Ok even I'm not sure what I mean.  Let's have some pics.

I can’t even recall what it was supposed to be. We were all laughing so much. Then he brought out the 12 inch model!

Hopefully I'm not asking a daft question that's already been asked and answered somewhere in this thread...But is there any potential/interest/an existing gathering place that's text based (so I'd guess Telegram, WhatsApp etc...Those are about the only current generation platforms I use - though heck if people wanted to go real old school I could dust of IRCd and host an IRC server!).

I always enjoy having a chat with folks, but I'm one of those people who hates video conferencing (or indeed phone calls) with a seething passion.  I have historically when I lived in Aberdeen driven the three hours to Inverness and three hours back again to speak to someone face-to-face because it saved me having to endure a phone call.  I don't know why, but it's just how I'm wired.  I just find text based communication a lot easier.

I know I'm probably in the minority these days though, but it seemed worth asking.

You could always join without video? I had a zoom this morning with one participant not with video. It still works as the box still highlights who is talking.

i do know how you feel in a way. My work is always easier if people write down what they need, then I can reply with properly thought out responses. But last night at least, some just joined the meeting and didn’t say anything. Hell, I’m shy and hate meeting and talking to new people.

You could also join without un-muting yourself, and just use the 'chat' function. It's great if you're nervous about the whole thing, as you can just be a passive onlooker.

Then when you have something to contribute, you can speak up, and become incredibly depressed and insecure when nobody listens to you or even acknowledges your voice. Even after speaking up on 4 or 5 occasions. Before realising that you're still on Mute. Good times.

On a serious* note, if you really struggle with tech shizzle, have some beer. It makes it all much easier.

Fine yall asked for this!

the one on the left is the one I pulled out inocently just to show the others, then the one on the right is the one I pulled out when I realised all hope was lost

but on a more serious note lamp on the left is a 160W Self ballasted ultraviolet woods glass mercury lamp I got recently

actually quite mesmerising lit up :) this would be used in applications you needed UV-A light with minimal visable light output (and this one being self ballasted with a tungsten ballast filament inside the bulb meant it could run directly off the mains without any need for external control gear)

image.thumb.png.59137ed51f4d59ad3c9df8abaa336f92.png

and the lamp on the right is a 55W SOX Low pressure sodium lamp

the low pressure sodium lamp was a workhorse of British road lighting for many years, from the 1930s to the early 2000's now the last factory that made them sadly closed its doors in 2019

(the SOX lamp being the finally form of Low pressure sodium lamp, with the X standing for Indium tin oxide, a special semi conductive coating on the outer glass bulb to reflect heat back into the arc tube for better thermal insulation and the ability to get up to temperature for lower input power therefor raising system efficiency)

but they are still one of the most efficient light sources out there as they output monochromatic yellow light in a wave length (589Nm) which is very close to the peak sensitivity of the human eye

if it makes you feel better i also really dont like making phone calls

especially if its to someone I have never spoken to before etc, I think its just part of the whole social anxiety thing I run into it on various things/levels

thankfully I dont find group video chats like this too bad if its with a bunch of like minded people I have met before/already know well :)

You don't need to download the zoom client; just block downloading the client three times in a row and the client will appear.  The meeting has a password and isn't publicly known so the likelihood of being zoombombed is low.

Having been in one of the zoom meetings which was bombed with extreme infant rape porn early in the first lockdown (one of the two which made the news headlines), I am somewhat cautious with what I join, but this is pretty OK and Brownnova is doing the right things with the meeting as far as I can see.

I've never understood how something as shit as Zoom has done so well.

Because it's pretty simple to use.  No accounts needed, no complex sign-in procedure, works across multiple platforms on multiple browsers and "just works".  Just shove in the meeting ID and password and you're away.

Compare that to most videocall software where you need an account, and to verify it, then to set up various other bits of software, then to get approved etc.etc.etc.  Zoom is just quick and easy.  Makes it more vulnerable as mentioned above, but for the significant number of non-computer-savvy people there are out there, especially elderly relatives who want to stay in contact but asking them to sign up for teams/skype/any other member service would be near impossible.

Heck, even the Speed Awareness Courses are currently being run on Zoom.  It surprised me how little you need to do to connect to a Zoom meeting... not even an email verification process.

I didn't have to do any setup or the like in the Teams meeting I participated in - thr only problem was that I had to use MS Edge to participate in it.

Damn it! I was going to try and join next week...

To be fair up until I left at 10.30 we’d mostly avoided any in depth invacar chat... the more people to talk about things other than invacars the better! 😆😆
