuel pump.

I'd of got more photos of the car. But I was busy myself and he wanted to crack on putting his back together after getting it back from paint. The Highland green looks stunning again after its repaint.

But was chuffed that someone might of found his videos useful.

Forgot to ask about the eleccy rear windows. But I vaguely remember he found a car in the scrappies that was fitted with them from new. It was a left hooker from Germany originally that was scrapped. As the UK never got that option.

Only on some Elegances pre-MY2002. The 2.0s got it too but that's because they were all made around the same time and sold from stock IIRC.

Oh I had heard he was getting his sprayed. Bet it looks nice! Must say, I am jealous. Mine has received a few new battle scars and have got a little bit of lacquer damage to my front bumper, so I might need to sort that oot. Gives me an excuse for the pre-FL bumper with the GT lip though... :D

  • 4 weeks later...

Not been much going on in nearly a month. The car had been keeping in better condition than I was. However, this week has been very busy for both myself and the car, with the Fabia covering over 500 miles in a week, a stark change from my usual 190.

Started with a lovely wee trip to Stirling and Callander on Monday with the mates, no issues there. Except that my car has developed a delightful* death wobble at 60-70mph. Either something stupidly simple or stupidly expensive, we shall see.

IMG_20220412_180403_790.thumb.jpg.788f8b261ac29f616283bc34f5682c0e.jpg

^ took this so I'd remember where I parked.

Tuesday was a run to Girvan via everywhere, almost, with a uni pal who had come down from Cumbernauld to sample the "lovely" parts of Ayrshire.

Wednesday was a day where I didn't have to drive, which although nice, isn't nice as a jumpy passenger.

...and that takes us up to today, which is Thursday, I think. Had been meaning to drop off a pair of vent-cup-holder-things to @big_al_granvia and @Flat4 since they're fairly local, but I went via Largs to meet a lassie as well, just to kill some time really. Was lovely meeting you, Al, and of course seeing your fleet was nice too. Only place I think I've ever went to in order to get rid of something to nearly leave with a Focus. I must say, it was tempting. 😂

Tomorrow? Hopefully fuck all, as I cannot be arsed, and petrol isny cheap. Might spend it looking to see if the car has shed some balance weights or something, causing the death wobble, or see what's causing the intermittent cutting out.

Anyway, I think I'll go to my bed now, forking exhausted. 😂

The Focus' coat is currently on a very shoogily peg atm as it won't start and the handbrake has seized :( Will try again with a decent battery but may be an immobilizer issue and if tame mechanic can't fix it, it may turn into bean tins, as much as I want to save it....

Sorry I missed you today - work is very inconvenient most of the time! Cheers for the cupholders :D

Awww, if I could have brought it back with me without having to face the wrath of my Mum (😆), then I'd have taken it on as the spare car.

Gutted to have missed you too. Hope you get some use out of the cupholders though! :)
