The grumpy thread

Most garages just don't seem interested in a bit of light welding these days, either.

It has more to do with insurance than them wanting to do the work. Mine would at least double if I want to weld customers cars. As cars are somewhat more rust resistant now there really isn't the call for it to make it worthwhile.

With a bleached blond arsehole with a gallon of fake tan on. I just despair at humanity sometimes. Thankfully a shoddy looking Volvo commands more than a little respect from even the worst of arseholes as it is clearly obvious I don’t give a shit about one more scratch. I was quite hoping she would hit me if I am honest so I claim damages for whiplash, rabies and the loss of my unborn child (in a world of equality I don’t see why I can’t be pregnant just coz I is a man)

I think it's what Ken, Barbie's BF drives..

You sure that Arts degree is toilet paper ?

My son was applying for a job in a management consultancy. Asked me to critique his covering letter

I looked at their website

And wrote this to him

I also have looked at the leadership team.

These are the sort of people that I despise. The sorts that go to a minor pubic school, followed by an MA in Modern Languages at Cambridge, followed by a time at PWC. They vote conservative, have accountancy qualifications, and at a click of a mouse 4500 people are looking for new jobs in a Northern Town.

This is precisely the kind of content I used to enjoy on here - but it is politics and is therefore banned.

That's NOT politics . It references my stereotypes about people I have never met and know nothing about. Yes I mention who they might vote for, but......

Look if I hated them due to colour, religion, sexual orientation, that would allow you all to offer me advice about racism, homophia, or tedious bigotry, but hating someone due to their upbringing and ability to get on in life due to their place in the class system isn't politics.

It's life

Its me talking about life.

I deliberately didn't.mention the car That they might own.

That would be silly to judge a person's worth to society. On their transport choices.

X6 by the way.

I contacted several garages and bodyshops regarding getting the Discovery welding done

Answers?

Zero.

Garages are a business - if they have plenty of easy , bread n butter , servicing and repair work can you blame them for wanted to take on a - no doubt quoted- weldathon on a disco ?

I turn down most welding jobs

A lot of garages might be happy to patch a sill for the test or whatever but I think when your getting into major welding marathons like suspension mounts and dropping fuel tanks out it’s crap work they won’t want. Plus everyone thinks it’s a 15 minute wave of the MIG at it that costs £15.

In laws Corsa failed test some time ago on the rear spring mount having rotted out, like they do, garage said he wasn’t interested in welding it, and if he was it would be expensive. Can completely see why, dropping rear suspension, tank, then welding it accurately enough that it’ll run straight. On a £300 car.

My MGB needs 2 new sills and after 7 months I still don't have them done.

I understand that its a tricky job to do right so assume the lack of interest is that anyone who can do a good job is happier doing easier and possibly more lucrative work, which if I was in their shoes I'd almost certainly do the same, even though it's a 4 figure sum.

It doesn't get it back on the road though.

Wasn't "quite" my point, i understand a nuts n bolts garage not wanting to do it (albeit it's pretty poor to just completely ignore the question when a simple "it's not something we could take on" would be far more customer friendly), but it's still pretty poor for a specialist bodyshop to not even be interested in giving a quote. Even if it's an OTT one, or likewise say it's not something they would take on.

My point being it's not just garages, even body specialists only want the bolt on/bolt off work. (and likely the insurance jobs they can milk).

The garage i use for MOT's is "happy" to do the MOT patching, but that's it, they fact they even do that is rare in itself.

I took in a Morris Minor a couple of months ago that had drive issues...the owner is a friend from the theatre that we are involved in and had been told by the garage that had looked after it (at great expense to her) that it was knackered and not worth bothering with anymore.

To cut a long story short, I offered to have a little look as she really didn’t want to get rid but had no idea what else to do.

The ‘shot engine’ as diagnosed by her old garage turned out to be a clutch that was so worn, it had a half inch groove on the drive plate from the rivets.

The real issue though was the extensive welding that she’d paid for on the rear suspension mounts two years ago had actually been tiger sealed together and covered in Schultz.

It’s now been in the workshop for two months and has finally been MOTd now all the welding has been done both at the back and down both inner sills, along with a new fuel pump, alternator conversion, re-wire of all the front lights and countless other little jobs.

Luckily, I’ve had the space to put it in a corner and do a bit at a time between other jobs but if I’d had to do it to a tight schedule, I’d have ended up turning so many of my other regulars away that it just wouldn’t have been financially viable, either for me or the lady who owns it and is now getting back her beloved Moggie back in a safe and usable condition.

(Composed as njgLeeds was posting above)

The thing is I'm afraid, businesses exist to make money.

There are costs ranging from heat, power, light, insurance, rent, rates, salaries etc, that need to be paid whether you open the doors that day or not and thus it begats a simple mindset of, if I'm not making money, I'm losing money.

The MOT garage that you describe has a simple, enviable, rinse and repeat business model based around doing just one or two things to maximise the throughput of vehicles in a day.

They know how long an MOT takes, they know how long a simple repair takes, often nobody knows how long a more complex repair will take.

They're maximising their revenue and whilst the boredom of the business model would do my head in, I envy them the stability and simplicity that comes with it.

I do welding for others sometimes. If someone wants a Discovery welding I refuse. Not worth it. Always more rotten than they first appear. Same goes for Transits

I tell you what. Reading what some people on here think about you isn't much fun. Jeepers there are some very bitter and twisted folk about. Who are very good at jumping to entirely the wrong conclusions. Not sure the 'new' forum was a good idea if it gives people like Hooli liberty to be rude as f*ck about others. Also very disappointed to see people I considered friends jumping into the public mauling. Cheers chaps.

I have seen this on other forums, which in the end I left because of the 'we must have free speach' ended in tears. If forums were treated like a nice trip to the pub - where religion and politics are band from very good reasons - then they seem to work. I am almost certain I have never seen anyone change their views due to 'conversations' on the internet.

I am so desperately sorry that you read all of that vile, rude and appalling stuff over on the dark side, DW.  Being someone who's "in the public eye" I have also been subject to it (places like Digital Spy etc) and it's horrible.  My kids have had to read other people's opinions on me for years and, truth be told, it convinced me to fly as 'under the radar' as possible.

I'm in full support of free speech, human rights and all that and everything.  But people have forgotten one simple thing; "just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD".

It's very difficult to not "read below the line".  But try to shrug it off.  None of us are ever going to be liked by everyone, as much of a shame as that is.

I have looked and it's pretty nasty and unnecessary but it is only the symptom of what is going on here. If a man cannot grump about his relationship on a grumpy thread with out you jumping in and defending women then the mods backing you up and comments being deleted then it's bound to happen.

You need to rein it in a bit, let people vent. I appreciate you have your causes but this is not the place to be trying to enforce them.

Most on here on three things in their lives. Cars, work and women. If we cannot grumble about them from time to time then it is one fucked up place.

I would never prevent people from grumping about their relationships, but I do object to phrases like 'they're all like that,' and 'snakes with hips.' It's just not respectful. It also isn't reflective of the situation, nor helpful. Relationships struggle and fail for many reasons, and I don't think just spouting nonsense about women all being mad is either comforting or helpful.

But, I air my thoughts on such matters in public, whereas some people have got it into their heads that I go running to the mods every time I don't like something. That is not true.

Since the dawn of time women have been unfathomable creatures but we love them all the same. Been with mine ten years and still she baffles me sometimes.

Again though, venom towards you is just a symptom of a bigger issue: the biased and non transparent moderation here is annoying people. You are the one to stick your head up on various issues so you are the one in the firing line. You are the one seen to be causing trouble, whereas the sneaky tell tale twits do it quietly and get no comeback. Sad but that's how it is.

Indeed, but I'm still not sure it deserves quite the level of vitriol. I think some people need to have a long think about what they are saying. How does it reflect on them?

It's the same old issue that dogged text messaging  - it's hard to judge context sometimes. Or not in a lot of cases. Apply email to management rules - compose. Stop, Tea. Re-read. Then decide. That might help some.

And that is why the 'edit' button is there.  There are times when I've re-read posts, decided that it was a bad idea and either edited the post or deleted it all together.  In fairness, any quick edits probably ought to be prefixed with 'EDIT' because if you do an edit quickly enough, the forum doesn't flag it.

Partly true - but if it's not up there in the first place then it has little chance of causing any issues at all. And we're all a little more mature/thoughful/better or whatever. Deffo after the fact if needed, but maybe a little thought beforehand would go a long way in restoring the peace and harmony that is...oh, wait   :-D
