Italian Stallion: Kiltox’s 1982 Fiat Panda 30!

@LightBulbFun I robbed the plate off a rotten Volvo 760 (E33 XGD) which was purchased from the wife of the original owner in Kilmarnock not too long after the local offices closed - it was allocated E952 HFG, despite having never been anywhere near Brighton.

My Transit was imported in 2004 and got L420 EAB which is also a re-registration series.

V5 arrived today. Interestingly it just says “FIAT” and has no model description. Bizarre. Means it comes up as “FIAT UNKNOWN” on the MOT history checker too.

Plates haven’t turned up yet but given I have a dose of the bat flu there’s no rush any more 😔

Oof. Stay safe and good luck! First time? First few days are usually okay and then suddenly it hits with an vengeance. By day 7-9 you're wondering when the feck it's going to go.

For most by day 10 symptoms ease off rapidly.

modern style mnemonic age related plates are still properly issued on an a location related basis

Correct as far as I know. Example - late 2016 3 Series registered new on a Select mark, which was transferred off 4 years later, car given an FP66 plate. The BMW had never left Leicestershire since being delivered to the original supplying dealer.

@Aston Martin wasn’t this your experience when importing a Panda as well?

how did you fill out the V55 form?

due to how the DVLA computer works, you cant have a custom model in the Model field, it has to be pre-existing on the DVLA computer

so if you wrote "Panda 30"  in the Model field, it would of been dropped as theres no DTP code For "Panda 30" under the Fiat DTP Make code

even KUC915W is also Registered as Just a Fiat, the "Panda" in the MOT checker comes from someone entering that on the DVSA end of things (probably from before it was even DVLA registered, when it got its first MOT)

if the DVLA have a Model code for just "Panda" with no suffix/trim level then you might be able to get things amended such so at least your vehicle shows up as a Fiat Panda

but I dont know if they do or dont they have such a model coded in (if anyone has the registration of a Fiat Panda with no trim level, or an early UK market car I could look up then I could see if "Panda" no Suffix/trim exists in coded form or not, it doesn't have to still exist, just be on the DVLA computer)

all vehicle records are stored in coded form and then decoded from a lookup table when they are requested, and if there is no code for the model written on the V55 form it gets dropped when the vehicle is registered

well more specifically it gets assigned the model code 000, and the DVSA's own lookup table decodes that to the word "UNKNOWN" but the DVLA's own lookup table just leaves it blank

if your curious on further reading I go into some detail here :)

awesome! just the sort of thing i was looking for

its registered as a Fiat Panda 45 (Make Code N1 Model code 034)

so no, trim-less option yet but at least we know the DVLA does have some model codes for the early machines, I am wondering if there will even be a trim-less option, as im not sure if Fiat ever produced a Panda with no trim level/suffix on the end?

But all this is a great example of how the DVLA works in coded form and everything is decoded by lookup table, and why sometimes a vehicle shows up differently depending on what you look it up on

because I noticed no matter what Panda you look up on the MOT checker, the DVSA's lookup table just decodes them all to "Panda"

clearly someone did not bother assigning the full model names to all the different coded models from the DVLA when they at the DVSA where setting up their lookup table LOL

its not just Fiat Panda's I have seen the DVSA be lazy/generic like this, I have noticed it on other vehicles as well, but the Panda is a good example

Further over imports and reg. I imported my van and did it through the Birmingham office. I got a Brum reg, WOL. The van was first reg Dec 88 so I'm fairly sure it should be on an F. Didn't it go Aug to Aug then ?

Also pissed off with them for putting it down as a GLD instead of a GRD, which is the no fukin options at all model, and would therefore having a certain anti status status by being the only one on the road in the uk, according to Howmanyleft. Bastards.

Oooh that reminded about how many left! thanks for that, its a handy website for checking what does exist in coded form and what does not,

since it only lists make and models that are coded and then presents them in a nice list format to scroll down

https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/browse/fiat/fiat_panda

and indeed as I thought there is no Panda 30 or "Panda" No trim/suffix, the best a Panda 30 owner can do is register it as a Panda 45, or explicitly have the DVLA register it without a make code, and have "FIAT PANDA 30" as the make (where custom text input is allowed) in theory you might be able to get the DVLA to setup a proper code for Panda 30 but that would probably involve special liaising with the DVLA and a Fiat owners club or even Fiat themselves

on the Pug 305 front there exists a Model code for GRD

L1 056

is the full Make Model code for Peugeot 305 GRD (L1 is Peugeot and 056 is 305 GRD)

so you could get that corrected if you wanted to! :)

it looks like as you say they also messed up on the reg mark as you say it should be on an F prefix age related plate

UNLESS the month of first registration was only provided at a later date after the vehicle was registered/declared manufactured 1988? (by default when no month is known it looks like they default to the earliest possible suffix/prefix for the year which for 1988 is E prefix)

(sometimes the DVLA does not retroactively change the plate when new info comes to light)

either way its another thing you can easily request the DVLA to fix if you wish to do so :)

Did you try spraying easy start in the carb to check it was fueling not ignition troubles?

I did not. Tbh I’m thinking about taking it to someone to get it running properly now, not sure I can be arsed with it and I have a trailer it’ll fit on.

Anyone got a rough guide for setting up a carb from scratch? It’s running far too rich atm, so it won’t start when even remotely warm and stalls at idle if you let it.

Managed to take it for a quick run around the block earlier but it conked out as I pulled back into the estate where the unit is!

My experience with all carbs, including small engine and (admittedly SU) carbs is that fully in and then two half turns out is a good starting point. Does HBOL or service manual give any initial starting point on it?

Set the mixture screw to roughly this and it started immediately and ran pretty well.  Took it around the estate where the unit is and it just randomly died out of the blue.

Wouldn’t restart, so cue the trailer’s first official outing about 300 yards away from the unit 😂

Well I've been meaning to sign up here in forever, but kept forgetting. Thanks to someone over on another forum I frequent poking me about it recently the subject was forced back into my very brief attention span for long enough to get me to act on the instruction.

I figure that my little varied fleet might bring you lot some amusement...

      So...we've got:

1993 Lada Riva 1.5E Estate (now fuel injected, as I reckon the later cars should have been from the factory...).
      1989 Saab 900i Automatic.
      1987 Skoda 120LX 21st Anniversary Special Edition.
      1985 Sinclair C5.
      2009 Peugeot 107 Verve.

Now getting the photos together has taken me far longer than I'd expected...so you're gonna get a couple of photos of each car for now, and I'll come back with some more information tomorrow when I've got a bit more time...

Firstly...The Lada. Before anyone asks - in response to the single question I get asked about this car: No, it is not for sale. Took me 13 years and my father's inheritance to find the thing.

Yes, it's got the usual rusty wings...Hoping that will be resolved in the next couple of months.

Next, a proper old Saab. One of the very last 8 valve cars apparently, and all the better for it. I've driven two 16v autos and they were horrible - the auto box works sooooo much better with the torque curve of the 8 valve engine. Just wish it had an overdrive for motorway cruising...

Next up a *real* Skoda...back when they put the engine where it belongs, right out the back. In the best possible colour of course...eye-searingly bright orange.

Seat covers have been added since that photo was taken as it suffers from the usual rotting seat cloth problem that affects virtually all Estelles.

Then we have possibly the world's scruffiest Sinclair C5...

Realised when looking for this that I really need to get some more photos of the thing...I use it often enough after all! We have a dog who's half husky, so this is a really good way of getting him some exercise.

Finally - again, I really need to take more photos of - we have the little Pug 107.

Included for the sake of variety even if it's a bit mainstream! First (and probably to be the only) new car I've bought, and has been a cracking little motor and has asked for very little in return for putting up with nearly three years of Oxford-Milton Keynes commuter traffic, before finally escaping that fate when my housemate moved to a new job. Now it doesn't do many miles and is my default car for "when I've managed to break everything else."

I'll fill in some more details tomorrow - I warn you though that I do tend to ramble...

I think the Broadsword fleet has become sufficiently complicated to merit a combined thread so that gradually all new additions will appear in one place.

As of Sunday 17th March the situation is interesting.

Two Citoren Xantias (remember the white Xantia of Excellence is for sale people!)

A turquoise XJR6 pending overdue-collection (need that gone now!)
      http://autoshite.com/topic/34003-jaguar-xjr6-double-madness-double-sold

An XJS 3.6 manual project which will get in high gear soonish. Wont be a keeper but will be fun getting it back to something presentable. Drivers fantastic!
      http://autoshite.com/topic/34664-jaguar-xjs-36-manual

A Range Rover P38, which is turning out to be really rather good.

And to mix things up even more I'm off on a collection caper today. Had first refusal on it and was expecting it to come around in a year, but things soon changed and no way was I going to pass up on it. It may well render the second Xantia redundant as I've got a really good feeling about this motor.

In the meantime here are some snaps of the Range Rover. As usual it was a car I said I would probably never buy due to their reliability*. I have said the same of Jag XJR, XJS, XK8 and I have had all of those now. Basically the moment I declare buying a particular car is impractical or improbable, I end up buying one.

Things to note on the P38. It's a nice colour with tidy body. The EAS has been removed. It runs and drives lovely and it doesn't have enough electrical problems to hinder progress. The main one is the driver's side window not working, but that should be fixable. I've tried changing the outstation, that didn't fix it. Might be wiring under the seat. Other than that I bought it and took it for an MOT the very next day, and it passed. Since then it had what seemed like a battery drain, but since unplugging the RF thingy for the remote locking and putting on a proper lead-acid battery, which the car can actually charge, unlike the modern lead-calcium batteries, it has been perfect. I will treat it to a full service soon.

Stay tuned for the latest collection later today!

      Hullo,

I'm a masochist from Leeds who is running two rusty, worn out Triumph Dolomites as my only transport in rural Aberdeenshire. You might recognise me from various other forums and Facebook groups. Realistically I need to buy a modern car of some sort, but instead I find myself looking at £300 Citroen BXs and Triumph Acclaims on Gumtree and thinking "yeah, that'd fit right in with the rest of the broken cars I can't afford".

On to the cars, the main attraction being my 1976 1850HL "50 Shades of Yellow" that I bought for £850 and is currently my daily driver, here is a picture of it before I sanded off some surface rust and sprayed it badly in the wrong shade of yellow with rattle cans:

Within a month of purchase I managed to plant it in to a steel fence backwards after a botched gear change on a wet roundabout and ruined the N/S rear wing, although judging by the other dent that's packed with filler it looks like somebody had already done the same. I also managed to destroy a halfshaft and one of my Sprint alloys (good for an extra 15hp) in the incident, so now it's sitting on it's original steelies but painted black (good for an extra 5hp).

It's only broken down on me twice. once with some sort of fuel delivery related problem which may or may not have been an empty fuel tank and once when the thermostat jammed shut and it overheated and blew out some O-rings for the cooling system. It has recently developed a taste for coolant and oil which is rather annoying, although it's done 89,300 miles which is about 80,000 more miles than BL engineering is designed to last, I'm keeping my eye on eBay for replacement engines...
I tried to keep ahead of the rust a bit by rubbing down the arches and re-painting them, but apparently rattle can paint isn't great when you are spraying it at -5C, it also highlighted how although my car might have been Inca Yellow in 1976 it's now more of a "cat piss" sort of shade. So I ended up with the wrong shade of yellow which has rust coming back through after 5 weeks. Did I mention I'm incompetent?

The other car is the first "classic" car I bought, so I can't bear to sell it. It's a '77 Dolomite 1300 and it cost £1400 (about £400 too much) and has been nothing but a pain in the arse:

It looks much prettier (from 100 yards) but that's most due to the darker paintwork hiding the rust. It lives a mollycoddled life in my garage, where it somehow still manages to rust, and is utterly rubbish. 0-60 is measured on a calendar, top speed is 80ish but at that point it uses more oil than petrol, it rarely ventures over 50mph and if you encounter an incline of any sort you can kiss that sort of speed goodbye, along with about £20 of 20W50 as it vanishes out of the exhaust in the form of blue smoke.

One of the PO's had clearly never heard of the term "oil change" so it developed into brown sludge that coated everything internally with the next owner(s) blissfully pouring fresh oil on top of it. This lasted until about 600 miles into my ownership when there was muffled "pop" from the engine bay and the car became a 3-cylinder. The cause was catastrophic wear to the top end causing a rocker arm to snap:

As this was my first classic car I'd assumed it was supposed to sound like the engine was full of marbles, it wasn't.

I put the engine back together with second hand bits declared it utterly fucked and promptly did another 5000 miles with it. After about 3500 of those miles the oil burning started, valve seals have gone so it's been relegated to my parent's garage as a backup car and something to take to local car shows as the 1850 is now embarrassingly ugly. I'm keeping my eye on eBay for replacement engines (deja vu, anybody?) Oh, I also recently reversed it into a parked Ford Fiesta and royally fucked up the rear bumper, rear panel and bootlid. Did I mention I'm incompetent?

There have been two other cars in my life. My first car, a 2008 Toyota Yaris 1.0 an it's replacement a 2012 Corsa 1.4T. I didn't really want either of them, but it's a long story involving my parents and poor life choices. Ask if you want to hear it!

So that's a brief summary of my current shite. If you want more pictures or details of anything do say as I've got photos of almost everything I'd done with the cars.
