Parky
I believe it means “They roll their “R”s in this chilly place” Checked the Swift today following my screenwash/expansion tank accidental interface. Nothing has turned to sludge and the coolant looks clean and blue. It should be green apparently so maybe a previous mechanic used the wrong stuff? Either way it’s looking ok so we got away with that. Ordered two tyres and an alignment. It is wearing Hankooks so I bought two new ones for the front where the outer edges of the tyres have worn away. The price was shocking but when I applied the discount code it fell to a more acceptable $260 or £130 in old money. Alignment was another £40 but worth it if the new tyres last a bit longer. The auction for the blue Civic ends Tuesday but as I am fairly certain I am going to buy it I have been pricing bits up. It will definitely be cheaper to buy some bits in the uk like filters but things like pads and discs will add weight and postage costs so I will get some stuff here initially and once I know which filters it needs (there are more than one type used) I will order a few for storage as they don’t weigh a lot. If I miss it I will go for that Corolla without the topcoat or the red Telstar. A white one has also appeared at a similar price and that’s a plain 2litre model so might be better for insurance so I might do a comparison later and see what’s what. There’s a red Hyundai Lantra winking at me too - it’s proper shit and I have watched the price fall from $1800 to £1200 so I might do a Mike Brewer and offer him $900 so he gets his driveway back. ”’old aht yer ‘and”, etc GrumpiusMaximus
Parky
Any thoughts on how to straighten up a warped Plastic hubcap? Replacements aren’t ten a penny on auction sites and I want to keep costs minimal. Zero preferably. I was debating a hot air gun combined with a flat surface might encourage it to level out? Or will I have a neat 15 inch circular plastic fire in the garden?
Parky
TradeMe you utter bastard. Just convinced myself I was doing the right thing by concentrating on that Honda Civic and you go and throw my favourite Rover in my perfect spec into the line of fire. Starting to think screw junior, let him learn in an auto....only 170000 kms with a 2.3l Honda engine. $1850 buy it now. I could have this today..... camryv6, dollywobbler, MorrisItalSLX and 18 others

STUNO
Just discovered this lot. That R600 looks a good one, and well priced , The Christchurch area seems to be the place to get really good older cars. You will get used to the weird pricings for everything. Glad you are finding out that rust isn't much of a problem here, no salt used on the roads anywhere, only grit. Parky
Well I recently returned from a trip to Corsair Bay to view the Rover. On the way I passed a scruffy green one at the side of the road. That’s a coincidence I thought until the reality dawned on me.... The pics looked amazing but that might be because the sellers wife is a professional photographer. Whatever filter she used was great at disguising minor flaws. However the Car drove well, interior was a tad grungier than I expected but would clean ok. Smooth and quiet but that engine bay. Wow, it was like looking at the power unit of the Starship Enterprise. There were things in there I didn’t recognise and I reckon Honda wouldn’t either. Paint was disappointingly flat. I reckon it would polish up but it just wasn’t as nice as I was expecting. Scratches and fading, a few scuffs. Meh. Wheels could use a paint up but four good Firestone’s. Ok, might be a goer. But the killer. I made an offer and the guy looked at me as if I had just put his cat through a mangler (I would never do that, at least I don’t any more since I discovered spin dryers). I went $1500 old owt yer and and he looked gutted. He feebly muttered “$1750 or I leave the auction to run”. Yeah good luck with that. As I was leaving I noticed the hole in the headlight and the broken wing repeater. When I pointed them out he said “oh are they broken? I didn’t know” but made no attempt to check. I don’t know, if it had been me I would have marched indignantly to the site to see for myself but he made no effort so I reckon he knew and was hoping I hadn’t noticed. New headlight? Unobtanium here. £50 in the UK but with that and the mirror cap and the side repeater we are looking at £75 in parts plus shipping. Lights are heavy and fragile so I wouldn’t be surprised if all up I need to spend $200 with postage to bring it up to scratch (and the headlight is a warrant fail so needs to be done) so I really don’t want to pay more than $1500. Plus a 2.3 litre auto isn’t going to be an economical knockabout. So I think I will decline. Sure it was nice but with the initial sense of disappointment and my gut feel was to walk away. Annoyingly I got outbid on that Honda Civic. I had a top bid of £1450 and at the last minute some joker with no feedback and an account set up an hour before suddenly hoofed it up to £1600. Nope, not playing your shill game pal. I texted the seller to say “wow You got a lot more than the 1400 you were hoping for!” And he came back to say “cheers, if it falls over I will contact you directly”. Which I take it is local slang for “I will text you tomorrow with some excuse about the buyer copping out and offer it to you for a tenner less than the highest bid” Have some shit pics. Parky
Ok, next three targets.... Toyota Levin, this is an auto but a nice little personal coupe. Currently at $1200 and no bidders but half of the South Island looking at it. Low mileage at 155kms, needs a bonnet and roof respray because of sun damage (or an Edd China rattle can “oh god the Capri front wings look shit” style home repair). Maybe one for Matt black vinyl wrap? Paint those wheels white for maximum JDM VTEC yo omgz?!?!?!?!. Sorry, it’s been a long day and my legs hurt from the bolsters on the Suzuki cutting of the blood supply to my feet. Yeah yeah Tony Blair 1997 Cool Britannia Mondeo Man education, education, education. John Prescott punching a bloke, David Blunketts dog, things can only get better and all that. Fucking didn’t did they? I dunno, I can’t help but feel if Ed Milliband knew how to eat a fucking sandwich we wouldn’t be where we are. Little bit of politics ladies and gentlemen, sorry. Christ I need a gin and tonic. $1800, has been on here for ages, clearcoat fucked on bonnet. Next! Hahahahahahahaha! You don’t think I would pay $300 for this heap do you? Of course not, it’s $400 at present. To paraphrase Mark Hamill first encountering the Millenium Falcon, “what a piece of junk”. @egg probably wouldn’t mind me getting this so I can send him rust free bits. I might go full Bob Ross on this mutha and paint a fricking mountain scene on it. Or have a “happy little accident” involving a bottle of acetone and a blowtorch. This isn’t a serious contender. Which guarantees I will end up with it. Fuck I’m tired Tickman, Angrydicky, TooManyPeopleMovers and 6 others

Parky
Toyota Corolla Levin. It’s a Japan market coupe based around Corolla bits. Nice aren’t they? Can’t help but feel that a sporty version of that with a 1600 multivalve would have been a good seller in the UK. A kind of cheaper Integra rival. I am all about education so git yer mince pies ready for a butchers at this! Nice scratch on the bonnet Erm, is the roof supposed to look like that? Oooh, that clearcoat isn’t up to much is it? Really? That lovely coupe style and this is the best you could do? Didn’t the MR2 or Celica lines have any spares? Parky
Flip, you don’t get many of these to the pound. Literally. Honda City for those who found the tiny third generation Civic “a bit bulky”. Apparently it runs like shit but 300000kms of abuse would do that to anyone. Definitely owned by someone called Bevan aka Bevvo who works in a skate shop as a part time gig until his band “Bevvo and the absolute no fucking hopers” get recognised. Last saw a Honda dealer in 1991 in Tokyo, last saw an oil filter at Oil changers around the turn of the millenium. It reminds me of some sort of Pokemon. A really crap water type, like a wheeled Mudkip. Still wanna catch it so I can keep it in a ball and throw it to certain death at some massive fiery dinosaur in a park someday. Parky
One more before I lose the will to live. This absolute piece of shite is literally the epitome of everything that was wrong at Ford in the late eighties. Whilst we got the mk 5 Escort, the rest of the world thought “that’s too good for us, we need something not as good”. When you are using a mk5 Escort as your barometer of good you know you have a problem. Busted water pump but apparently not a problem according to an ace mechanic. Lol. Absolutely awful. A pox on all the design and engineering team. Just a terrible, terrible conveyance aimed at the blind and unimaginative. STUNO
Levin...Just paint the roof black and same with bonnet later! Parky
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner! Finally managed to achieve the holy grail of manual, small engined, useful for junior, small enough but spacious enough, low mileage, good drive, and an ace colour. OK, maybe not the last one. May i introduce “Da Fuck?”, which I believe achieves a C+ in the shite exams In Coleen Rooney style, its........a Mitsubishi Mirage. 1998 I think, was $2000 but achieved ownership for $1750 Jacindas. 1300cc and a five speed manual and it’s sweeeeeeet. Best clutch I have ever encountered. It’s listed as blue but the mother in law immediately said “no, it’s more of a lavender” so now even Mrs P is encouraging me to repaint it. I might. But what colour scheme. I wonder..... Four decent enough boots in 155/70/13 flavour for added cheap replacements but it’s missing its jack so will resolve that tomorrow. Otherwise it all works. I’m actually happy and the drive home was a treat. Been a while since I drove a basic car (dash is a speedo, temp gauge and fuel gauge - that’s it) and I even found myself smiling. Tram Road. 100kph limit, straight and empty It is a bit Lavendery....... Yeah, that’s Lavender. Are you an 80 year old woman? But it has a good face. New colour scheme? Parky
It has a dent in the door, missing trims and the black bits need spraying up with satin black but that’s all easily sorted. The interior is minty mint although not sure if the height adjust on the seat is working. It’s probably not an adjuster, being Japanese it’s probably the ashtray release.
