The Castle Gresley Rover 820

Motown

Recommended Posts

Hello There,

I am the owner of the castle gresley 820 the car is incredibly solid and clean to say its been sitting for a long period in an abandoned garage and has been vandalised numerous times. I am aware it was sat on concreate under cover but still i would expect some corrosion especially on the sills but there isn't. There is some light surface corrosion on the rear arch and the bonnet but that's about it. The car starts on the first turn of the key and after some tinkering sounds alot smoother than it did initially.

You may or may not know from my previous posts on the site i own a small fleet of rovers four of which are Rover 800s i have restored and returned five to the road this year and was hoping to make this the sixth. When i saw the car and what it needed i thought it would be fairly straight forward as i have a loft full of 800 parts however ive encountered a problem and iam hoping someone here can help me.

When the car arrived it was missing its door glass, door cards, front windscreen, scuttle panel, wheels and window regular motors.  So far i have replaced the door glass fitted a new scuttle panel and wheels i even managed to source a front windscreen which will be fitted soon. However when i went to fit the window regular motors i quickly realised the four pairs i had spare in the loft were MK1b and this car is MK1c (Mk1c being chassis number 276672 onwards). I've spent a good amount of time looking with relevant part numbers but haven't been able to find any MK1c window motors anywhere . So then i thought about switching out the door harness so the Mk1b motors would be compatible however i was told it wouldn't work as with the introduction of CCU (Mk1 cars) most of the connectors were changed including the ones in the B pillar which the loom connects too.

Naturally this leaves me in abit of a tough position and it got me thinking if there was another solution. Can the MK1b wires be crimped to the door harness of the MK1c? Does anyone on the site know were i can find some MK1c window regulator motors?

I desperately want to save this car so any help would be appreciated. Many thanks!

I'm afraid I can't help with ideas for the door motors.

However, I'd like to mention what a bloody legend you are for taking this car on. I tried drumming up some interest for it on here a while ago, but the general consensus was it was beyond help. I always thought it would still be worth the effort, so good man for biting the bullet.

It would be great to see some up to date photos of this one and your others!

That’s very kind of you! I love Rovers always have. I own and have saved others but the 800 is probably my favourite marque. I couldn’t watch the castle gresley car turn to dust or be crushed so I took it on. Here’s my 827 SLi my 827 Vitesse the 820 Si I recently restored which is an ex BAE car and finally the castle gresley 820 when it arrived on my drive 👍

What are the differences ? If it's wiring connector types, you just need to be methodical and start reading an RS catalogue.

Or is that too obvious ?

I believe the differences are the connector/plugs and the compatibility with the rest of the cars wiring but not 100% hense iam here. Am not a sparky or a scaley back so hoping someone more clued up can assist me! 👍

I'm not a sparky, but how many wires does it have going to the motor?

I assume an earth, and an always live when the ignition is on, (Maybe timed so you can operate the windows after you turn off ignition?)

The last time I replaced a door motor, it had inbuilt sensing, to prevent finger amputation, but all internal so just 2 wires.

If there's 2 wires going to the old one. Is there 2 wires going to the new? If so isn't it a case of working out which is live and which is earth and bobs your uncle.

Hi Motown. Well done firstly for saving the Castle Gresley Rover 820. Like yourself, I am a Rover 800 apologist/fan and so-called "collector".  However, due to some bad life decisions I was never able to save the 820, let alone even sort my own cars out.

I can't see why the wires could not be crimped into a Mk1b unit, but then as the Mk1c was basically an electrical test-bed for the upcoming Mk2 and the Mk1/Mk2 door units are not dissimilar, then maybe fitting up a Mk2 window regulator might your best bet.

If not, then understanding what the wires in the car do and crimping them to similar wires in the unit would be another way to find out if the units do work. I wasn't aware of any differences between the Mk1b and c window regulator units. However I do know that the Mk1c slimline trip computer was unique to the Mk1c so I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few electrical units unique to the Mk1c.

Btw - I'm not an electrical expert. Also, I was the one who offered you the doorcards on farcebook ☺

Here are some of mine:

Mk1B 827 Sterling, not looking as nice these days sadly. Needs to be sold as I really have no spare money or enthusiam for it anymore:

Mk1a 825 Sterling: This one I do intend to restore. Its the rare 2.5 Honda V6 model.

So pleased this got took on. I’ve been keeping an eye on that garage for over a decade and it’s amazing to think one of the cars turned up on here. Ironically, I would have guessed the 800 as the most likely to be scrapped due to the difficulty in sorting it. Excellent work!

Please keep us updated.

Great collection! Have you managed to source an OEM set of alloys? It's amazing to see how many photos there are of YRA when you Google the registration, including some early ones of it complete with alloys and still relatively clean and untouched.

Whatever the case, you sound like the ultimate custodian for this infamous 820.

Edit: I assume it's still got an old style V5 with previous owner details? If so, shock the shite out of them when she's on the road and send a photo of the before and after transformation! It would be interesting to know the history of the car from earlier in it's life.

The Mk1 800 is the greatest car in the world in my opinion. I could list why but I’d be here all night 😆

Hero. I mean, it isn't, but that's the kind of conviction the world needs.

I love mine. Slightly tragically, it's not a Mk1. If I'd had the space I'd still have my Mk1a fastback (fairly tidy 820e), but with pressures of space when I was still living with my parents, it went on eBay.

And the £46 I got for it didn't go very far.

Rover4.thumb.JPG.5a4e3cf763d788ca55b6e9c8692c3e53.JPG

That's my first one on the right, very soon after my grandfather gave it to me in 2000. I felt so flash running a 12-year old 800 as a 18 year-old. The Mk2 in the foreground is the one he replaced my one with.

The Mk2 has now been mine for over a decade, my grandfather gave it to me when he had to give up driving, and he passed away a few years later. it lives in my Nan's garage. It's a manual 825Si fastback and I will never, ever let it go.

Very, very best of luck with saving the saloon.

Aye i cant imagine it would be to difficult however before i had chance to look  (this post seems to have raised abit of attention) I have been contacted and i now have some MK1c window regulators arriving in the post. Thanks for your time though much appreciated!

Such a beautiful story thank you for sharing it although you shouldn't have got rid of your MK1 they are incredibly rare now especially in manual form. rumoured to be less than 10 currently registered on Uk roads

I do have a spare set of alloys they are the same as what's on my SLi although i don't know if these would have been on the car when it left the factory.

I am still trying to obtain the V5 from the chap at the abandoned dealership however i know the last V5 was issued on the 9th January 1998..... The car has a 1991 reg with Derbyshire plates so i suspect one previous owner who either sold or part exchanged the car and it has been sat in the dealership at Castle Gresley ever since.

I thought they were planning on redeveloping the site? Surely they’d accept any offers on the Maestro? Had a look at the Cavalier when I was last out that way a year ago, sounded like it was fucked when it was laid up in the early 2000’s.

I am unsure as to what's happening with the site but the redevelopment story has been doing the rounds for some time. I was initially interested in the cavalier which at a glance i had mistaken for a senator (I love Rovers and old Vauxhalls but not much else) However as you say the car was in a very bad state in the 2000s so only god knows what it would be like now....

The maestro appears to be just as solid as the 820 although its been badly vandalised too. I believe its an 1.6 Auto (cant be many left on the road now) so this was my main reason for wanting to save it.

The dealership seems to be still operating so i am hoping to hear something soon but i cant be the only person to show an interest so who knows?

Firstly I am amazed this car has survived, and secondly well done for having the stones to save it!

I’m pleased it’s rewarded you by being a runner and not having much rust.

The list of missing parts is a little weird, obviously I can understand the windows and wheels, but the rest is a little strange.

For things like door cards - did the previous owner to you start breaking it and sell the odd item here and there or were they just ruined by the vandals?

Anyway, good luck with finishing the restoration and also with potential purchase of the Maestro!

No a chap called John know to me through rover circles made enquires about the car long before i did but instead of taking the whole car away he choose to take a few selected parts from it. I believe around that time he had bought the Not2Grand 827 Sli saloon which was at the NEC and he wanted the parts in order to restore it.  He took the window and door mechs i dont know what happened to the door cards or the alloy wheels.

The wheels went walkies IIRC. There is a picture of it sans wheels but with the wheel nuts still on the floor of the garage.

Well done for taking this on btw!

Hello there fellow auto shiters

I've been working on the 820 for a few days now so here's a few updates.

Fitted some new rear windscreen trimmings

130809010_401967034189507_470385475159640793_n.thumb.jpg.9a476cb2e4efc3b419a8d6924e490a38.jpg

After removing all four doors from the car i have installed new glass, handles, door harnesses, lock mechs and window regulator motors. Since taking this picture i have also started to connect up the electrics to the car. I decided it would be better to have them crimped rather than soldered.

1980957457_Screenshot2020-12-13221433.thumb.jpg.4e94d0e34c2a029c64c84626107aa21e.jpg

It was while i was reattaching the doors to the car i noticed a few exterior door trims were missing but luckily i have a box full of them in the loft so i will put them on at some point in the near future. This is the first time the car has had glass and functioning doors since it was vandalised in 2017.

130936936_2731627323818477_2176706073895562516_n.thumb.jpg.7747e5307c9ed6896d71a039520895b2.jpg

I discovered the glove box wouldn't close at all and was getting in my way when moving around the car so i decided to fix it there and then. I removed the glove box to find it was being jammed by a cassette from 1987.  Helen Watson fans please step forward not really my cup of tea

130720268_852309008645740_488275868271709994_n.thumb.jpg.6898878c3e4cd3d8516cd7b3e13b79b4.jpg130991720_2806488189604185_8216739809331447036_n.thumb.jpg.2b25e62f48201a0fe93e5ee40375fcfd.jpg

And finally the Maestro

131043683_211212967163846_7007409776105349901_n.jpg.20e02daa525d3eddc3ed37f5d7b21ef2.jpg

Sadly it wont be coming to me and i am genuinely heartbroken about it I looked into buying it before and discussed at length my plans for it i even sent pictures of the other Austin/Rovers i have saved and restored to the owner.  Both myself and a friend have made further enquires about it this week and was initially hopeful that we could get the car.  The windscreen, door glass and the sunroof are all smashed and it has quite abit of front end rust although the wings seem fairly clean. I thought to myself there's plenty of Maestro parts floating about on Ebay if its solid like the 820 i can sort it but the owner wanted £700 and wouldn't move on the price despite chatting for sometime.

it’s obviously if you look online at the various posts relating to this abandoned dealership the main reason alot of the cars stayed there for so long is the owner wanted the same price for the cars he’d put on them in the late 90s and early 2000s.  For example if the Metro or Astra didn’t sell for £900 in 1998 it’s not gonna sell for that price now after sitting for 20 odd years and been all smashed up.  For £700 even if I had the parts I couldn’t give it the minimum it needs to get going again never mind completely restore it. It’s a £300 car max in my opinion.

More updates on the 820 to come soon. All the best 👍

Hello there fellow auto shiters

I've been working on the 820 for a few days now so here's a few updates.

Fitted some new rear windscreen trimmings

After removing all four doors from the car i have installed new glass, handles, door harnesses, lock mechs and window regulator motors. Since taking this picture i have also started to connect up the electrics to the car. I decided it would be better to have them crimped rather than soldered.

It was while i was reattaching the doors to the car i noticed a few exterior door trims were missing but luckily i have a box full of them in the loft so i will put them on at some point in the near future. This is the first time the car has had glass and functioning doors since it was vandalised in 2017.

I discovered the glove box wouldn't close at all and was getting in my way when moving around the car so i decided to fix it there and then. I removed the glove box to find it was being jammed by a cassette from 1987.  Helen Watson fans please step forward not really my cup of tea

And finally the Maestro
