Howdy! A long time member and recent contributor on the former @320touring W124 thread. (also his brother).

I have decided to start my own wee thread to enlighten you with the joys of my automobiles.

Currently I am in possession of:

E30 316i '316328'

E30 325i Touring '335' shared with @320touring

Polo diesel (veg) formerly @davehedgehog31

W124 300d (also veg).  SELTIT

Ford Galaxy 1.9tdi PD

Today was a good day in reference to the 316328.

After over a year off the road due to me being a twat and blowing a spark plug out of the head, this went in for it's MOT.

IMG_20201006_121737.thumb.jpg.cf241bc1256e2fb19187bb702efbfae0.jpg

IMG_20201007_152508.thumb.jpg.0204e73c27b74d5b19a78d20ecee139c.jpg

Pleased to say, it's a pass! IMG_20201007_160347.thumb.jpg.e35f8caf3fb21ba68f6894346ce08ba9.jpg

A couple of minor advisory points (brake pipe, and brake wear light on, (has different brakes), but all good!

Why do I refer to it as the 316328, I hear no one ask..... Well, it used to be a 316 Auto, now it has a 2.8 M52 from an e36 in it. Will post more details later.

Other than this, the 335 needs a head gasket, the Merc is about ready for an MOT, and the much maligned Polo continues to take everything that I throw at it.

Cheers. Jp

Has the BMW still got rhe chemical metal repair on the tank from SF16? (or was that a different car? It was mostly dark and every time I came out to see you I'd had a few more cans...)

Alas, it is indeed the same car, tank eventually got replaced when I got home safely*

Howdy!

Tomorrow is MOT day for this.

IMG_20210226_113310.thumb.jpg.e24f5845270574d47bfff5dcad3d8a4a.jpg

A quick 'valet' sees it looking like a cared* for car. That'll fool the tester!

An evening was planned filled with football* (Inverness v Hearts), but before that.... A quick light check, that won't take long...

First off, nae sidelights, a quick look around the e30s freed up a couple of bulbs. Sorted. Next, nae number plate lights. Bulbs again.... So I thought. Alas no.. No power at the holders or the connectors. Fuses were all fine.

A great pic, I know, however, you should be able to see the broken wire with the green tracer.

An industry standard* repair was made

IMG_20210226_201552.thumb.jpg.fa83dc25af3eb797e6c3e596aeeb680b.jpg

A wee wrap of the only insulation tape I had, tidied it up a bit.

IMG_20210226_201956.thumb.jpg.51aab52176c32cf6b19431a6ae7e536d.jpg

Annoyingly, I forgot to get before and after pics of the lights.

Here's hoping tomorrow goes well!

Having successfully passed the MOT. I decided that I would service the polo, I have had the parts for about 8 months, you can't rush these things. The plan was oil/air/fuel filters and an oil change. Simples.

IMG_20210313_155646.thumb.jpg.64ddbf65d223110dc01e950a01a56166.jpg

Thankfully, I hadn't fitted the air box retaining bands, because they are a pain in the arse.

IMG_20210313_155730.thumb.jpg.1ed4bf3b254637c36646aab0be6a1ff2.jpg

Essential tools to replace air filters, the water pump pliers 😂

Screenshot_20210315_200111.thumb.jpg.b1d1eefb0c7639fca7f9e49850ae4fc4.jpg

Slightly better..... Next the fuel filter it's handily located on this bracket.

Screenshot_20210315_200147.thumb.jpg.d3d75019c6d9f5e6616b01be4f575f56.jpg

Which is in here.

Screenshot_20210315_200158.thumb.jpg.e12a6c35988d90ae7bba8d6402a731d9.jpg

When this had previously been in to get the bottom arm done on this side, I asked the garage to do the filter whilst they were in there. They said they had, I got home and checked.... Suffice to say, I did return the next day to register my difference of opinion... Also asked where the heck, the new fuel filter was. Can you guess what gave me a clue that it hadn't been changed...

Time to swap over to the new one and fill it up with diesel*

Screenshot_20210315_200231.thumb.jpg.ed59f67707024b7152a7e6cbcd0e757b.jpg

All sorted.

Screenshot_20210315_200243.thumb.jpg.808e2c9dafc7afbb43067e6a1d38b253.jpg

Next, oil drainage!

Screenshot_20210315_200300.thumb.jpg.4da22259c3d8dc2d845832f5cc7a8701.jpg

The pela was struggling, as I don't think the oil had been replaced for quite some time... Don't think @davehedgehog31 did a service either?

A quick cut up of an old oil container and the car up in the air soon saw things progressing.

Screenshot_20210315_200346.thumb.jpg.347cd1da0ea73aac73a119d83bdff6a2.jpg

The oil filter was a bit too tight to get off my hand, and I misplaced my filter grabber 5000, so had to improvise.

Screenshot_20210315_200316.thumb.jpg.1d24c8b9c63e56579b8f33f4e15d1545.jpg

Just the end of a ratchet strap, fed through the hook, job jobbed. I then dropped the filter off, got it to the top of the bay and dropped it... Thankfully it stayed in the correct orientation. Some oil was spilled, but not too much. Screenshot_20210315_200330.thumb.jpg.f1b7a2b13f20994c74588a76cc64b0b1.jpg

Kwality* new filter Screenshot_20210315_200400.thumb.jpg.09b94e0d8900c6b69a0fdba9fc161a92.jpg

Installed.

Undertray is pretty funked so likely to remain off.

Have a bonus video, complete with comic timing.

How do you get on with the Polo? I know @davehedgehog31wasn't keen on it.

I can't complain about it man, it starts all the time, is pretty frugal and carries all my drum gear.

Don't get me wrong, it'll not set the world alight with pace, styling, comfort or panache. However, it cars very well.

Plus, it'll run 100% veg 😂

Buoyed by the successful completion of the Polo work, the fact I am on annual leave and the pesky thing isn't running right it was time to have a go at the 316328......

Quick synopsis, about 2 years ago, I blew a sparkplug out of the head. Stripped it down, got the head fixed, and lost motivation. Stuck it back together (a slightly shortened version of the truth) and got her running again, mot passed too!

Anyway, it's been running pretty poorly, difficult to start, really rich, pretty flat too. I suspected the lambda sensors.. Last week she was in the garage to get the codes read, and of course, the one lambda I didn't replace when the head was off, was faulty. It was replaced and the codes cleared. She seemed a good bit peppier but still not right.

Time to investigate!

First thing a compression test!

Coils out.

Using the correct* tool makes it easy! Paging @davidfowler2000😋

Results below don't look too bad.. Left column is dry and the right is with a splash of oil in the bores. (all but 1 off the scale)

Screenshot_20210315_232804.thumb.jpg.c003c897fa9b7f132975be97749927ad.jpg

Plugs are pretty sooty. As would be expected with the rich running.

What next....?

Rocker cover off and check the cam timing...

Screenshot_20210315_231537.thumb.jpg.8ec5a3b8b2ef3de02a3e2381a868f855.jpg

On closer inspection they look slightly out, the 2 square ends should be aligned with each other and parallel to the top of the head.

Screenshot_20210315_231547.thumb.jpg.51f735686bfdf9d693a7060f77d0f9b3.jpg

The exhaust cam, (left) is driven off the crank, and the intake is then driven by a short chain off an adjustable sprocket on the front of the exhaust cam. It's entirely possible that I farked it up when rebuilding the top end, or didn't torque it up correctly.

Also to add a little more excitement, there is a variable valve timing system which is driven by an oil actuated solenoid.

That ended the evening's fun, more investigation needed, have to remove the bonnet and radiator to get in to see the timing mark on the crank. So will have a look and report back!

Further investigations began by removing the bonnet, note to self..... If doing this again, park the car the other way in the garage to allow the luxury of height to aid bonnet removal... Pela can also be seen spooking coolant out the rad here.

Screenshot_20210317_152751.thumb.jpg.01ba0fd642c540c90f801525b25f0b82.jpg

With the bonnet removed, we can see what is going to need removed.

Screenshot_20210317_152800.thumb.jpg.ab6f495d48f5bda1e6ad458b3d651614.jpg

Rad was removed post haste, with the return hose from the heater safely* places out of harm's way, and the temp switch for the fans was removed with ease*...

Handily with all that jazz out the way, I can see the crank pulley to get it to TDC.

Screenshot_20210317_152850.thumb.jpg.6d92755640188ad5fe08f958777f3fd0.jpg

Here it is, all lined up at the bottom end.

A general shot of the cams to show the sprocket set up. Still looking a little bit out of sync. There shall be more pics when I get into this.

In the interim, I thought, I'll just have a wee tidy up of the lambda sensor wires, should be a quick* job.... No pics, suffice to say though, my intention did not involve removing the fuel rail, and bursting an injector O-Ring.... Anyway, it was handy that I had a spare set of injectors lying. Problem solved.

Below is the aftermath of a spark plug being sent into orbit via the coil!

Sub optimal, I am sure you will agree!

I am on annual leave this week and managed to get an opportunity to test out the Polo's roof bars!

Screenshot_20210320_181950.thumb.jpg.046b372d8c6e4adac2c9b58f6a7f4bf1.jpg

Thankfully I was not up the ladder!

Anyway, I have done a fair bit of research around the timing set up on the M52 engine, so will look to get on with that over the next few days. I'll keep you updated on progress!
