Cobblers's VW T25 Syncro Doka

fitted the poly bushes to the radius rods, I've seen loads of horrors where the hole in the body was worn, or the adjuster threads are rotten etc. Luckily mine is perfect on both counts! I also spread the "v" out when putting it all back together so that it wasn't putting so much pressure on the tca bushes

It's driving a bit strange since new bushes, so with all that work done I checked the tracking:

Yep! that needs a tweak!

I got the arch cut bits cleaned up, painted, covered in dinotrol and fitted the spats to cover it up:

They look decent, took a little tweak to get them to fit where I was putting them, and it was very nerve-racking taking a powerfile to them as they were a flipping fortune!

Took it for a good run to check if they scraped, and I couldn't get them to.

One for you @twosmoke300 😄

Roof tent is coming off tomorrow so I can take it to get all the front end alignment sorted out properly, the tracking is OK but the camber and caster are all to cock.

It also needs the prop sorting again, the bearing fit loctite I used to make up the slightly loose UJ bearing fit into the housing has failed. FFS!

It nearly let me down this morning - A few splutters not far from home turned into running like an absolute bag of shit 8 miles later, doing 15mph flat out. Good job it was 6am sunday morning!

It got me in to work, but only just! I had to wind it up to my parking spot on the starter motor.

Had a poke round and soon spotted that the rotor arm was a mess, blackened, the epoxy had cracked and the end wiper bit was loose too. Dizzy cap was a mess too. What a load of shit! They're only 1600 miles old, if that!!!

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, after a full dose of "replacing all the ignition components" it still wouldn't run right, and in fact got worse and worse every time I tried to start it. Misfire seemed to mainly be on 1 and 2 as when I pulled the leads off them, not a lot happened.

I was at a loss, but clutching at straws I fired a load of the iso alcohol down the airbox and it started up fine! FFS!

I took a fuel pipe off to check for fuel flow it fired a load of air and petrol at me. So despite the gauge showing 1/4 of a tank (and the fact that I'd put £30 in the day before) it was empty. A jerry can of fuel in and it was running good as gold, infact better than before because it was definitely overdue those ignition bits.

Anyway with the MOT passed last week, I went on to fix some bits that should definitely have been picked up on the mot 😅

The prop that I'd replaced the UJs on last year seemed to be giving a bit of driveline vibration, so I checked it and as I was worried about, a couple of the bearings were a loose fit in the yokes. I stuck em in with bearing fit, but they have fretted loose and the whole rear joint could be moved up and down 3mm!! So I bit the bullet and ordered a brand new, heavy duty propshaft made with standard parts with grease nipples etc:

Then I went at the front inner CV joints as they've been very baggy for some time, plus the boots were some dodgy diy replacements.

And I made a mount for the spare wheel (the bigger tyre won't fit under the back seat). It's just a quick thing chucked together with stuff I had to hand:

2120519552_2022-07-0916_05_32.thumb.jpg.ad58e970d978adec1a8d28d94f1d9cc3.jpg

I've since swapped it over to mount the wheel on the drivers (near) side as on the first drive I was reminded how much you need a good "over the right shoulder" view when driving a LHD vehicle on our roads.

Also I decided to put a stereo in it. There was a bit of a cockup on amazon and I managed to buy one of these new Blaupunkt Bremen "80s" styled bluetooth head units for £260+ tax from amazon EU, it ended up at £310 landed which is less than these stereos seem to be selling for 2nd hand. It looks nicely at home.

My speakers however, are a little less subtle.

I've had these on the shelf for years, bought them when I thought they were being discontinued - they're just perfect for a noisy van as they're really efficient and kick out way more bass than they have any right to.

The old doorcards were a bit grotty, so I remade these from 6mm ply. Rather than carpet them (which would look out of place IMO) I got some UPOL Raptor tinted to match the front doorcars (RAL7005 Mouse/Navy Grey)

I need to get some less shiny hardware for them, or just put these in the media blaster to take the polish off.

I have said it before and I will say it again. This thing is just too good.

Those spats finish off that corner without ever knowing anything was done. Door cards look ace in raptor. You would think they were metal or plastic. How well do you think it will last on the wood? I have a couple of items in my van that could do with some sort of paint/covering so this could be the trick.

I must have missed it but do you have the full fox kit on this?

Also I love those stereos but are they charging a bit of a premium to get something that look period correct? I have seen them fitted before but know nothing about them but keep seeing them mentioned?

Supposedly the raptor works fine on wood, I used a few coats of 2k grey primer on them to start with but mainly to get the colour "something like" as I wasn't sure if one bottle of raptor would be enough. Turns out it was plenty - its 2k so once you've put the hardener in you have 30 minutes to use it, unfortunately I had to chuck half the bottle away!

It has the fox remote-reservoir fully adjustable extended travel shocks and gowesty lift springs on, a previous owner fitted it all at massive expense. It's good, but I don't think I could personally have justified £3.5k on it!!

The stereos are definitely well overpriced for what they are - the sound quality is decent, build quality decent but they're nothing special, other than simply looking the part. I had considered buying an old period correct stereo and modifying it to add aux-in and bluetooth, but even rough old blaupunkts are £100, plus £80 for the bits, half a days work etc ..

Good to know, will have to get some. Should wear better as well as I was only going to paint my stuff.

I thought I could make out a reservoir in the one pic. I can imagine them being good but pricey?

Yeah not worth your hassle I can see that. Got one of the Aux Bluetooth adaptors on the way for my standard Ford unit. Should be was easier to install on my new unit however.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've just come to change the battery on this (I noticed the one fitted is too tall, and from 2015..)
The battery fitted seemed to be an American type of battery - I spent a lot of time over there when I was younger and recognised the "style"
Sure enough, there's a faded label on the side with a Reno, Nevada zip code, a partial name and a partial phone number...
Googling all the parts of these things brings up a 47 year old mans name and all the details match...

1846021169_2022-07-3011_29_28.thumb.jpg.bc098c2e8553bf81a8645ffb12868c22.jpg

So it seems that the van (or the battery at least) probably spent some time in the Nevada - that would explain why it's packed with a very orange, dry dust inside and externally has that nice "dry" patina you don't get on vehicles that spend a lot of time wet. And it also explains how the KFG muds that came on it were absolutely hard as nails, and why there's quite a few imperial fasteners been used on the exhaust and such.

Looks like I'm going to have to do some digging!

It’s always a joy to see this getting lavished with care :). Did you sound deaden the doors whilst you were there? It made a big difference to the sound of the speakers in my T25. Also, since you’ve got loads of space under the seat, they’d sound even better with a sub and a high pass filter!

It's costing me a fortune but it doesn't feel like a waste, it's fundamentally such a good shell and I really enjoy driving it.

I didn't sound deaden the doors, but they really do need it as the metal on the side panel resonates like a steel drum 😅 I have got a load of fancy sound deadening pads somewhere, but I've got a feeling they're in the attic of our old house that some friends are staying in at the moment.

Oh, I got some less gaudy speaker grilles:

Well, the plot thickens a bit with regards to where this truck has been.

Digging through the 8 pieces of paper I got with the van (that's all the history unfortunately) I found the export paperwork from Sweden, and it seems to show an export date of 03/2006:

1130594215_2022-07-3120_55_34.thumb.jpg.5848606ff93a36deeb14f6573915c2f1.jpg

Which, along with the dust and the battery with the Reno address on it, I was convince it went to the USA.

I tried to do a Carvertical check to see if there was any service records / inspection history from America, but whatever data source they use has nothing whatsoever for this van, not even the UK mots or owt. I even tried searching by VIN as well as the reg plate.

In the end I tried a CARFAX check as they're more US based and claimed to have some records for the VIN:

image.thumb.png.aee55547e69021454ae4909f314e5dc0.png

So, nothing in the USA at all. God knows how it ended up with an ill-fitting battery bought in 2015 in Reno.

Another thing is that it seems to have been left Sweden in 2013, but was only registered over here in 2016 - maybe it just stood around for years? Perhaps it was imported by someone who brings a lot of VWs in and they pinched the battery off something they'd imported from the USA, I suppose I'll never really know.

I do know the swedish reg plate though - DOM201, and I'm wondering if there's any online MOT history check type things over there. There seems to be one promising service where you can get the last owners address if you text the reg to 72503 (https://www.transportstyrelsen.se/sv/vagtrafik/Fordon/fordons-agaruppgift/Sms-tjansten-vem-ager-fordonet/), but obviously you'd need a Swedish phone to do this. Perhaps @Dyslexic Viking knows someone 🤞?

The picture looks like a Swedish registration certificate? And I don't think this one has been in the US as Sweden has a lot of imports of older American cars, so a previous owner probably took the battery from an imported car from the US that's my theory. And the dust can be gravel roads? As Sweden has many of these.

And I tried using my Norwegian phone number to send a text to the Swedish registration office that you have posted here, but it didn't work. So maybe some of our Swedish members can help?

Well, the info I wanted was staring me in the face - The bloody registration document. I got google translate out, and what I thought was the address where you'd send it off, was actually the owner:

image.png.ffb9cb4b868b91512b10d911af1410ea.png

"Byggservice" = Construction service

"Ånn Aktiebolag" roughly translates to "Ånn town corporation" so it was sort of owned by the town of Ånn,

However, Ånn is such a tiny little town with just 70 inhabitants , and it didn't actually change owner according to carfax from 1999 to 2013, so hopefully someone remembers it?

Two 4wd VW vans? Why not buy yet another.

1374058510_van03.thumb.jpg.f2516f1e3d9e7fc356e5db140053a620.jpg

Bought sight unseen from Edinburgh with some quite upsetting pictures, the price was right.

I was sort of convinced it was a scam advert, it was very cheap and the ad text seemed a little "off" but when the seller (who has owned it since 1998) showed me his spreadsheet detailing every penny he'd ever spent on it my mind ws put at ease, especially when he pointed out the 5 new "Tigar" tyres that have plenty of tread left. These are 17 years old and are falling apart.

I've always wanted another panel van t25 after regretting cutting mine up to put windows in years ago, and I've got a soft spot (soft fucking brain!) for a syncro, and this is both.

Seems un-buggered-about-with. It's a 1.6TD, which are pretty bloody agricultural so that might not stay (PD/1.8t?)

This will be a bit more "hands off" to start with - Our very own Ceri will be collecting it and deliverying it direct to DST who did the welding on the last one. This needs much the same (and more):

Dan is booked up into next year, but he seems OK with storing it there for a while. I'll pop up and we'll have a look over it and decide exactly it's fate - if it will make a very good van, then we'll make a very good van out of it. If it's too sore to be perfect then we'll make it safe and solid.

Please form an orderly queue for the wheeltrims.

Um... actually could I have the wheel trims?  They look fscking awful on there, but aren't a million miles off what my camper would have had.  Against a mostly white 80s coachbuilt backdrop they would look rather less out of place I reckon.

Assuming they'll fit.  The wheels on this thing having quite a chunky dish on them has made finding something that fits a challenge.

Nice buy 👍  I've still got a new turbo from mine which I ended up scraping 😳 shame as I loved that bloody van, glad I never seen that one or would have been tempted for sure.

I finally got my old doka started after a new ignition module, a little pez down its neck and it started first time running from a can, the fuel in its tank looks rather like Syrup,.    Only problem is it's ticking over around 4k revs and won't drop ☹️ more investigation required.

That’s lovely, if a bit crispy in places. Very jealous of anyone with 2 T25s, even more so that they are both synchros!

The person to really be jealous of is S.J Baxter of Brickwerks Ltd, who has seen this thread and put in the order for his second yacht 😄

My dad had a few of these vans and they were constantly breaking down and unreliable. But they look amazing and hold a lot of appeal, maybe for their very individual looks.

Yeah, they're a bit needy. I genuinely can't explain why I like them so much? I just get a good vibe when driving one, and find them just that right level of  "not too complex to work on" but "not too prehistoric" to drive every day.

That made me snort. I try not to think how much money he’s had off me over the years!!

This is it for me - had older (supposedly cooler?) VWs that were  just too slow and agricultural to use everyday, whereas these keep up pretty well with modern traffic. But they are free of complex electrics,  and the engines are all basic, so they are easy to work on and fix. Parts are also pretty easy to get next day (apart from the current shortage of main bearings for engine rebuilds). Strangely practical. All round could springs also means it rides quite well for a van…..

And not forgetting that weird feeling of sitting over the front wheels,.  My old van had 340k on it when I disposed of it.

The first time I rode in one was so strange hanging out front. In fact, I think I have just worked out why I like them.

When I was at school, about 15/16? an older brother of a mate of mine had a red Multivan Carat, when the other 19/20 year old lads had fiestas and stuff. He used to go camping in it, pick girls up and tackle them thoroughly in comfort, pack a load of band gear into it and whatnot. All the while I was pretending I wanted to drive fast in an XR2 or whatever.

I remember we all went out somewhere together and I was sat in the back of this van while we drove along the motorway, I had the table out in front of me and a bottle of beer in my hand, the air conditioning was on and it just felt pleasurable and I think from that point on I just associate them with good times.

And you thought:

"Now if only I could somehow sleep outside of this thing, like on the roof, this would be the perfect vehicle"

I associate them with breaking down on the Kessock Bridge, breaking down in Germany, breaking down on the Isle of Lewis, breaking down on the Drumossie brae.

In ten years or so of owning these vans and maybe 40,000 miles, I've only once been stranded. A recently fitted, mint 30K mile gearbox decided to just lose all drive completely out of the blue. They've always limped me home, other than that. But good grief have I spent some weekends stressed out to fuck trying to lash one back together to get me to work on monday morning.

Also if it was 4wd, but much more expensive to run, repair, worse on fuel, slower, noisier, etc.
