I came off the M6 southbound for Leyland last week to avaoid the crashed lorry issue ... saw the signs for the Martin Mere nature reserve ..

yep follow the signs and home I go .... learn a new way home  I thought   .....  5 mins later the signs have gone and I have seen some strange roads and got lost  !!! .. shit

all the google sat nav can say is go back to the M6 ...  so I did ... and the lorry issue was over and the M6 was clear !!

The I separated the red and copper coloured wires and burnt the insulation off them. Joined them together and insulated them

Stiffened the repair* with a plastic drinking straw and wrapped it in tape...

 

And they work! The right ear cuts out every so often until I fiddle with the cable but I rather that than one ear not working at all. 

At least I have a pair of working headphones and not just one ear until I buy some new ones!

 

I've managed to temporarily repair* the headphones which has lowered my level of grumpiness

I've had a pair of sennheiser momentum  for 8 years or so. Mine are 'on ear' and I find comfy but do occasionally check ebay for over the  ear versions with bigger cups and are available used / refurbished for £nottoomuch.

These (and I'm sure there are others) have removable/replacable cable - available cheap on ebay.

IIRC those were freebies with Orange/EE phones like 10 years ago. They're not much special, but if you like them.... 

Cheap on-ear stuff is hard to find that's worth the money - I'd always go Sennheiser. Koss Porta Pro sound better, but the quality isn't there.

OMGHGF update. Took my heap classic van to a garage I've had dealings with before and although they are up to their ears, when I suggested that with a bit of space in the yard I could do it with a bit of their knowledge and occasional assistance. This was accepted so yesterday I started getting stuff off it. Today I had to get the exhaust off the fannymould which I thought would be a pain in the arse but after a soak in WD overnight it came off with relative ease and every thing is very reusable. Small win. The engine mount is a pain in the butt to get off but off it bloody well came. Got the head off and could see where it had gone but the head is not looking great. Going to get it to a specialist in Bilston and let them tell me if it's worth getting it skimmed or if it's scrap. It's possible they may even have one although I won't be surprised if they don't. The head gasket on this is 28 years old so I can't complain, much. 

The last head gasket I did was in 1975 on a Moggy Minor which took about ten minutes compared to this, which is a pretty basic engine as well, taking me the best part of a day and a half so far. Going to put a new belt and tensioner on, although it's only 3 years old and done no more than 25 thou. Also, as the water pump is 28 as well, I'll get a new one as I don't want to take everything apart in a year or two if it goes tits. Pictures or it didn't happen I believe is an AS rule.

Pizza Express, Brum Bullring. Yes I know waste of time but Mrs Grogee said we had to go there. After 15 minutes of being ignored we got up and left. 

Went to Five Guys, where they've completely abandoned all pretence at service - it's all about the food. That burger was divine. Yes I had to stand and wait for "NUMBER NINETY-EIGHT" to be bellowed at me but it was worth it and no pretend bollocks about customer service.

Sunday I looked her address up on Google maps (on a laptop).  It struggled to find her address, which admittedly is a bit odd.  Got near enough in the end.

Tried to send it to my phone, which it failed miserably to do.  It sent it to my email though.

When I opened it, it had changed the rout from the one of three it had shown.

Tried Waze and it only wanted to travel by the A19, which I wasn't keen on with it being bank holiday.

Yesterday morning Google managed to send the map to my phone, looked OK.

When it came time to set off, it too had reverted to A19.

I told daughter (she was driving) to ignore it but she would try her phone.  It too insisted on A19, talked her into A1 instead.  GM wanted to transit Darlington town centre when there was a better option by leaving at Leaming Bar.  Daughter cleverly missed the exit and we added another thirty miles to the journey.

Then it announced that we had arrived, at an estate agent in the middle of the high street

I woke up Waze again the took us to the proper destination.

Returning later, Waze would accept no input as the car was moving (sensible if I had been driving) so daughter would return the way we came but thought that she had seen a sign for the A1.  None of us saw that although there was one for the A19 that she wouldn't take, carried on for a further ten miles or so, somewhat lost.

Took another sign for the A19.  All well and good but looking at it later, we passed the original sign for the A19 after adding another 25 miles to the journey.

I think my 20-oddd year old never registered, never updated satnav would have made it with less hassle.

If only it had been in the car.

Suggestion. 

How hard can it be?

One of those doesn't sit on the dash as well though... 

I've had a few roundabout mishaps with Google before and just carry on and turn around. Never found it too bad tbh, bar new build estates *spit*

Equally the built in nav in dad's 21 plate Ioniq is so mind bendingly fucking shit I've pulled over and wedged my phone on the dash to carry on before now, my brain can't live without the traffic info, nor am I used to turning my head to see the tablet on the dash (the speedo lcd picture of what to do is no use to me either, I drive it so rarely I've not got used to it, and when I do drive it it's inevitably through bloody london... Even if I know where I'm going on a medium length journey I have it running sometimes just to see the green eta turn orange and red... That's saved me a few times from a huge wait

There were two of them in the car though. One drives one navigates. They are on about trying to avoid that A19. It's easy if you look at a map.

The trouble with sat navs is they only show a couple of hundred yards ahead. People follow them and have no idea where they are actually going. 

If you want to see the whole journey in relation to other places, or want to avoid somewhere in particular, as above, look at a map. 

I'm not completely against sat navs, they are useful for the final mile in towns but not for a journey of any length if you actually want to know where you are going.

My problem is remembering the route for more than a couple of minutes.

I can listen to the satnav/phone instructions though.

I hit a pothole and it broke the bead by the looks of things. I'm about to go outside and attempt to reinflate it. In the meantime, an unused, original and probably >30 year old Michelin tyre managed to get me home.

The benefit of having real sidewalls, I suppose. If you'd hit it that hard driving a Merc or BMW on 19s with a 35-profile, that would have been new tyre, new rim and potentially suspension/steering rack. 

I know more than one person with the receipts to back that statement up, too...

Fingers crossed 🤞 for you.  I’ve been running on them and I suspect it’s just because I’m unlucky (!) but I’ve had loads of punctures, the side walls seem quite susceptible, and I’ve had a fair few repairs where nails have gone into them.

this was one of the most annoying,  a bolt, going round Guildford ring road one morning. 
at least it wasn’t a slightly warn newish one with loads of life left in it….  Ahh bugger.

Cheers mate, I don't know how I didn't see it because the crashing noise when I hit it was immense. I was worried I'd have ruptured the strut sphere as well! Sadly, and while I think the sidewalls helped prevent any further damage, the sidewall has a gash that leaks air.

I've also torn the CV boot which is another pisser, but hopefully that can get fixed on Friday. It's a good job the Micra is still roadworthy.

I had a large bolt in the shoulder of a brand spanking new tyre, almost in the sidewall, that had done less than 500 miles

I was lucky in my case as the conversation to the mobile tyre fitters went like this:

"Hi I'd like to book a new tyre fitting for [reg] OSR"

"I can see you had one already a couple of weeks ago"

"Yes unfortunately it's got a bolt through the shoulder, not repairable"

"No worries sir, that's covered by the lifetime accidental damage guarantee. Since it's still a nearly new tyre there will be no cost to you unless you want it today then emergency call out is £20" (fair enough)

I was very happy, doesn't always work out like that though! Still frustrating that a brand new tyre was wasted but oh well!
