Decided to see if the old carb was any good.

Found the 2bbl cast iron manifold (oem) which isn't too bad, despite having been sat in water.

The original Carter BBD, as fitted from the factory.

Someone's been inside it before. They used an entire tube of RTV which all got picked off. A good number of the smaller ports were blocked.

I thought I had lost it but it is missing #42 and #43, the non return valve ball bearing and spring for the accelerator pump. The drilling for the fuel draw is clogged solid and there's no sign of the ball having been in there in recent history.

The rest appears to be present and correct. This one might work.

I reassembled the carburetor for now. Upon using the dimples created by the channels in the carb I aligned the gasket but nothing fit correctly.

Nope, turns out some clever soul installed the gasket upside down and backwards. Half the idle circuit was open to atmosphere- that must have pissed fuel everywhere, hence the gallons of RTV.

If it's too difficult, ask an adult

I went rummage to see if I had the gearbox linkages for the car; I do not.  However, I did come across a couple gems, the door lock set (no trunk lid lock but hey ho).

Predictably those are rusted solid so a bit of oil on them and that can soak in.

Also found the screen wash pump.

It was also locked solid and full of dirt, both in the case, in the motor and in the pump.

A little bit of gentle persuasion and it again pumps.  That's a saving.

I bought some odds and ends to fix my door hinges with. Every time I would open the door it would close on me and that was beginning to become tiresome.

20220821_120634.thumb.jpg.5a8015fb8025fd9c16637d3aed34de69.jpgCut the bolt to length and drilled it out through the center.

That fitted inside the hinge with the roll pin. The spring then holds the arm against it and the detents hold the door in place.

The action is quite nice now, all greased up.

is the glass for these as easy as the chief

No, this is particular blue stuff. I have new glass for some of it; the rear window was in good shape.

I'd like to get a replacement windscreen because this one's a bit pocked and scratched but that'll have to wait.

New ignition pieces this evening.

New distributor cap, coil, rotor arm and amplifier module.

Not bad. Runs better now so I'll call that good. Needs another oil change to flush the last of the watery gunk out.

I've got a gearshift linkage on order from a breakers in Washington. Hopefully that fits.

Phil

3:35pm: Scheduled rain storm begins.

3:43pm: Rain stops so generator and angry grinder to cut the bolt to approximately the right length.

3:46pm: Attacked by wasps who have built a nest in the A pillar.

3:47pm: Scheduled rain storm continues.

Given up with that for now, got a PTA meeting tonight so it'll be too late to continue by the time we get home.

Like the contrast between the tiny single-choke carb and the complex equal branch-length headers!

Looks can be deceiving; granted, that's the smallest carb I have that'll fit on the engine, but it's actually a twin barrel design with a common choke.

It'll flow 223 CFM. The BBD that was on it from the factory is rated 193 CFM despite being a physically larger device.

The Holley that leaks, 600 CFM. I think this engine should be somewhere in the 350-400 CFM range for actual draw, with stock intake, exhaust, cam and valves retaining the stock redline of 5500 RPM.

Horses for courses; however yes, I agree that it does look rather small sat up top there yes.,.

I hate doors.

I managed to get the roll bar wedged in at a stupid angle and couldn't get it to move to the right place. So, I resorted to taking the hinge off, beating it to the right place then putting it all back on.

Naturally now the door doesn't fit right.

But, they both stay open now.

1 out of 2 ain't bad.

Just weld the doors shut and jump in, Dukes of Hazard style!

I'm sitting here looking at the picture and trying to figure if the car would look good painted in Go Mango.

I really don't think so

I regularly have ‘those’ weeks!

Do you know what the missing part looks like and could you make one?

Yes and yes.

They're remanufacturing them, too. Apparently it is a common partb to column shift 727 gearboxes, across multiple body styles and years.
