Phwoooorrrr - beige, sherk plates, giffer stickers - i think I've just had a little accident.

Last taxed 22 years ago, looks like it's been carefully stored over that time as it looks like it will just drive away.

Another update on the dirty innards, the boot this time.

Very dirty as expected...

IMG_3199.thumb.jpeg.eb77b0fd05e05b0ac54fe73532a1354b.jpeg IMG_3205.thumb.jpeg.b1b9b6ad6e493829c2a6c03c25e35233.jpeg IMG_3201.thumb.jpeg.2b8753b27ce08cdb88aefa3ac7f206f2.jpeg

But as per the rest of the interior, VERY solid

IMG_3207.thumb.jpeg.92a55341df856d68acda1fce332e9015.jpeg

Just some rust in the bottom right corner in the recess section which the bottom of the jack sits in, so applied a bit of Kurust. Looks like water is getting through a small hole by the boot rubber.

Next a bit of tidying of the wiring...

IMG_3208.thumb.jpeg.6651ac9924b52885ed917423b7cbaf4c.jpeg IMG_3212.thumb.jpeg.edd29b8309b7f9cc94b5399a3f3692e6.jpeg

Then onto the trim sections, a bit of before and after...

IMG_3318.thumb.JPG.25f718e308e7692fb5a61d17cfb88a8b.JPG IMG_3320.thumb.JPG.0a2476a97d3ba8ef1957a233fca9b524.JPG

I gave these sections a deep clean, cut new carpet for them, splurged on with the evostik and they look a whole lot better.

Then tackled the grubby and fragile parcel shelf

IMG_3308.thumb.jpeg.832fe7a715b7653df27b75b3711c0258.jpeg

The front section was warped, so I used an offcut of oak flooring screwed underneath to bring it back into shape

IMG_3316.thumb.JPG.78d2173de27e0b80a9a74500b8d45711.JPG

Then ripped off the old grotty covering  and got to work gluing on some new carpet

Not the tidiest job I've ever done but the overall look is a million times better than it was...

One finishing touch...

IMG_3335.thumb.JPG.f65676e15569533ae18a1eb54314afc5.JPG

Might not get chance to do much more this side of Christmas, hopefully I'll tackle the anti roll bar bushes over the break and then make a start on tidying the engine bay.

I think the TC was the base spec on that year.  That had no rear wiper, a 4-speed 'box and the 1237cc engine off of the R12 (albeit turned through 90°).

Did that engine make it into the TC? Always thought the TC was 1108. That 1237 was only available in the GTC model we never got.

Great to see a TL surviving. The trims look like the ones on a Phase 1 TXE we had back in the 80s. Like the R18 TX, I knew they existed but had yet to see one except in a brochure.

Pretty sure R11 TC would have been an 1108cc donk.  I nearly bought a 9TC which was a 1.1.

As far as I recall the 1237 was originally only offered in the 5 in the UK (TR model).  Should be punchy enough though in a car that weighs nowt

Mine was definitely a 1.2, remember specifically looking for that as me and my folks were both pretty sure it was a 1.5 based on how nippy it was.  We were well surprised it was only a 1.2.

Goes to show what keeping the weight down can do.

I must admit to being pleasantly surprised by how nippy the 1.4 feels when it's bouncing along the back roads. Handling feels pretty good too, given that some of the bushes are past their best mind.

A suspension overhaul will be on the cards at some point next year.

To lower or not to lower, that is the question.

Don't would be my vote. You would lose far more comfort than you would gain handling precision.  It's just not that sort of car.

In the real world with the state so many roads are in these days I'd take nice long travel French suspension any day.

With a decent set of tyres and the suspension in good order these cars should handle pretty well anyway.

Don't forget, my GTA is still for sale. 1.4 not nippy enough? 2.0 on fuel injection! Would sir like to purchase the additional spare engine mount kit?

And no, the ride should be French and squishy and compliant yet still accept being thrown into corners with only minimal understeer. If it rides like merde in the corners check the shocks aren't tired, particularly up front.

With 195/45/R15 rubber on mine (with the wide alloys) the skid pan figures are impressive, 0.98G and it really feels like it. It's got a particularly stiff bodyshell.

Not bad cars but the galloping rot got most of them, weird electrical faults got some more and the stupid differential housing design got the rest.

Afternoon all, small update today.

Working from home and it's very quiet so took an extended lunch break to do a few bits.

Replaced plugs, leads and dizzy cap. Definitely made a difference, started quicker and settled to idle with less choke. Happy.

3.thumb.JPG.f1525b5aaf5a14bae294d824921a5581.JPG

Also took the opportunity to clean up the coil and inner wing to see if any horrors lurked under the filth.

Before and after.

1.thumb.JPG.1a708d23586b13d6ea162e0c45ed17cb.JPG 2.thumb.JPG.6145f9a571a3eb88b0b4e16c6446581e.JPG

Nothing there that I wasn't already aware of, you can see from the above images the seam where strut tower joins the inner wing is starting to blow. Will treat it with Kurust for now and see how it develops.

When I got it all the air cleaner ducting was missing, bought some for an air cooled veedub which did the trick, almost. Renault in their wisdom made all the connections for 50mm pipe except the one on the air cleaner box which is bigger. Beer can, grommet and some spare rubber edging can to the rescue.

4.thumb.JPG.311682ab87ad1125bf92f74f0e539f32.JPG

Why is there is always a random cut off wire in old engine bays?

5.thumb.JPG.ffb637b0e6091982c38533ef32842dbf.JPG

Will investigate.

That's it for now, more to follow in the new year.

I have been looking at a set of 15" R25 wheels on FBook, was thinking about 195/50/R15 tyres as the diameter is pretty much the same as I have now.

How is the fit of the 195s in the arches?

Tight. I went look and mine are 195/50/R15- I had 45's on my Cinquecento and that got in my mind.

Fronts not so tight a fit but the rear arches will snag the edge of the tire on a bump+cornering because the suspension bushes are 30+ years old.

That is pretty much the widest wheel you can put on and not have catch or act weird. It tramlines with 195's too. They are a little bit wide for the car, really. Grips really well though. Mine has front and rear suspension both with anti-roll bars off the Turbo.

Some ICE tinkering today. Managed to get a Blaupunkt Renault tape deck from FBook marketplace which was just round the corner from me and cost the price of a pint.

But would it work?

Best way to find out is to rig it up to an old CB radio power pack of course

IMG_3601.thumb.JPG.2f9e1c0887baba09a43d57dc94c840db.JPG

Sorry, should have said Powerpak.

It lives! and it was making noises

IMG_3604.thumb.JPG.1cc1b931ded0666a5e6a0df033158ba6.JPG

And the cassette player works, really well actually. Some dodgy wiring to sort.

And some manky speaker wiring  to sort

Speaker grilles cleaned and refitted

IMG_3609.thumb.JPG.b75e02208f53890dfc8039fc45601fef.JPG

I didn't have the aerial convertor I needed so rigged one up with some ghetto cabling

IMG_3610.thumb.JPG.a2d12c6c853c64a22ecc745d310d1490.JPG

And it all works a treat.

IMG_3611.thumb.JPG.6b592856432420bdf9720aee484a3d3e.JPG

Just need to buy some 80s cassettes now to replace the ones I ditched many moons ago.

As the R11 has no brakes, I think it's tinkering time. Here come the the very retro, past their best axle stands. Update time.

IMG_3621.thumb.JPG.95b732368cbdcfa3bd76a39eeac1a68f.JPG IMG_3620.thumb.JPG.1048b999eb9d64b4536d2de604106856.JPG

The brake pedal goes straight to the floor and just about works when stamped on, so my thoughts turned to master cylinder seal. Thought I'd get a new master cylinder as autodoc had a good deal on a Ferodo one.

Reservoir removed, access is terrible.

IMG_3618.thumb.JPG.3e6bbf50a8fc0597d7ea3fd25b9b889a.JPG IMG_3622.thumb.JPG.bdb727cc6e2de7982b614dcea2bd4c6a.JPG

Broken wires, of course.

IMG_3623.thumb.JPG.680afb000b81bedc4d3dbe7737a0ceb8.JPG

Brake lines were a bitch to get the spanner on but came out surprisingly easy, just takes a long time when you can only do a third of a turn at a time.

IMG_3626.thumb.JPG.231d4694f3f6abbd0c032171f40b2bcc.JPG

Same goes for the nuts holding the master cylinder in place, access was bloody awful, took some effort to get them off, but get them off I did

IMG_3628.thumb.JPG.2804718f08d62096f254417905d1360d.JPG

New vs Old

IMG_3629.thumb.JPG.5dc266a30184df0be8f2525cdef34781.JPG

So just the refit to do. All went reasonably well at first, bottom nut was a bugger but a bit of blutack in the socket held the nut in place so I could get it on, all good - until it came to getting the brakes lines back in place. The one circled has caused me problems.

IMG_3631.thumb.JPG.6c253f7e86c84e8e3de147fdeaa41b60.JPG

It would NOT screw back in, I think I must have tried to tighten it up whilst slightly cross threaded, it just would not play ball, could feel it trying to start but would just bind then spin freely. Bugger. Time to remove it and sort a new one.

Think it might have actually done me a favour as it was badly twisted at the calliper end, it was stuck fast so just twisted, ended up as below...

IMG_3632.thumb.JPG.f509f434768d5c383865c3fadd2606ff.JPG

So, tune into the next update when I learn how to make brake lines...

I didn't bother learning how to make brake pipes, this one was a tenner of t'bay made to size.

Also, it's made from a Cunifer of copper and nickel which is better for reasons.

IMG_3634.thumb.JPG.da909ee57f4cc63564b71623ba875145.JPG

Fitted it during my lunch break.

IMG_3636.thumb.JPG.f72861377269d7164873149c789c0f8c.JPG IMG_3635.thumb.JPG.404552eedd49b1e81c5a10c2039c9af5.JPG

I don't have any brake fluid though. What I thought was brake fluid turns out to be very old 2 stroke oil.

Hopefully will all be sorted this weekend as it looks like it will be dry and storm free.
