Desirable limited editions

Mr Laurence

Recommended Posts

The 1988 911 Carrera Clubsport. A limited run of standard 3.2s with a load of crap left out and a wedge knocked off the asking. Critically a lot of what they left out was sound deadening so they made the most glorious noise. Sold out in about ten minutes and sell for telephone numbers now. Porsche realised their mistake and whenever they took a load of bits off a car in future they remembered to charge a wedge more for it which was a shame.

Everyone fraps themselves inside out over the 2.7RS but that cheap, lightweight special edition was the best 911.

one that my family still look back on fondly is the Renault 11 Boston which Dad bought from new

to the casual observer, appears very similar to the Renault 11 Turbo with the stripes and body coloured bumpers - had special upholstery, a sun roof and a Blaupunkt Boston radio cassette player - the first car I drove when I passed my test back in '89, if I was to find one in good nick, I would struggle to resist :)

How about a sales brochure?

I had a holiday job at a BL dealer in ‘79. One of the cars I remember prepping was a Dolomite SE. They came in black with grey velour, seats and grey carpets, wood veneer and Spitfire wheels. Nice car but very unforgiving of careless grease monkeys’ fingers as I recall.

For some reason my prep work involved taking the drivers’ seat out which was not helped by a stripped thread on the seat runner. Or maybe that was why I had to take the seat out.

My Y10 Fila is a good example of how cynical special editions can be. Cheapo white paint and black plastic interior, red cloth and a few stripes and stickers. In a way I'd rather have a stock Y10 as the stock item would have a nicer alcantara interior. But use a sports brand to justify the white paint and the nastier interior to offset the cost of whatever extras were thrown at it.

Think the Alcantara was just the touring models, with the electric pop out back windows too. Base models were just as much black plastic & cloth as the Filas.

In the 1970s, AMC offered a Levi's Edition Gremlin.  It featured nylon seat upholstery made to resemble denim.  Evidently, real denim was deemed to be too flammable to be used as car upholstery!

Was it so? I mean, cotton is not exactly readily flammable. If I am not seriously mistaken, it is preferred to synthetic fibers in OOPs for welding.

I would suspect the reasons were costs and especially durability.

Does any car maker still make a proper honest to goodness special edition these days? I don't mean a stripped out sports version or anything good, I mean a poverty spec model with a few stickers and silly colours/interior trim, like the 106 Aztec.

Can you even get a true "poverty spec" model these days? Is it possible to buy a new, medium-sized car in this country that doesn't come as standard with sound system, central locking, electric front windows, etc etc?

Does my Panda Waze count, it's the normal Panda 4x4 Cross, minus the red towing eyes, but with a phone holder and a little badge

That does sound very much like an old fashioned spessal edition even if Waze implies the presence of a posh sat-nav multi media touchscreen centre.

But whilst browsing the wikipedia entry for Pandas (Pandii?) I found this!

The Steyr special edition, in Steyr tractor colours (red and white). As a tractor enthusiast I'd love a proper car/tractor tie in. A pickup would love great in John Deere or New Holland colours.

Don't think we've had the Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 1FM Edition yet

1fm_1.thumb.jpg.b07122273d629c543b14ec2105929396.jpg

1fm_2.thumb.jpg.0cd1c298991f17ce8f8f8260551d9988.jpg

"The 1FM edition of the 205 GTi is one of the rarest 205 variants Peugeot produced, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the launch of BBC Radio 1FM, Peugeot linked up with the BBC radio station to produce a limited run of 25 individually numbered cars boasting a range of additional features. With a price of £17,000 the car was far more expensive than the standard 1.9 205 GTi, however the price included a £5,000 donation to the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Centre. To emphasise the cars links with music, Peugeot called in Clarion who supplied a top of the range sound system for the car. This included a single CD head unit, linked up to a boot mounted six disk Clarion CD changer, Clarion 60w front speakers and 200w rear 6x9 speakers mounted in a professionally produced rear parcel shelf along with an amplifier fitted under the centre console.

Internally the car was fitted with full black leather seats with green stitching, air conditioning and a set of Radio 1FM 25th anniversary mats. A scissor jack was bolted under the passenger seat to make room for part of the air conditioning system mounted in the normal jack position under the bonnet. The engine was the standard 122bhp catalysed 1.9 GTi engine. The 1FM's all had power assisted steering and ABS. The intention was to sell the majority of the cars to celebrities to help promote the charitable cause. One of the cars was offered as a prize on Radio 1.

It is also believed that at least one Radio 1 DJ had the use of a 1FM for a period of time."

Savile had left the BBC by 1993 so the chances that he'd been "fixing kids" on the back seat of one must be slim to none.

Steyr usta manufacture Fiats under license many moons ago. Unlike Deere or New Holland.

I think the Levi's denim interior eventually became an option in the range.

The french were the grand masters at names for base models with a sticker on through the 90s. Weren't the last 205s all badged Aztec too? Ex mrs had a n plate and I've seen a couple of m plates too badged as Aztec.

The BX my grandparents bought in 1990 was a St Tropez. Sounds exotic. In fact it was a povvo spec with some snazzy graphics and a sunroof

BMW 320si. Built as a homologation special of a BMW world touring car.  It has tweaked 2 litre 4 cylinder engine with 175 bhp with engines built by Sauber.

Only 2700 built in total and dropping by the day as they made a colossal f*ck up of the engine even by millennial BMW standards. The engine had alloy liners, which cracked even at low mileages, which wrecks the engines.

Often lauded as the "Baby M3" in the press, which is clearly absolute bollocks.  500came into the UK in 2006, 190 still on the road and falling fast.

if you could get one with a replacement  BMW updated engine in 5 years there's only going to be about 4 of these left (all with the updated engine).

E46 Williams F1 edition

e46.thumb.jpg.32f33b412f17bce9a977853eb41517cc.jpg

"Following BMW and Williams F1 collaboration in the early 2000’s, BMW launched an extremely limited run of special 'Williams F1' liveried vehicles to celebrate this partnership. These cars featured a deep Le Mans Blue metallic paint with contrasting grey and blue leather seats, needlework of the 'Williams F1' logos on the head rests, ''Williams F1' stickers on the front wings and an official numbered plaque on the dash. So limited was this run, with models varying from 318’s to X5’s, that only 26 official cars were ever made."
