The fact you could buy a Dolomite in 1981 is laughable when you look at what else was for sale then, it was still essentially a 1960s car. I'm not knocking them, I own a 1300TC, but by 1981 they were way out of date. I think there was a planned model to replace the Dolomite with (& possibly the Marina too) ion the mid 1970s, but BL's woes meant it didn't go into production. The current Galaxy and S-Max date back to 2008/9 ish and are a Ford only design. The previous model was a partnership with Volkswagen and also available as a Seat. TM-1 was the joint Triumph-Morris project to replace the Dolomite and Marina but I can't remember whether it came before or after SD2. There was the Michelotti restyled Dolomite too and I'm sure AROnline has chapter and verse on all of these. Come to think of it, the Marina/Ital is a candidate for this thread: it was intended as a stop-gap and a replacement was being planned even before it was launched, so it was only supposed to last until about 1974 at the latest but ended up soldiering on for another decade. Known as the Zastava Koral or Tempo Managed to be in production from 1980 up to an astonishing 2008!!! Very much the same car bar some plastic moulding... But that’s nothing... how about the Zastava Skala... started off in 1971 Produced all through the 80s almost unchanged And was still there in the corner at the 2008 Belgrade motor show! I was once in one in Singapore when the driver somehow didn't notice the stopped traffic in front and twatted the car ahead at about 10mph. If spares were hard to come by I'm sure an Pan-European engine would slot right in. There's a bloke in Lithuania who always has a few advertised for 1500 euros on car and classic.
