New owner's modifications

Why would someone in their 70s do this? I fear we can never really plumb the depths of the human psyche.

There are few people as enthusiastically invested in poorly modifying cars with stick on tat as bored giffers looking to relive their youth.

The Ferrari angle is unusual though, it's usually stick on "chrome" and fake wood interior trim.

Perhaps hung around in discos and told young girls he had a Ferrari parked outside ?

There was a elderly chap around Lincoln who used to frequent student nightclubs, although he had a yellow MG ZR, and a yellow Mk1 Megane convertible once the former presumably broke - I'm not sure enough alcohol exists in the world to turn either of these into Ferraris.

I've been fortunate in that most of my vehicles haven't survived long enough after my ownership to suffer this fate/I've not seen them since, although I bet my Megane went downhill quickly. The one car belonging to our family we saw for sale again was one of our old PT Cruisers that looked largely the same as we sold it.

I went to a gig with a mate a couple of years back, after it had finished we fancied a few more beers so ended up in a nightclub - I'm only just turned 50 but we felt bloody awkward ! Thankfully, we managed to stay off the dance floor and got stuck into some rubbish overpriced beers :)

(the Ferrari was in for a service that day)

Selling cars you care about is nerve wracking. When I sold my Sierra I tried very carefully to weed out the banger racers and drifters who wanted it. Luckily it went to a guy who drove from Nothern Ireland to Essex (twice) to look at it and collect all the spares I'd hoarded.

It's to become a tarmac rally car, and I'm happy with that having seen his previous builds.

If only barryboys was still alive

That's actually fairly mild compared to some of the cars that were posted on BB back "in the day" (not actually that long ago).  It looks like it's crashed through Halfords, but nothing that isn't fairly easily reversible.

What amuses me most is that people selling their "improved" versions of cars seem to think they'll get more than a standard one as they've "done so much and spent so much money".  Actually, it'll likely make absolutely sod-all money.  If the devaluation is more than the time/cost of putting it back to standard, it might even be worth buying.

Then attack the stick on bits with an axe.

That said, with a start price of £3k, I can't see anyone actually bidding.  What's a factory standard one worth these days?

After my first MX5 was written off it reappeared after a while. When I saw it for sale it was largely as it left me(well, repaired) except for a load of stick on fake chrome tat in the interior. I think the plumber on here had it for a bit.
I must admit I’ve put a front spoiler on my wife’s Civic and might put side skirts and rear spoiler on yet.

I did sell a lovely e34 525 in 2010. I’d bought it for £250 and sold it for £500 iirc- and thought I’d really cut the grass.

Saw it 3 months later with every window and lens smoked and the bbs x spokes were replaced with tsw venoms- although that might be just my imagination.

It always amuses me to think that anyone is taken in by these ridiculous "replicas". In the recent past I've seen a Chrysler 300C doing an absolutely wank impression of a Bentley, and a Hyundai Coupe inexplicably wearing Tesla badges. Does this kind of thing get the girls or something?

I hate anything fake. Right down to lino that is meant to look like tiles. I don’t mind lower models getting body kits from the sporty models but don’t put the badges on.
Tend to find any fakes, like MR2 Ferrari reps, have more Ferrari badges than originals. I think there is an MR2 kit with a few 355 touches that isn’t bad.

Here is what my old mexibug looked like under my ownership. A few tasteful mods (I particularly liked the front spoiler) but pretty low key.

And here is what it looked like a couple of years after I sold it.

To be fair it is a beetle so totally to be expected really, i'm surprised it doesn't have a roof rack covered in tricycles.

Actually when I saw the pics a couple of years ago (I sold it 8 or so years ago I think) i thought  they had ruined it but looking now the changes are not that different to mine. each to their own I suppose.

My ambition when I was 17 was to buy an Escort Cosworth and revert it to appear like a base spec 1.4. I never did it, and now I realise it would have been impossible as it wasn't even built on an Escort's underpinnings.

I suppose the modern equivalent of that would be to buy an MG ZT 260 V8 and revert it to a Giffer spec Rover 75 1.6 in appearance.

Hello all

I've been looking for my old MR2 for a few months now after discovering that it is has a MoT after a number of years. Today I found it on ebay and it has changed somewhat! I wasn't perfect when I sold it but at least you didn't need a bag over your head to drive it.

I've posted the ebay add in the ebay tat thread and it was well received. Which got my thinking - do we need for a thread where we can discuss and berate the mods made by new owners of shite that you have owned?

Shame to see, mate.

The fate of many an SW20! If it's a small comfort, mine will never look anything like that. :-D

I’m struggling to see the gearstick, presumably it’s got an aggressive short shift kit which now means it’s 5cm high and quite difficult to select gear with.

Looks like a boggo Rev 1 gear lever.

Rev2-5 look even shorter, given the smaller gear knobs, but IIRC they actually have the longer lever.
