You're thinking of Chumly.

I'm also off work that weekend so I shall figure out lodgings in order to attend.

Possibly, can't have been to a FOTU yet then!

Still a day trip though, or a kip on dad's sofa but Phoenix will be lonely if I don't come home...

Could have a nice svm jaunt down the A1

I do hope this goes ahead. I don't think my Mercury or Oxford will fit in. All being well I'll borrow my Dad's Magentis and park in the normal carpark.

Edit: Does not fitting in apply to this show or is that just Chumly?

The Mercury will be fine.  @flat4alfa turned up in a massive Yank land yacht last time.

I think you've been at a FOD weekender that coincided with FOTU but not the event itself.

FOTU has chod parking, visitor parking, and a small invitational concours.

Yes it did, I was at the fod when you all came back after @triggerwon, was a fab atmosphere! I remember now

@wuvvum

This is the Country Squire, slotting in next to an Escort.  This was one of the rare photos where there wasn't a swarm of folks around it

The year before it was an '93 Rover 420

Before that, a '62 Vauxhall VX 4/90

Therefore, bringing the Mercury is ideal 😎

That county squire is hilarious.  The passenger compartment (front and rear doors) is barely any bigger than the MK2 scrote parked next to it, it's just that the bit from the A-pillar forwards and the C-pillar backwards appears to have been stretched to nearly double what a european car would be.  It just looks so out of proportion.  Still, Americans don't really do "subtle" do they...

Much wider though, I had 8-up in that LTD wagon: 3+3+2.  The rear deck is vast, you need to climb in, rather than reach in.  The engine is 400ci (6555cc)

So much nicer to drive compared to that mate's Escort Ghia though.  It looks hefty but doesn't feel like it to drive, you know where it is on the road and the ancient steering box isn't as vague as you might expect, also having under 4 turns lock-to-lock.  Finding a parking space is fun though.

This ad shows how much longer the front doors are compared to the rear, also notice the deep screen rake

A style of its time.  I love the old thing, must borrow it again sometime

It is vast but surprisingly usable.  A mate back up north has (or had, haven't been in touch in about ten years now) an Aussie LTD from the same era which was every bit as green as this one is red.  Basically same car save for being RHD and having a slightly different dash design.  I tried to buy it half a dozen times!

Seeing this one was a nice trip down memory lane.

Interior is the best bit though.

Yank cars from that era just did "comfy" like nobody else.

Used to see a few of these in episodes of "Kojak", playing second fiddle to his Buick Century 455.

They certainly didn't do "tasteful" though.

Think it's just down to what the tastes were in the areas in the period, I could happily live with it being a bit in your face for the comfort levels provided.

Still very much torn on what vehicle to bring.

*IF* I've got it roadworthy by then...BX.  Let's face it, FotU is basically a celebration of the colour beige...and the car is aggressively beige inside and out.  She's not been on the road in a decade though so I could still have a lot of work to do.

Invacar...just because they're about as unexceptional from their time as you could get.

Xantia...probably not.  Seem to remember there were a few there last time, and mine is just so damned scruffy these days because of the state of the paint.

Van... definitely in the running.  Merc T1 campers used to be pretty common, but they're just about extinct these days.  Given the current situation having a space I have control over I can retreat to if needed doesn't sound a bad idea either.

Dunno!  May well end up being a coin toss on the day...

It will be two years passed, so I'd say bring along the Invacar again

But your point about the Merc being a retreat is a very good one

True...TPA is a very different car to when she was last there too.  She had barely done any miles back then and was still largely held together by duct tape and hope!

I guess the ultimate would be to trailer TPA with the T1 - a retreat with home comforts and something to tootle round in as well.

I think potentially seeing if anyone I know would like to tag along as an additional driver would be easier.  For all she's got all the acceleration ability of a cruise liner she isn't a hard vehicle to drive (well...once you've stopped swearing at the dogleg first year anyway).

Wouldn't really want to stick someone else in the BX as she would still be largely unproven by then so the potential for gremlins is too high in my mind.

I would vote for the van. An Invacar has been there before, but I'd be more surprised if a T1 motorhome had.

I'm deliberating on bringing mine for that reason, although the temptation to bring the Stellar again is still strong....

If you brought yours that would definitely encourage me towards taking the van too.  I've wanted a look at it for years, and getting a photo of them together would be great.  Even if your workmanship puts mine absolutely to shame!

There were two motorhomes last time that I remember, a late 70s Toyota and a VW T25.  Quite possibly a pre-T25 era VW Transporter too...though they're so ubiquitous that I'd never remember seeing one!
