I went digging in boxes and found more things.

Bingo, the carburetor that goes with the intake manifold on the engine. Nice. Needs a clean, it's full of spiders and crap.

That's money I didn't have to spend to get it running.

No idea why the choke is missing though.

I got a little antsy this afternoon so got busy with the engine crane.

Well, we have +0.040" pistons- from something 32v and hemi. No clue there.

One pot is a bit mediocre. That's been machined, too. Something's stuck in the rings, it's scoring the bore.

Wedge heads. Apparently these are halfway decent. One valve is stuck open and they're all a bit rusty. I think it was stored with the plugs out for a long while.

Finally, the gearbox, "redone". That doesn't say redone to me...

I lifted one bank of pistons out.

Remember how I said I was concerned they'd put a rod in backwards?

They did.

#7 and #8 pistons were transposed.

Also, lots of fod. You can see the little twinkly bit above the top ring.

Going to pull the rings off and clean them, check the gaps and reassemble.

Tidy up the engine and reassemble, do the gearbox seals, then drive it. That engine will last for years even if it isn't perfect. Gears '(auto???) will not leak and if they are ok should last too !

Unless you want perfection .

Yeah, for now that's what I'm looking to do.

Plan right now is to throw this back together, clean the carb, chuck some oil in it and see if it'll start on the floor.

So I assume the Pontiac restoration is officially finished, and this is the new project?  Looks like you have your work cut out for you!

BTW, do you still have the Renault?  I'd love to see that restored to it's former glory.

No, the Pontiac has reached "good enough to drive and do things occasionally to", and while it still needs work it's not a case it needs to be in pieces every weekend.

I still have the Renault, it's parked around the back of the garage. It would be nice to see done but I have someone interested in buying it so for now it's just sitting resting (under cover, even!)

I found my calipers, put a new battery in and checked the big ends on the crank.

All a uniform (thrust and slack faces) 2.125"-2.129".

Wow.

So the crank is good on that, I didn't feel like fighting the main bolts tonight, l will pull those and check the mains too (and bearing fitment) another day.

Going to try to to the DMV and get the title put in my name tomorrow.

Cleaned up a couple pistons in the ultrasonic bath. Cleaned the rings up, checked them for gap and they're well outside limits. This engine was 40 thou' over BEFORE they honed the shit out of it, so a couple pots are like rattling a stick in a trash can.

You can see how loose they are. Oh well. Piston slap it is! At least it won't have rod knock.

Rods are the right way round now.

Finally, why RTV a piece of scrap metal into a rusted out core plug? They're cheap enough to replace.

What a bodger! Why the phrase “rebuilt” in any advert turns me off.

Any clue as to what the (4 valve) pistons are from?

Turns out they are not- on this engine the wrist pin is offset slightly to one side, so in order for the pistons to be able to be turned round for each bank, they just put the recesses in both sides.

Economy.
