The oldest Land-Rover Series 3 around?

A lot of older Yanks have a setup whereby when you switch the wipers on they come on intermittent with a long delay, then as you turn the switch further the delay decreases and then eventually you get to constant wipe and then, with another click, to high speed.  Unfortunately they tend to be on a stalk rather than a knob but you might be able to use the guts out of one of those.
Not just older yank chod - my 02, 03 and 06 Chrysler Voyagers have all had that sort of control on a column stalk. They don't seem to go wrong either, so if you can find a scrap one, Bob's your uncle...

A Stage 1 car so was mostly a Series 3 with drum brakes and leaf springs but with a detuned Range Rover V8 and permanent 4 wheel drive.  It had an overdrive which was very useful and motorway cruising was fine because the whole thing was so noisy at 30mph it wasn’t really any worse at 60mph.

The “detuning” of the engine was done by putting some large washers in the inlet manifold so when I got it serviced I asked the garage to remove them.  I think this took the power up from about 90bhp to something like 120bhp which was a right laugh with the non-assisted steering because the scenery was now coming towards you much more quickly.

The 109s with the six cylinder or V8 engines had twin shoe drum brakes and a servo and I found them ok.

At the same time as owning this I had a Kawasaki ZZR1100 which would sail past 170mph with ease.  Much more terrifying was getting the derestricted Landie up past 80mph.

We had a dusting of snow last night, so I thought I'd take it out for a spin in the forest. Here's a terrible video of me attempting a cold start on the cranking handle again. I'm not sure @dollywobbler has anything to worry about just yet!

I wish it'd been a bit deeper, but it was good to see what traction was like - surprisingly good even before engaging 4 wheel drive. 

The tyres are Michellin XPC, which are a winter tyre so not a surprise I guess! I chickened out of continuing the track at the end, as it's been unused for a while and the brambles might scratch the paintwork...

Looks good in the white stuff though :-)

The difficulty I'm finding (purely at this stage from a research perspective) is the availability and price of the two-speed switch, LR part no. 575146. There are some on eBay, but not identical so don't link a set of contacts together in the off position to enable self parking via the microswitch in the wiper motor. This may be a possible, and should work with my existing on/off switch:

A request for knowledge! Does anyone know what this is for?

Colin, the previous owner, came up to me with a bag of 'bits left over',  some of which were parts he'd replaced but were too good to throw away, lights etc.  But this he couldn't remember, possibly something to do with the gearbox perhaps?

If it's flexible rubber or plastic, I've got one behind our upstairs WC.  It's a metric to imperial waste pipe adaptor.  Otherwise, no idea.

On that subject, an improvement is hopefully on the cards, and I've made a start today. I had a small amount of sound deadening sheet left over, so I've stuck a sheet inside each door to stop the skin from drumming.

More importantly, I've added some to the bulkhead immediately behind the engine, after sealing up several holes with grommets.

By itself this won't do a massive amount, but can only help. The biggest improvement I hope will be this:

A moulded mat which gets good feedback on various forums, and should look fairly neat too. It's not cheap, in fact at over £300 it's around 10% of what I paid for the vehicle in the first place! But if it makes it more enjoyable for both of us then I think it'll be worth it. Just waiting for it to be manufactured, then should be a simple job to fit.

I *think* that goes on the interior fan air intake and forms the "seal" against the wing.  You may find that the interior fan is drawing in a combination of exterior and underbonnet air at the moment.

Also, when a LR engine starts as easily as that, but then konks out after a few seconds, it's over-choked.  If you reduce the amount of choke you give it, it may start and stay running.  The 2.25 petrol often doesn't need a lot of choke, even when stone cold.  That said, it might depend a bit on the carburettor, as there were at least three different types fitted.

Just don't ever try hand-cranking a 2.25 diesel.  It's basically impossible.

That fits, as it normally fires and runs straight away on 3/4 choke. With it being colder than usual, I made sure to pull it out all the way! Even when cranking with the starter it was slightly reluctant to fire, which should have been a sign...

Just been to check the heater motor, and you were right!

Still waiting for the soundproofing, but have been assured it will be with me next week. To be fair, they did warn me that there were delays, so not unexpected. In the meantime I've been fitting some ICE!

I had some speakers in the LT, which I thought would suit it perfectly - parcel shelf speakers seen to be a thing of the past!

Slightly short of locations to fit the radio, I decided to mount it in a holder underneath the dashboard. I didn't want a modern unit, and I reckon this one dates from the early 90s - in fact I think I remember it back in the day.

It looks quite close to the handbrake and low ratio lever, but in practice it doesn't interfere. One of the reasons for going for this one is the 3.5mm audio input, so I can play tunes from my phone.

Had a large and rather heavy parcel arrive recently! 40kg of floor matting; this is the main piece:

There's a section to cover the middle of the bulkhead, a pair of kick panels to cover the bottom of the A posts (more for cosmetics I guess), and lastly another big moulding to cover the seat box. This needed drilling for the seat bolts, and also cutting for access underneath the seats to the fuel tank, storage etc. Here it is in place, although seats not fastened down yet as the original fixings are too short.

Annoyingly the handbrake gaiter was a bit fragile, and has now split. Another one (not Britpart!) on its way. 

 Then a fair bit of heaving to get the main section in place over the various levers. It does look pretty good now though IMO.

Once the seats are mounted I'll see what the noise levels are like. I meant to measure before and after, but I don't want to remove it all now!

I keep looking for a series 3, but lowest priced one I came across was £2599 No MOT and chassis & bulkhead made of swiss cheese...

You still occasionally see an oily rag runner pop up on FB etc at a reasonable price but they don't hang about. What kind of weirdo prices with 9s on the end? Was it a dealer?

I'd say 3.5k was a real mates' rates price for that. Even when you bought it, it was probably worth twice as much. Absolute bargain - well done 👍

These days I think 3k ought to buy you something up and running and basically sound. There are many people trying to sell resto projects for that, mind.

My new gaiter arrived today, seemed pretty thick and rubbery although there's a lot of poor quality rubber around nowadays, so time will tell how long it lasts.

We went shopping in it tonight, so the first chance to test it. I'm likely to be biased, as I paid for it but my wife said (unprompted) that it's made a massive difference! I measured the sound level over the 12 mile trip home, a mixture of 30mph villages, and 50mph cruising. Average was 76dB, with a peak of 82dB. No idea how it compares to standard, but it's now possible to have a normal speaking conversation, and just feels so much more relaxing to drive. Worth it IMO :-)

      I've been under the disco armed with my trusty air needle gun. Found a few holes

      This is what's annoying about getting garages to do welding, they use the minimum amount of plate, and surprise! you've got a hole next to where they've plated.
      Then there's the weird "scabs", where the surface of the plate has gone but solid underneath.

      Except scab on the side next to the fuel tank also has a crack in it.
      N another crater on the offside. It's like there's chunks of "not steel" in the steel.

      Fortunately apart from the gaping holes it's solid, as my 30 year old migmate only works on the top power setting.
      I can do pigeon shite:
       
      The one at the side of the tank was more of a bastard as I don't want to take the tank out, but also don't want to melt it. So I welded a bit, cooled it down with wet towel, repeat. Except when I came to do the top edge I can't get the torch in. Had to get the sealant gun out stick welder, and bend an electrode. Obvs I left the slag on to make it look more pretty and will have to be liberal with the underseal.

      Not sure what to do with the crater on the right of the pic above? It withstands 90 psi needle gunning.
      Also not sure about wheel arches. There's this spot where the underseal has failed:

      I'll grit blast the rust spot and treat, but should I remove all the underseal for if there's more nasties hiding? Or a new coat over the top of all sound* underseal?
      Ultimate plan is to fit a new rear chassis, but just haven't got time or facilities. So shonky 3mm plate to hold it together for another year.

      Well I've been meaning to sign up here in forever, but kept forgetting. Thanks to someone over on another forum I frequent poking me about it recently the subject was forced back into my very brief attention span for long enough to get me to act on the instruction.

      I figure that my little varied fleet might bring you lot some amusement...

      So...we've got:

      1993 Lada Riva 1.5E Estate (now fuel injected, as I reckon the later cars should have been from the factory...).
      1989 Saab 900i Automatic.
      1987 Skoda 120LX 21st Anniversary Special Edition.
      1985 Sinclair C5.
      2009 Peugeot 107 Verve.

      Now getting the photos together has taken me far longer than I'd expected...so you're gonna get a couple of photos of each car for now, and I'll come back with some more information tomorrow when I've got a bit more time...

      Firstly...The Lada. Before anyone asks - in response to the single question I get asked about this car: No, it is not for sale. Took me 13 years and my father's inheritance to find the thing.


      Yes, it's got the usual rusty wings...Hoping that will be resolved in the next couple of months.

       






      Next, a proper old Saab. One of the very last 8 valve cars apparently, and all the better for it. I've driven two 16v autos and they were horrible - the auto box works sooooo much better with the torque curve of the 8 valve engine. Just wish it had an overdrive for motorway cruising...









      Next up a *real* Skoda...back when they put the engine where it belongs, right out the back. In the best possible colour of course...eye-searingly bright orange.







      Seat covers have been added since that photo was taken as it suffers from the usual rotting seat cloth problem that affects virtually all Estelles.

      Then we have possibly the world's scruffiest Sinclair C5...



      Realised when looking for this that I really need to get some more photos of the thing...I use it often enough after all! We have a dog who's half husky, so this is a really good way of getting him some exercise.

      Finally - again, I really need to take more photos of - we have the little Pug 107.



      Included for the sake of variety even if it's a bit mainstream! First (and probably to be the only) new car I've bought, and has been a cracking little motor and has asked for very little in return for putting up with nearly three years of Oxford-Milton Keynes commuter traffic, before finally escaping that fate when my housemate moved to a new job. Now it doesn't do many miles and is my default car for "when I've managed to break everything else."

      I'll fill in some more details tomorrow - I warn you though that I do tend to ramble...

      Woke up this morning, had a little time before I had to leave the house for work, had a quick look at what’s new for sale on Retro Rides and saw an ad for a W124 200E manual, located 15 miles from home. I had no intention of buying a car today but I had to have it! I called the seller and arranged a viewing.
       
      Faults:
       
      2 x rusty front wings (TADTS)
      1 x rusty rear arch
      Needs a polish
      Tracking is out because new track rod end was fitted for MoT
      Engine has oil leak/s
       
      Good points:
       
      It’s a W124 200E!
      5 speed manual transmission
      New clutch
      Brand new MoT
      Superb MoT history
      4 x as new Continental tyres
      Last owner for 15 years, her husband before that for 4 years
      Very tidy MB-Tex interior
      Drives well
      All electrics work
       
      The dealer kindly delivered the car to my house but I managed a pez station shot on route:

      In-situ similar repair for rear arch
      Clean and polish

      A Range Rover P38, which is turning out to be really rather good.
       
      And to mix things up even more I'm off on a collection caper today. Had first refusal on it and was expecting it to come around in a year, but things soon changed and no way was I going to pass up on it. It may well render the second Xantia redundant as I've got a really good feeling about this motor.
       
      In the meantime here are some snaps of the Range Rover. As usual it was a car I said I would probably never buy due to their reliability*. I have said the same of Jag XJR, XJS, XK8 and I have had all of those now. Basically the moment I declare buying a particular car is impractical or improbable, I end up buying one.
       
      Things to note on the P38. It's a nice colour with tidy body. The EAS has been removed. It runs and drives lovely and it doesn't have enough electrical problems to hinder progress. The main one is the driver's side window not working, but that should be fixable. I've tried changing the outstation, that didn't fix it. Might be wiring under the seat. Other than that I bought it and took it for an MOT the very next day, and it passed. Since then it had what seemed like a battery drain, but since unplugging the RF thingy for the remote locking and putting on a proper lead-acid battery, which the car can actually charge, unlike the modern lead-calcium batteries, it has been perfect. I will treat it to a full service soon.
