What’s your future cars list?

Obviously this isn’t something that normal people do, but we’re in a safe space here, right?

There’s nothing wrong with my current car but if something better (or not) comes up, it’ll be up for sale faster than you can believe.  Money is obviously a limit and my commute is 60 miles a day so fuel economy is important too.  Let’s get on with the countdown!

Honda Insight, it’s like driving the future and should be reliable too.  Unfortunately the only ones for sale right now are 8 grand which is a lot for a car that only has 2 seats

image.thumb.png.8ae328031159f7813123a091edbabaf5.png

Maybe a little more practical and newer too is the Honda CRZ, which seems to be a good steer and I love the way they look.  I went to see two the other week and 4 grand doesn’t buy you a lot.

image.thumb.png.d076f0e0aafa0cf628cb17d4643b239b.png

Vauxhall Ampera.  I know what all Vauxhalls are, but this is quite intriguing and the fact it was an automotive dead end is appealing.

image.thumb.png.165a217f9531c9b0ca3c7b48a5452fa4.png

Audi A2, the acceptable face of Audi ownership.  I’m just not sure about the reliability but it appeals to my inner geek

image.thumb.png.7f1db445944cbe308a713651b7725594.png

Peugeot 206 1.4 HDi, these do something like 70mpg and probably drive quite well too.  Finding a good one could be tough and is it really special enough?  Obviously those wheel trims can get in the fucking sea

image.thumb.png.fd0089b2deb459f6b1b2ddbca5ca22e7.png

Peugeot 205 turbo diesel.  What an absolute hoot to drive and they look great too.  Fuel economy is meh but just look at it
image.png.998af3d5d3d2ee0bfd33faea9b3416fe.png

Renault Twingo, although not a posh one like this; I want an early one that’s dented and has lived a bit

image.thumb.png.cfb470d574da8ae7286e96b65fd411e3.png

What’s on your list?

My future or next car will be a Lexus IS300H or GS300 depending on how much cash I can find down the back of the sofa, I want a large automatic car with reliability, and these seem to be the only sensible option

lexus_is300h_01.jpg

Lexus~GS~(15).jpg

I don't really care about driving dynamics or 'sportiness' or fuel economy or tax costs, I just want something smooth, quiet and cosseting to waft me around at weekends on my way to race meetings.#

Re: the Ampera above

My daughters other half has one and its a really smart and useful car, I've been a passenger loads and driven it a fair bit and they are very impressive, there's not a lot of space in the rear and they are only a 4 seater so not the most practical thing if you have a family, he just uses it for his 20 mile commute to work and I think he's spent £50 in petrol in the last 2 years/10k miles and has zero other costs as he parks it at sainsburys next to his work during his lunch break and charges for free, I don't think you can get cheaper motoring.

Renault twingo and a 60 mile a day commute….. sir you are very brave to even think about that! Well played!

me? I want a pick up truck. The bigger the better. Mrs sutty says I can have one. Which is very bad news . who wouldn’t want a 7.3 v8 turbo diesel? Even Greta likes these…..

I'm very aware that these were only stopped being made a couple of years back, however, I fully intend to keep my MR2 Roadster for a number of years.

At which point, I'll probably move to one of these. I've a couple of friends who have moved up to them and feel they have the same ethos of fun. Very reliable and hopefully don't suffer as much rot as MX5s (time will tell). Unless someone comes out with another cheap mid-engined sports car in which case, that'll probably go ahead, providing it's got a bit of "oomph"

I'm not sure, really.

I don't have a commute, as I live a mile from my work and can work from home when I'm  not walking or cycling to the campus.

I'm debating moving on my Alfa Romeo 147 2.0 twinspark due to getting an E36 BMW 323i. In comparison the Alfa is tinny, crashy, and thirsty!

Ideally I'd like something I could use as a mobile shed. A big, comfy estate car. A Volvo 850 would be perfect, but they're getting a bit silly now, price-wise.

After my Honda hybrid (sold for £1500, not £8000) a Lexus hybrid.

Rx450h would “fit our needs perfectly” but I prefer saloons so IS300.

But they are so F - UGLY.

Lots of old or cheap stuff that I like but I just can’t be bothered with rusty and broken any more.

The Rover 75 is a bit tatty and will be upgraded in the near ish future.  I want a V8.

CLK55 or XJR are the likely targets.  The CLK55/CLK500 seems the sensible German v8 without major engine problems, air suspension, overly complicated electrics etc.  If i was allowed prior to buying a kitchen i would get this - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108216500699?atmobcid=soc3

I also want a Corvette C5 at some point but cannot really justify two expensive two seat sports cars on the drive.

I also really want a JDM Toyota Century, with the v12, lace curtains and proper wing mirrors.  Except I think ULEZ might make that tricky.

In terms of cheaper stuff, Id quite like to go pre 1981 on my next cheap project for ULEZ exemption reasons.  Not entirely sure what.

Currently the cheapest car on the company car list is this 😞:

image.thumb.jpeg.9694e372237a10f799e6766a5979705b.jpeg

So is likely to replace the truck that has been sat unused on my drive for the last year covered in algae, unless I can persuade my boss to get me a van for the cheaper tax 🤔

For  a daily driver the E320 is hard to beat although I keep thinking about an E55.

As for cars I actually really want and do not already own then these are top of the list when my garage is finished:

In the immediate future (given that the Forester's fate is hanging by a thread, almost literally), I'd like to have a crack at a Saab 9-5 estate at some point.

Saab_9-5_Estate.thumb.jpg.5795e17d73d4ae64cfc833455503b44c.jpg

I know at least three serial Saab nuts, one of whom is on her 13th (in 40-odd years of driving) and I'm intrigued at what's so special about them.

Keeping with the Swedish vibe, a decent Volvo XC70 would be on the list too.

Volvo_XC70.thumb.jpg.8e3e5e84f0f7bf146e40d0c07b12d08a.jpg

I missed a low-mile, one-owner example locally a few years back, and it's an itch I'd like to scratch someday.

I loved my tatty 240, and I'm now used to ruinous fuel consumption with the Subaru, so it's maybe not beyond the bounds of possibility. A 'classic' 740/760 could be a goer, too - there's still a couple of well-used examples knocking about the Greater Belfast area.

Although MrsDC hates flimsy little buzzboxes that corner on their doorhandles, I quite like 'em - and a Citroen AX remains something I'd like to experience at some stage, before they're all gone.

Citroen_AX_1997.thumb.jpg.2d81e339ae98d22ac0323c279f99f050.jpg

For sheer fantasy garage desires, I'd have to choose between my two adolescent fixations - an FD series Vauxhall (Victor, VX4/90 or Ventora)...

Vauxhall_Ventora_FD.thumb.jpg.a8e94761e2901e215a25c937d5c15db5.jpg

...or a Mk IV Zodiac Executive.

Ford_Zodiac_Executive_MkIV.jpg.9c08339f474c5eba8b6f3c73232cafd1.jpg

Not exactly common AS fodder these days, but we've seen both an FD and a MkIV Zep turn up on these fair pages lately, so never say never...

However, gazing into the ol' crystal ball, I can see electric becoming more and more likely in the coming decades - and I do have a bit of a soft spot for the current crop of retro-flavoured EVs.

636000581_OpelMantaGSeElecktroMODNEW.thumb.jpg.f2ea1045c16aa09c9545193cbf9f4583.jpg

This Manta A Elektromod got me a bit hot under the collar when I first saw pics of it, even though it's more of a styling exercise based on an original shell than something likely to ever see production - I'd imagine those spindly pillars wouldn't pass muster in modern rollover testing. Still, I'd rock this little honey in a heartbeat.

And if I end up eventually having to pick something as AN ELEKTRIK CAR, I do quite like these Honda Es.

honda_e_long-term-test77.thumb.jpg.e0789cbd1ab342e6788a1d6d1748d96e.jpg

Saw one parked up a few months ago, and I quite like the nod to the original '70s Civic.

Still, remains to be seen whether these things have a long-term future in the second-hand market, or whether they'll end up being bought back for recycling once the battery packs start to die, and will never hit 15-20 year old banger territory.

Realistically? I'd really, really, REALLY fancy a two-stroke Trabant. In fact, I already bought a couple of books to learn what to expect and look out for. It may be a Universal, it may be a P50, it may be a project as long as it isn't too far gone. Most important to me is that it is a two-stroke, not the later Polo engined 1.1.

?appId=21791a8992982cd8da851550a453bd7f&

Lovely! Only thing holding me back is a lack of space atm, Trabants and their parts are still relatively affordable and easy to find here.

Secondly: something -anything- pre war, or at least related to a pre war design (a Pop 103E would be fantastic as well).

The only thing better than a 2-stroke Trabant is a 2-stroke Trabant idling away at full smoke at the front of a traffic queue caused by an Insulate Britain sit-down "protest"

Probably something electric for a daily, don't do many long trips now.

This would be balanced out by something stupid from the 1940s, 50s or 60s. Lack of garage means it can't be too soluble. Still fancy a Minor Traveller and I've just about got over the last Land Rover so that would be back on the list.

Having this 20210913_180727.thumb.jpg.fa0138fc73117a7de5e505de97050653.jpg

And this

20210911_131720.thumb.jpg.8f29d4682c80cf0d69aad8b41def0251.jpg

And a mk1 mx5 in the Pod fleet, I'd like an Astra GTC VXR. But have no plans because not available as an auto.

I really have no plans. Get the mx5 on the road. Service them all

In a few years time when they become cheap, either one of the new Mustangs or a Fiat Panda Cross 4x4 would be my choice of modern shite I'd go for:

The looks of the panda and the running gear of the mustang would be a nice compromise.

I am currently hunting for

1. Everyday car forMrs N. Doesn’t know what she wants but must not be black , not diesel, not manual , not cloth seats. The budget is either under£5000 or “ Let’s get strapped up for £15k finance on a Disco Sport” depending on mood.
2. Car for fussiest daughter . Any colour , must be auto with leather preferably petrol and reverse camera. Must also be perfect, no faults whatsoever - budget c£5k . We’ve looked at a 3.0 X3, a Cactus and a Tiguan so far.

3. commuter for me, only do 5/6 miles there and back , so V8 pref. S Class, CLS maybe a 545i, or possibly a skanky old estate/ 4x4 for practical use , tip runs,IKEA, etc.  Thinking 7/940, Legacy, Frontera, XC90.

These criteria of course change every day for all of us. We,ve been away this week on a mass family holiday , she had a go in Sister-in-laws Golf R estate and asked how much I could find one for, she also saw a Cayenne the same colour as her Boxster and thought that might be a wheeze.

So a cooking model will have to do like this one.

But this is what I'll end up with... another one of these. in this colour.

I already know what the next addition to the fleet will be, unless I win a Roffle in the near future: we're due a new Motability car in November.  We've chosen it, just need to find the money for the Advance Payment.  Or make some room on one of the credit cards.  It'll be a Suzuki Vitara 1.4 Hybrid, in red.

Of the Shite cars available at present, I could easily fancy @cpjitservices's Jag, or @gadgetgricey'sJeep.  But I can't afford them so I'll just have to admire them from the sidelines.

We have white goods on order (Skoda Scala monty python spec). Was due for end of month but with no build slot yet it will probably be next year before it arrives. I would like a winter run around but as always I'm struggling to make my mind up. Something tall & 4x4 or 6 cylinder & smooth.

But knowing me I'll end up with fuck all or something totally different.

I bought a top spec MK2 Honda CRV a few months ago that the wife has basically stolen from me, it's a really good motor so I'm on the lookout for another. Currently driving a Saab 9-3 convertible, but much prefer the driving position and all round comfort of the Honda. They're definitely my thang.

Plus it's coming into the shitey weather now so I basically need* a SUV for my very small commute.

The middle aged man part of me likes the idea of a Mercedes 190 2.5d in taxi-spec beige...

The yob in me wants a Mk2 Focus ST500...

2007-ford-focus-st500-uk-vehicular-traffic-transport-modern-saloon-cars-south-bound-on-the-3-lane-m6-motorway-highway-2A4ACT3.thumb.jpg.62844fde862a959f17415c2fa2d51f62.jpg

Both sides shout "nothing too modern!"

And it has to be an "n+1" car as I am quite happy with my trio of 2009 Focus Zetec S, 2002 TT 225 coupe and 1997 Boxster.

I will have an L322 Range Rover at some point. Either a TDv8 or all out balls to the wall supercharged.

spacer.png

I quite fancy a Sandero Stepway at some point, DCI, in blue.... Might be an option alongside the L322 for the 11 months of the year it's not working?

spacer.png

Notable mentions as possibles.. Vauxhall Omega, Citroen C5, C6, BX, Peugeot 406, Land Rover Discovery 3 (probably an either/or to the RR)
