2006 Toyota Land Cruiser - Still Here, Somehow.

If you'd got a bush to guide the drill bit onto the centre line of the thread...... Think JimH knocked something up a while back for someone with a broken stud on a Saab. I've got a lathe in the garage. Work out some dimensions, might be able to help.

That really is a bollock crunching turn after the effort already put in fella.......... my gf just asked why I loudly exclaimed OH FFS - even she understood the pain in the arse this will be.

Best of luck

This, my hearts out for you mate 😢

I was about to say I've had Vauxhall petrols (well the ex has) that looked like that on the inside and they carried on fine until other natural Vauxhall causes sent them off to asm

I showed my wife this, she's calmed down now. I've calmed down myself really.

All I can think of is that either the stretch bolt was past it and has been out a few times, or the torque wrench is fucked. Well it's well fucked as I've chucked it.

Thanks everyone but I'm sending it to the garage, at least then someone can fix the air con 😂

Doesn't the aircon need the engine at least ticking over for it to work though!

You have my sympathy. If your garage takes it on I doff my cap to them - I suspect the ones I use would look and the broken stud, then the valve gear, and then tell you how cheap a new dacia is.

Was doing some man maths recently. A registered but unused Ssangyong Rexton costs about £36k.With a 7 year warranty. A car of similar size, off road ability, towing capacity etc. to the Land Cruiser in question. Write the value off over 7 years, that's about 5 grand a year. That's being uber pessimistic, 7 year old Rextons are selling for good money at the moment. Not being a smart arse at all, I've met St Jude and feel his pain, but I reckon he must have spent a year and a halfs worth of Rexton already. And it's stuck on his drive in bits. Good luck fella.

The guide for removing the remnants is great - but my1st thought was that those bits are buried a sodding long way down there.... so it's a strip down, gaskets etc.... you may as well look at a cleanup and top-end rebuild while you're in there...... not sure if that is a silver lining or not TBH

What was the specified torque setting for that bolt?

I think 22nm. Looks like the wrench was set too high if looking at the picture at around 29/30nm.

Used this video to check.

26+4, can't quite make it out.

Right so there's a guide by Bailey's in Australia that is referenced a lot, and in the document it states 25Nm. That's what I went for. I've found out since that the manual states 22Nm.

I took this as 25Nm.

The way it's looking is that the head is coming off, as the swarf is going to be a bitch in there. The cams would be out anyway. Everything on that engine, other than the sludge and the injectors, seemed fine. So I wouldn't want to stomach a massive rebuild, just enough to keep it reliable. Knowing my luck though the garage will have the head off and find that the piston is cracked.

The thing is with the Rexton and the Land Cruiser is that the Rexton isn't as nice of a car in terms of materials. Capability wise they're rated for 3.5t while my Land Cruiser is 2.8t. But the Rexton suffers from rot on the rear arches and parts availability isn't too good. Bloke at work has one and we were comparing them, and if his Rexton broke spectacularly he'd probably get mine. Plus these Land Cruisers are twice the price of a Rexton.

It's got to be fixed, it's going to be fixed, just kinda wish a £1,600 job stayed there and wasn't going to double through a fucking bolt.

Plus, as well, it's now got a great EGR gizmo on there, so it's going to drive superbly when it's together.

You have no luck with Toyota 4wds. Oh god. I really feel for you but I've no idea how you've just thrown a load of matches and a petrol soaked rag at it yet.

You know, the thought just occured to me.

When I was battling the RAV4, my phone camera smashed. About a year ago.

Now I'm battling a Land Cruiser, I've done the same thing again.

All good stuff, but how old is his Rexton? The 2017 onwards model is now on its 2nd facelift and looks pretty smart inside, to me anyway. Not cheap anymore though, with the top model over 40k.Sort of fancy one myself, hence the man maths.

His is 2005, so same age as my Land Cruiser. They all look smart but he showed me that the fake wood in his is peeling, as mine is factory fresh. Plus SsangYonGg have gone bump so parts aren't going to be good

That's a lot clearer image👍. I'd agree now 21+4.

Good luck getting it sorted. Painful financially etc but should be a sorted car for many years once done.

Thanks, for a moment I thought I had fucked it!

If it's that much, not worth weighing that engine in and just purchasing a good one? One that isn't sludged up and would need stripping regardless..

Maybe, I mean I never even got the sump pan off today so the sludge could be just in the rocker or at least minimal.

I've found a specialist on Google, I'm waiting to see if anyone knows someone who's good with diesels near Stourbridge, and I'll weigh it up then.

22nm is 16 foot pounds - barely more than finger tight.

I can tell you now, those bolts weren't finger tight coming off. They were on tight.

29 minutes ago, RoverFolkUs said:

Probably just unfortunate that the bolt had been used one too many times, cant imagine a 3nm margin of error could snap it.

I was joking when I said it wants pulling apart to get rid of the sludge completely, I really should shut up 😂 maybe it was my fault tempting fate 😂

Ive got another conversation going on with the lads on the Land Cruiser forum. This has happened to another member but he managed to rescue it with a lot of patience and sharp tools. It's a free fix if I can do it, so I'm going to give it a go as it's not involving drills or shit like that.

But, there's confusion over whether these bolts are a one use item and whether they are 22Nm, 21.6Nm, or 25Nm. The repair manual states 21.6Nm but doesn't say it's one use, the Bailey's document states 25Nm but doesn't say they're one use, then another source say they're 25Nm for new bolts and then 22Nm for a reused bolt which should only be used twice.

I feel a bit better that I haven't fucked up, I'd be mortified if it was a fuck up on my part. But I researched this job, watched the videos, got the PDFs, asked people who did the job and no one has mentioned these bolts being one use.
